====================INTRODUCTION========================
{============================================================}

**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**

We’re closing in fast on the holiday season, and we hope you’re weathering it well … family coming to town? Heading out on the road? Enjoying some quality down time? Going at it hard? However you’re doing it, we wish you the best.

In this JRS, we have your usual garden variety of Burning Man news, including information about Burning Man art grants, a little more illumination on 2013 ticket sales (Holiday Sale pre-registration ends tomorrow!), an update on the Bay Bridge getting illuminated, and an illuminating discussion of this year’s Art Theme (Cargo Cult … you caught that, right? http://bit.ly/V9pzZs) from the inimitable Caveat Magister. And with that, we may just be out of reasonable illumination references. Ahem.

Onward! Enjoy this edition of the JRS, and please do make the most of the holiday season. As our holiday gift to you, we give you this stunner:

BURNING MAN 2013 TICKETS – HOLIDAY SALE

The Holiday Sale is right around the corner – this Thursday, December 20th, beginning at noon. Pre-registration for the Holiday Sale is required and ends on Wednesday (that’s tomorrow), December 19th at noon PST, so make sure you get in there and register to have access to the sale.

Pre-register here:
http://tickets.burningman.com/registration-holiday2013.html

The Holiday Sale sale offers 3,000 tickets at $650 each, and you may purchase up to 4 tickets per person. These tickets are not eligible to be sold through the Secure Ticket Exchange Program (STEP), but they are transferable — you can sell them on your own if you wish. A *minimum* of 3% of the ticket price will be donated to the nonprofit Burning Man Project (www.burningmanproject.org).

Does that price seem high? We hear you. Thing is, offering tickets at this higher price point allows us to keep the cost of the regular tickets down and offer a robust Low Income Ticket Program. There are folks in our community who can afford to spend this much (and more) on their ticket to Burning Man, allowing us to cover our costs, while supporting economic diversity in our community. Please keep in mind these tickets are priced dramatically higher than the rest.

The 3% donation may seem small to you. However, consider this … 3% of the potential revenue from this sale is $58,000 — and that’s the *minimum* cash we’ll be donating. That’s a sizable chunk of change that can have a real impact on a fledgling non-profit such as the Burning Man Project. If the sale is 100% successful and we satisfy the budget requirements for event production, we will be able to commit to a potentially larger amount. We are aiming to accomplish several interdependent goals with this sale that aim to support the long term survival of the event and the culture. The people who are able to purchase tickets at this level are helping get the new organization off the ground, to assist Burning Man culture affect the world ‘outside the trash fence’ for the better.

So what does the Burning Man Project do? Since gaining its nonprofit status six months ago, this new nonprofit has been working to bring large Burning Man-style art to small towns in Nevada, cultivate a partnership with the Downtown Project in Las Vegas, and support the Regional Network – which is currently active in 46 countries. More recently, the Project has been working with Burners Without Borders in New Jersey to help folks affected by Storm Sandy rebuild their lives. Black Rock City, LLC makes contributions, including proceeds from fundraising events and other forms of support, throughout the year to the Burning Man Project to support these and other endeavors.

Looking for more ticket info? We will be announcing details and dates for the Low Income Ticket Program, STEP and access to the bulk of tickets to Burning Man 2013 on January 4, 2013. So … stay tuned.

As always, you can find find full ticket information on http://tickets.burningman.com, and answers to your questions in our Ticketing FAQ (http://tickets2.burningman.com/faq.php) and spiffy new online ticketing forum (http://ticketsupport.burningman.com/home).

BURNING MAN 2013 ART GRANTS

Every year Burning Man issues a small number of grants for the purpose of partially funding specific art projects. We look for work that stands on its own as physical, sculptural installation, independent of performances or activities, although these may accompany the installation. To learn more about the application process, visit:

http://www.burningman.com/installations/art_grants.html

To learn more about the art grant opportunities in the 2013 Man Pavilion, see:

BLACK ROCK CITY 2012 POPULATION UPDATE

When the peak population for Black Rock City 2012 was announced at noon on Friday of the event, the preliminary tally was 52,385, which seemed a bit low. We suspected there were more people in Black Rock City at its peak (which was actually Friday at 6am this year, by the way). So after the event, we went back and conducted a full and comprehensive audit …

After doing some pretty significant accounting and recounting, we determined that the actual peak population at the 2012 event was in fact 56,149. (Now, that’s not everybody who went to Burning Man, it’s just the peak population … a lot of people came late and/or left early this year, having planned ahead to avoid high-traffic ingress and egress times — did you notice the shorter wait times? Right.)

CARGO CULT IS A DARING — AND DANGEROUS — THEME

Caveat Magister (rather exhaustively, we must say) explores the dynamics of this year’s Art Theme in his (what can only be called) seminal blog post: “Cargo Cult is a daring – and dangerous – theme. Get it right.”

This guy is one of our *volunteer coordinators*, in case anybody thinks we’re all a bunch of crazy hippies running around in the desert.

THE OLD BURNING MAN HEADQUARTERS

Thanks to Scott Beale for posting these great pictures back in 2005, and to Ladybee for digging them up for us. We loved the old BMHQ, which was located on 3rd Street at 16th in San Francisco, and was ultimately demolished to make way for the new UCSF Women and Children’s Medical Center that stands there now. It’s nice to take a trip down memory lane … we miss that office!

“ODE TO BLACK ROCK CITY”

“Ode to Black Rock City” Perfectly Captures the Spirit of Burning Man (this one made us cry).

This video comes to us from Denmark. The video’s creation was led by filmmaker Anders Christian Rasmussen and is a synopsis of a longer piece which aired in full on the Danish public television station, TV2 Nord (which is to say, we can probably expect to see more Danes on playa next year). Wonderful work, Anders and crew!

FUTURE WOW! TEAM SEEKING FOOTAGE

Divine writes:

“The Future Wow! Team collected a large amount of footage during Burning Man 2012, but there are still some scenes that we need more footage of to complete the documentary.

The Future Wow! Documentary is meant to capture Burning Man 2012 and Sacred Spaces from an intellectual and spiritual level by interviewing key players and filming multiple experiences and events.

Areas in which we are seeking more footage and/or photographs include:
•    Build week
•    Strike week
•    Groups dancing
•    Sacred Spaces Village Dining
•    Classes, workshops, or other activities
•    Musicians and/or DJs
•    Any nighttime footage
•    Man Burning
•    Temple Burning
•    Good audio of wind

Any footage or photography submitted and selected to help finish the documentary would be fully credited.  Please contact Devin at [email protected] for questions or concerns.

Thank you!

DO YOU HAVE PICTURES OF THE SEA TURTLE?

There was a giant sea turtle sculpture that was part of the Northern California CORE (Circle of Regional Effigies) project. It was … um … absconded with mid-event before it could be burned with the other CORE projects, and then it mysteriously appeared in the Temple, where it was ultimately burned on Sunday night.

Do you happen to have pictures of it anywhere in the course of its … adventure? Baker would love to have them. Email him at [email protected] and you’ll make his day.

THE BAY LIGHTS PROJECT BY LEO VILLAREAL

Did you hear that Leo Villareal’s ambitious Bay Lights project was (wait for it …) green lighted? Har. Well it was, and we’re all very excited to see it. The Bay Lights will be the world’s largest light installation with 25,000 white LED’s. Leo was inspired to create his digital light art by….Burning Man! Back in the mid-90’s he became disoriented on the playa and resolved to create a light sculpture as a reference point. The rest is history.

Here’s more info on the Burning Blog: http://bit.ly/R2HfJQ

And, if you’d like to help with the final stretch of fundraising, the Bay Lights has just launched a fun new grassroots fundraising campaign, The Gift of Light:  http://gift.thebaylights.org/home.

You can buy one of Leo Villareal’s 25,000 white LED’s and keep or gift it, or memorialize it in someone’s name. Check out the interface — you’ll see the four bridge towers and all the lights on each cable — you can select your light and add your name, photo and a message which can be seen when you mouse over the light — so you can see who else is in the support community. There are three price levels, starting at $50. These make great holiday gifts.

To receive bi-weekly updates and to be listed on the Community page, go to www.thebaylights.org and click on Community. We’ll list your website as well.

WOOD IS MOOP. ALL OF IT. YES, ALL OF IT.

Yes, even sawdust. Even wood chips. Remember, don’t let it hit the ground! Wood debris is the #1 most common Matter Out Of Place (MOOP).

It’s ideal to have all of your project cutting and constructing done before you get to the playa, but we know that sometimes it’s unavoidable, and you have to make a few cuts (or a lot of them) once you’re on site in the desert.

Even the sawdust or wood chips sifted out in the MOOP sweeps that happen after the event, counts toward our review by the BLM. Therefore, don’t let it hit the ground!

Cut your wood on a tarp, out of the wind (I know, right?) in a sheltered spot. Pack up the tarp immmediately, and either dump the chips into a burn barrel, your burnables yard waste bag (you bring those, right?) or into your take home trash. Voila! Your project is finished, and you haven’t MOOped up a storm!

BURNING MAN 2013 TICKETS: THE HOLIDAY SALE

Here’s the deal: we don’t know yet what Black Rock City’s allowable peak population for 2013 will be. Some of the details of agreements that impact that number have not yet been finalized, which means we don’t have enough data to determine precisely how many tickets will be sold and at what price. We are working hard to get our permits and agreements in place, and will be announcing the full ticket plan on Friday January 4, 2013. That said …

We know you’re super curious about some big questions, and we’d like to put your mind at ease about a few things right now: tickets will be sold first-come first-served — that’s right, no lottery. Secondly, purchasing tickets will require pre-registration so that we can weed out known scalpers beforehand. We’ll offer a robust Low Income Ticket Program, as we have in the past, and we’re bringing back the Secure Ticket Exchange Program (STEP) to facilitate the safe, hassle-free exchange of tickets between people in the aftermarket.

So there are the big ones for you. We’ll have the rest — all the details — on January 4th. And with that, here’s information about the Holiday Sale …

Burning Man Tickets Holiday Sale:

Early-birds can participate in our Holiday Sale, which allows folks to buy tickets in time for holiday gifting. PLEASE NOTE: Holiday Sale tickets are priced dramatically higher than our regular tickets will be and Black Rock City, LLC will donate 3% of the price of each ticket sold during this early Holiday Sale to the Burning Man Project, a new nonprofit dedicated to spreading Burning Man culture around the world. (In addition, Black Rock City, LLC makes other substantial contributions throughout the year to support the Burning Man Project, including contributing the proceeds from fundraising events and many other forms of support.)

So … here are the details:

– 3000 tickets will be offered at $650 each for the Holiday Sale.
– In order to participate in this sale, you must pre-register at:
http://tickets.burningman.com/registration-holiday2013.html
– Registration is open NOW and will close at noon PST on Wednesday December 19th.
– Those pre-registered will be able to participate in the first-come first-served sale on Thursday December 20th, starting at noon PST.
– You may purchase a maximum of 4 tickets per person.
– These tickets are not eligible for STEP, but are transferable (you are welcome to resell them on your own, if you wish).
– The only payment types accepted are Mastercard or Visa credit cards, or debit cards with either the Visa or Mastercard symbols. If you don’t have one of these cards, you will need to obtain a one-time use card.
– Physical tickets will be shipped between June 1 and July 15, unless you opt for pick-up at Will Call in Black Rock City.

(We will not be implementing identity-based ticketing (e.g. name-on-ticket) … for more information, see this blog post from Larry Harvey: http://blog.burningman.com/?p=23887.)

As always, you can find find full ticket information on http://tickets.burningman.com, and answers to your questions in our Ticketing FAQ (http://tickets2.burningman.com/faq.php) and spiffy new online ticketing forum (http://ticketsupport.burningman.com/home).

So, we were traipsing around the internet the other day, as you do, and we saw that the folks over at Burncast dug out and served up this oldie but goodie video, and it got us all wispy and verklemptified and whatnot. Thought you might enjoy it, as the days start to shorten, and the weather grows colder. So here it is … Matt Goodman’s incredible 5-week timelapse of Black Rock City 2011:

http://bit.ly/ZwC7zH

Kinda mind-blowing, ain’t it? OK, onward! This edition of the JRS brings with it plenty of opportunities to PARTICIPATE, including writing Django (if that doesn’t make sense to you, don’t worry), sharing your playa story with the world, helping reunite sad sad Burners with their lost cameras, making your mark on the Black Rock City census, attending a Decompression event in HAWAII, and participating in a gifting workshop … how’s that for variety, right?

Dig in, and we hope that you have plenty to be grateful for when you’re sitting around the Thanksgiving table next week. We know we do … after all, we get to hang out with YOU folks (awwww!). Seriously though, you guys are rad.

The Man burns in 288 days!

PARTICIPATE IN THE BLACK ROCK CITY CENSUS (DECOMPRESSION EDITION)!

Did you fill out the Census while you were at Burning Man? More than 10,000 people did this year (that’s more than one out of every five attendees!). If you’re one of these lucky Burners, you can access the final part of the Burning Man Census at http://census.burningman.com.

We’re calling it the Decompression section, and for the first time in Census history, you will be able to tell us about your Burning Man experience!

For this project to work, we need your help. Please:
1) Fill out the Decompression survey at http://census.burningman.com
2) Tell your fellow Burners about the project and send them the address.

Heads up: to fill out the Decompression section of the Census, you must be one of those who completed the Census at Burning Man (the long paper form with a pink access card in the back).

THE CENSUS CLOSES THE FIRST WEEK OF DECEMBER!

The Census began in 2002, and has grown into a living collaboration between nerdy Burner scientists, Burning Man Headquarters (BMHQ), and Black Rock Citizens. Since its inception, Census data has been used by BMHQ and social scientists to demonstrate that the people of Black Rock City are upstanding global citizens. We post summaries of each Burn’s Census data online in the AfterBurn section of the burningman.com site.

Confidentiality has always been strictly maintained. The Decompression section of the census was written by our Burning Nerd collaborators and their questions were designed to answer their particular research questions. Your participation will help them to write more and better articles about people who go to Burning Man and their experiences. Going forward, we hope the Census data will become more interactive, allowing Black Rock Citizens an opportunity to explore the data sets while maintaining the confidentiality of the respondents. We are just beginning to envision how this might work. If you have ideas, please share them! If you’d like to be part of the team, please join us! We always need more nerds. Email us: [email protected].”

TALES FROM THE PLAYA – RESURRECTED!

Back in the day, the Tales From the Playa section of the Burning Man website played host to years’ worth of participant’s first-hand playa stories. It made for a veritable trove of wonderful nuggets, slices, crumbs and niggly bits of Burning Man culture. Well, it went dormant for a few years there, but we’re happy to say that IT’S BEEN REVIVED!

We’ve migrated all the stories onto the Burning Blog (post-dating them to their original submission dates), and have caught up on posting our backlog of stories that you fine (and very patient) folks have been submitting. We’re VERY excited about this, as this is an important part of Burning Man’s historical archive. And with that, we give you Tales From the Playa:

http://blog.burningman.com/category/tales-from-the-playa/

YOU are welcome to submit your playa story (and photos, if you wish) for consideration to [email protected]. We encourage well-written submissions relating to your participation at the event. Please sample the diverse Tales already posted. We are interested in your unique experiences, episodes, or reflections. It is not necessary to provide general descriptions or advice about the event. We may select and edit any submission. (We do not post everything and will not post descriptions of illegal acts or false or inaccurate information.) Making your submission as grammatically and stylistically precise as possible will enhance the likelihood that your exact expression will be posted as you intended.  We look forward to reading your submissions, so get writing!

IF IT’S NOT FROM YOUR BODY, DON’T PUT IT IN THE POTTY … BUT WHY?

Why do we say, ‘If it’s not from your body, don’t put it in the potty’? And how come we’re so…ahem…anal… about the toilet paper used?

Do you know how the porta-potty suckers process our waste? They essentially spray it through a big screen (gross, we know. AND necessary). Anything more than single-ply TP gets stuck on the screen, and then, someone who works tirelessly doing this in 100-degree heat all day, a *REAL HUMAN*, has to pick out the thing that’s stopping the flow through the screen, *BY HAND*. Imagine for a moment, that that is YOU.

Now do you want to carry a ziplock bag with you to carry your trash back to camp? We thought you might. Have mercy on the troops of soldiers doing the work you don’t want to think about doing. Oh, and if they decide they don’t want to work with us anymore, guess what? Big problem for Burning Man. 🙁

Remember … if it goes through your body, it can go in the potty. Want your watermelon rind in there? Eat it first. Same goes for tampons.

Greetings and welcome to this edition of the JRS, wherein we answer the hot question dancing on the tip of your tongues … WHAT IS THE 2013 ART THEME? We got that for you riiiight down there. We think you’ll like it. We certainly do.

As for the other question — tickets — we don’t have the details yet (soon, we promise), BUT Caveat Magister recently wrote a fascinating post for the Burning Blog that ponders some interesting questions regarding Burning Man and tickets.  Check it out in the ROUND UP OF BURNING MAN WRITINGS section.

OK then … as usual, we’ve got a wide variety of offerings for you, including information about Burners Without Borders activities in response to Hurricane Sandy (get involved!), an opportunity to work for Burning Man (yes, mom, it’s actually job), George Post’s fantastic book featuring 21 years of Burning Man photography (holy bejeezus!), and an excellent time-lapse video from this year’s event that we’re sure you’ll enjoy.

So with that, let us say that we hope your holiday calendar is filling up nicely with friends, family and frivolity.

The Man burns in 274 days!

BURNERS WITHOUT BORDERS AND HURRICANE SANDY

The folks coordinating the Burners Without Borders response to Hurricane Sandy write:

“Destroying a neighborhood, in order to rebuild it: Burners Without Borders and Hurricane Sandy … what’s happening, and how you can help (or, how to turn $30,000 into $1.6 million in a month).

We’ve all heard about Hurricane Sandy’s devastating impact, and Burners all over the country have been responding in all kinds of ways, many with the Occupy Sandy efforts.

For some Sandy brought back memories of Hurricane Katrina, which inspired the creation of BWB. Within days of Sandy, Richard Scott, a founding member of BWB and former head of the Art Support Services Team of the DPW, was on his way to the Jersey Shore to assess where we could help the most.

That place is Union Beach, a small, year round working community absolutely devastated by Hurricane Sandy. (See some of the devastation here http://bit.ly/QPOpCq ) There are over 160 houses that need to be demolished, expensive work that would bankrupt the town. Union Beach asked if BWB could help–and who better to knock a city down so that it can get back up, but Burners? In true playa-synchronicity style, Richard connected with Michael Craddock, a local Burner who had volunteered with BWB/Pisco sin Fronteras doing earthquake relief in Chile, and Michael’s dad owned heavy machinery he was willing to donate to do the heavy lifting of recovery work. Since then, volunteers Jovia Nierenberg & Brenda Zimmerman have shown up to organize the logistics of a long term relief operation.

If BWB-Sandy can demolish all these houses, it will be doing free work worth over $1.6 million, between now and the end of the year. After that, we may go to other communities–if we can, and this is where you come in. We now have the people, and the tools, and the place — the only thing we need now is food and fuel for this growing team. We need to raise $30,000 to fund this all-volunteer, no-cost-to-homeowners gift program.

Support is pouring in — we’ve already received $12,000 (including one anonymous $10,000 donation!), and some amazing fundraisers are happening:
DelRey Bach, FL, December 1st,  Advance screening of “Burning Man and the meaning of life,” portion of proceeds to BWB-Sandy www.jpifproductions.com,
San Francisco, December 7th at Book Club, organized by Partners & SUTRO, details here: http://paperless.ly/UZUj1b, rsvp to [email protected]

Want to organize a benefit? Let us know how we can help!

BWB-Sandy is also networking with area groups in beach and community space clean ups, including supporting Ocean Action Network on a statewide event on December 8th.

THE GAYBORHOOD WANTS YOU!

Toaster writes:

“Greetings all you lovely burners, burgins and artistic antagonistos! This is Toaster, and I would like you to know and perhaps join us in participation within our little community and how we are participating in the rest of the community as well.

THE GAYBORHOOD: As you may know this existed long before there was any web site and this whole project but it has been a source of dialog in the last year. This year the Gayborhood was its strongest. NOT because we are queerer but we are grateful to a wonderous placement team.

While we cater to the LGBTQ++ not all of our members are specifically represented under that acronym. I talked to a vocal member of our community recently (the Burning Man community) and asked him if he would work with me on Queer Burners and his immediate reaction was ‘I’m not gay’. It’s not at all about that.

If NOTHING ELSE TAKE AWAY THIS:
* the web site and its content is just a platform for lgbtq++ to connect with each other and anyone else who wants to enjoy our vibe, too; there is no point where there is a pass/fail for who or… hmmm you make nookie with
* we are all powerfully committed to the 10 principles and a majority of us carry this in our daily lives – too
* we actively engage our community and the community at large with SUPREME Radical Inclusion

The Gayborhood, Gayburbs, Gayburbia or even the Gay Ghetto: whatever you call it are nothing more than pockets where people of all corners have camped or visited. Many of us find safety in coallessing into one giant village like any other out there every year. We are planning on a campout sometime soon in early 2013 and joining 1 or 2 Regional Events as ‘The Village Q’. For more information please check out any of the following links:

A Final Footnote
The 10 Principles +1 (being Grateful) is always with us and everything we do as camps, individuals, villages and as participants in anything we do. I do not speak for anyone else but me; so my posts on the site have my name on them. We have great great people who I get to do some cool stuff with all over the burner community.

I can’t help but point out just a couple of the most outstanding examples of Community and Gifting that have come out of camps/groups who reside in the community:

* Comfort & Joy and their highly successful and evolved canned food drive annually for the Native Americans whose land is in the Black Rock Desert <=http://playajoy.org/

* Out of Los Angeles is ‘Payasos’ which is Spanish for Clown where members of Dickstracted Camp do so many fund raisers for their community. It started off for kids with clef pallets but has grown in many directions!  https://www.facebook.com/pages/Payasos/102950689767779?ref=ts&fref=ts<= their Facebook”

DISTRIKT WANTS YOUR ART!

The DISTRIKT folks write:

“From our inception over a decade ago, our goal has been to provide a great daytime vibe of music, dancing, and alternative arts at Burning Man. We live and breathe our ideals year around, and look forward to giving back to the community that has inspired and bonded us together. So, once again this year we are proud to annouce the 2013 DISTRIKT Art Grant!

We will provide up to $5000 for one or more art installations to be showcased at DISTRIKT during Burning Man 2013. The art should blend and interact with DISTRIKT (i.e.- extremely fragile nighttime-oriented installations won’t make sense at a crowded and energetic camp operating during the day.) Other than that, the sky’s the limit!

As with grants from BRAF or Burning Man itself, this is not a commission — the art is yours to keep. We simply provide funding and a venue within which to showcase your creation. Though we’d love to have you, camping with or becoming a member of DISTRIKT isn’t a requirement.  If you’re interested and feel your installation would be a good fit at DISTRIKT, please follow the following instructions.

Timeline/Process:
Email Letter of Inquiry (LOI) to [email protected] no later than December 31st 2012.
The LOI should include the following information
-Name of artist or collective
-Name phone number, email address, and mailing address of contact person
-Name of project or program
-Amount requested up to $5000
-Brief description of project, and how it fits the ethos of DISTRIKT (400 words or less)
-Attachment or link to images or conceptual drawings

Invitations for proposals, along with further instructions, will be extended no later than January 15th, 2013. Proposals are accepted by invitation only, and are due February 15th, 2013. Selected grantees are notified March 1st, 2013. Initial funding released to new grantees by March 15th, 2013. Finally, regardless of how Burning Man decides to conduct ticket sales this year, please note that we can work with the winner(s) to procure tickets if necessary.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email us at [email protected] and we will do our best to respond quickly.  Now bring it on!!

With love,
Your DISTRIKT Governors”

A GIVING TREE – BENEFIT IN SUPPORT OF BURNERS WITHOUT BORDERS – SF, CA – DEC 7

We don’t normally post local fundraising events (because many of you don’t care, if you’re not in the immediate vicinity, right?), but this one has a great message attached to it that’s worth bringing to your attention. So this is a special case … Ariel Sutro (Bay Area Administrator for the 2011 Trojan Horse & Co-Founder of Vertical Camp) writes to tell us of her company’s holiday fundraising party to support Burners Without Borders:

“Partners & Sutro was forged out of relationships and experiences at Burning Man. After building Vertical Camp for 5 years, and then the Horse four of us got together and decided to make our Burning community our ‘real life’. A year ago we started a business together – and our office and event space, Book Club, has become a vibrant community space we can share for events like this. The holidays are a good time to ask ourselves what we can do for others. Burners Without Borders is particularly special – because you know the donated dollars go directly to work. The ‘boots on the ground’ Burner gift force is inspiring to all – we are happy to support their efforts, and motivate our friends and business partners to do so as well.

We’re creating ‘A Giving Tree’ to support the current cleanup in NJ. Guests will decorate the tree with their cash and checks, and ornaments they’ll make from housing scraps BWB is sending out from NJ. Many in our community are offering to help – we’ve already raised $500 from people who can’t make the event and St. George Artisan Distillery is sending over 3 cases of their spirits.

Saturday morning our $10,000 donation will hit NJ and the crews will immediately put it to work.

5MPH? DAMN, THAT’S SLOW!

There must be a method to our madness, right? We don’t just think that driving slower than your car naturally idles is fun, promise. The reasons for the super-low speed limit (5mph) are many, but we can group ’em into two buckets: enjoyment and safety.

Enjoyment! Let’s start here. If everyone driving past your camp is going 5mph, they’re not kicking up dust (much, anyway) and crop-dusting your camp. They’re going slow enough to look you in the eye. Burning Man has begun … slow down … take the time to soak it in and enjoy your surroundings.

Safety! Let’s face it, BRC can seem like somebody kicked an anthill — it’s madness out there. Driving at 5mph, you’re more likely to see the blitzkrieg of pedestrians, bikers, artworks and whatever-the-hell-THAT-was’s in your path — especially at night. Seriously, you don’t want to be the guy who ran that dude over, cuz that would completely suck.

Patience is a virtue, dusty friends. Let’s not trash the playa surface, choke out our neighbors, nor miss the opportunity to connect. Slow it down. You’ll get there, promise.

Los Angeles, December 15th, BurnLA, The Cruz Coalition & The LA League of Arts are joining forces for a great cause to present the 1st Annual White Blissmass Charity Ball: http://www.facebook.com/events/168101543332273/
Want to organize a benefit? Let us know how we can help!

BWB-Sandy is also networking with area groups in beach and community space clean ups, including supporting Ocean Action Network on a statewide event on December 8th.

Greetings friends! We hope this finds you well, and enjoying yourselves as the year drifts into Fall. And we particularly hope that our friends along the eastern seaboard of the US are weathering Hurricane Sandy safely … sure sounds like a whopper.

But tell ya what, when disaster strikes, ain’t no place we’d rather be than with other self-reliant Burners who know how to gift their skills to those in need, cuz yeah, that’s how we roll. Stay safe out there, folks!

We’re excited to tell you that we passed the BLM inspection last week with flying colors, and it’s all thanks to YOU and your efforts to Leave No Trace … that AND the heroic efforts of the Playa Restoration crew that has now returned (albeit a bit dusty, bleary-eyed and somewhat disoriented) from their long days in the desert sun.

And just in time too, because guess what? It has already started to snow in Gerlach. Brrrrrr. We’re hoping for a big winter that will tamp down the playa surface for next year … but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

We’ve got a nice little JRS for you this time around, featuring some beautiful photography, videography, stories — AND A BRAND NEW SECTION called “Black Rock City Civics”, which will feature one tidbit per JRS about being an upstanding citizen of Black Rock City (How do community bikes work? What’s good generator etiquette? What are the limits of radical self-expression? Is wood MOOP? You get the idea). It promises to be illuminating for both first-timers and vets alike.

The Man burns in 305 days!

BURNING MAN PASSES BLM INSPECTION – 2013 IS ON!

We’re excited to report (and you’re likely excited to hear) that Burning Man has passed the BLM inspection of Black Rock City’s footprint on the Black Rock Desert. This means that Burning Man 2013 will happen, which is rad, of course.

Big thanks to all of YOU who did your part to Leave No Trace, and to the hard-working Playa Restoration crew (the largest ever) to tackle the task at hand: removing every last trace of Black Rock City.

WELL DONE EVERYBODY! Here’s the full story, as told by The Hun:

HELP REUNITE LOST CAMERAS WITH THEIR OWNERS

Turns out this has become a super fun annual tradition. Here’s Burning Man staffer Lee Anna Mariglia to tell you about it (including a highly-apropos video addendum):

“A small selection of images from the cameras turned into Playa Info’s Lost and Found at this year’s event have been uploaded to Flickr. Designed to help reunited cameras with their rightful owner, this project was first begun in 2010 with great success. We ask you and your friends to peruse these images and, if you recognize any friendly faces, please let those friendly face owners know that their camera has been found.

Detailed instructions for how one would reunite with their camera are found below each image.

To get started, check out http://www.flickr.com/photos/burning_man_lost_and_found/

Happy hunting,
Lee Anna

WHAT’S UP WITH TICKETS FOR BURNING MAN 2013?

We know you’re wondering. Even as last year’s tickets were just going on sale, we began reviewing what worked, what didn’t, and ways we could improve the system for future years. We are listening to your feedback, collecting input from many voices and experts in the community, and are deep in the process of working out the plan for this year. These are not decisions we take lightly and there are many factors to consider, so please be patient as we determine the ticketing plan for 2013.

All announcements related to 2013 tickets will be included in future editions of the Jackrabbit, with full information posted on the web site … so stay tuned!

TWO VIDEOS FROM COOL ART INSTALLATIONS

Michael Emery sent us in this video of his piece “Nelumbo Nucifera” from Burning Man 2011. We’ll admit we didn’t get to see it at night, which now that we’re seeing this footage, we realize that was REALLY DUMB. Because it was cool. See:

http://vimeo.com/45848840

Second up, we have The Starlight Project from Burning Man 2012, by Erich Remash, Jeremy Berglund, Don Peterson and Chad Ingle. It’s a beautiful set of laser-cut icosahedrons (we’re admittedly a bit foggy on our advanced geometry, so we’re trusting the artists here) laid out in the formation of the constellation Orion. Which is cool.

See? Cool.

FULL CIRCLE: GEORGE POST’S BURNING MAN BOOK EVENT – SF – NOVEMBER 13

Our friend George Post writes to tell us of this event, supporting his new (and excellent, we must say) Burning Man photography book.

“ASMP NorCal presents a Burning Man book event on November 13th with George Post at Fort Mason in San Francisco.

Long-time playa photographer George Post first met the Burning Man at Fort Mason when the 1991 Man was erected and displayed on a floating barge tied between the piers on the Summer Solstice of that year. Following the ceremonial “Raising of the Man” and the generator-powered illumination of his neon nervous system, a film of the first (1990) Black Rock Desert burn was shown in the Cowell Theatre. Impressed by the photographic possibilities, George journeyed to the 1991 event and has continued to attend every year since.

Now the Northern California Chapter of the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) presents a Fort Mason evening with George and his new book, “Dancing with the Playa Messiah,” in the Southside Theatre in Building D on November 13th. Social hour with light refreshments begins at 6pm, program to follow from 7-9pm. General Admission is $10 (free to ASMP General Members, $5 for ASMP Associate and Student Members).

George’s self-published book is a 216-page 12×12″ hardback with nearly 1000 color photographs from 21 consecutive years of documenting Burning Man. George will present a slideshow of images from his book and talk about the technical challenges of documenting Burning Man in a harsh, dusty desert environment; the changes brought about by the exponential growth of the event; and the transition from film photography to digital.

Autographed copies of the book will be available for purchase after the program.

Visit http://asmpnorcal.org/drupal/node/1456 for full details and ticket pre-sales. The Southside Theatre is a small 160-seat venue, so advance ticket purchase is recommended.

See more about George’s book at http://playa-messiah.com and https://www.facebook.com/PlayaMessiahPictureBook ”

FLAME EFFECTS FOR THE ARTIST – SEATTLE, WA – DECEMBER 1-2

DaveX, who manages all the fire safety on playa (bless his heart), writes:

“Our friends at the Hazard Factory and Ignition Northwest are our hosts as the next Flame Effects for the Artists class comes to Seattle Washington.

Attention all artists who wish to incorporate fire aspects into their art! This class is for you …

The workshop will be teaching basic practices and principles for incorporating fuel based flame effects into your work. This class is great for the beginning fire artist and always has something new for the ‘expert’. Each one of these classes has drawn participants who have had all levels of experience. This has made for some great questions and projects that have been both fun and challenging.

This class will be fun for the artist who is thinking of incorporating a small flame element into their work, as well as the more experienced fire artist wanting to take their work to the next level.

The cost of this 2-Day class will be $150. Both days’ classes will be from 10am – 5pm. Printed materials and a crappy but filling lunch of whatever cheap food we can get will be provided each day.

Joining Dave X in leading this class will be Eric Smith, Chief Inspector for the State of Nevada Board for the Regulation of LP Gas. We will also have displays and demonstrations of fire art from several local fire artists!

Check out some pics of past classes:

BRAND-BE-GONE! COVER YOUR LOGOS

One of Burning Man’s 10 Principles is “Decommodification”, by which our community seeks to create social environments that are unmediated by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or advertising. Black Rock City is the one place in the world where you don’t have to be inundated by advertising. In this spirit, participants have long been encouraged to cover, augment or mutate (usually to humorous effect) logos on their rental vehicles, et al. This practice seems to have languished in recent years, but we hope to see its revival in 2013 and beyond. Go forth and Decommodify!

====================INTRODUCTION========================
{============================================================}

**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**

Wow, after one of the most challenging years in Burning Man’s history, our community truly stepped up to make Burning Man 2012 one of the best events ever. Despite all of the challenges, dust, smoke, rain, lightning and more, it all went off without a hitch!

There were more incredible art installations, mutant vehicles and theme camps than ever, and the (peak) population of 52,300 clearly cranked their dials up to 11 to manifest one magical Burn week! A host of first-timers joined in, many of whom quickly became productive contributors to our community. We can’t wait to see what they do next year!

We’re especially pleased to report that traffic in and out of the city (one of our biggest concerns) was a TOTAL NON-ISSUE. Wait times getting into BRC were lower than we’ve seen in YEARS (like 3 hours at the peak), and Exodus waits were nearly non-existent — the delays experienced by most were due to terrible road conditions rather than the volume of Burners coming or going. And we owe it all to YOU for planning ahead, and to some exceptional planning and on-site work by the Gate crew (thank you Gate!).

Despite worries of a dustpocalypse, Mother Nature blessed us with relatively light winds and moderate temperatures throughout the week, but she let us know who’s boss with a bit of rain and lightning (eep!) on Thursday, and a solid windstorm on Friday. She saw fit to let us Burn in peace for Saturday’s (epic) Man burn, and Sunday’s (truly spectacular) Temple burn.

Now that you’ve returned to your (other) home, we’ve got a full Burning Man 2012 wrap-up to warm your cockles, including media coverage, oodles of photo galleries, post-playa tips, opportunities for getting us your feedback and more. Also included are plenty of ways to keep the fires burning and stay connected to Burning Man and the Burner way of life throughout the year — join us!

So read on, and as you do, please think of the hardy members of the Department of Public Works, who will be out there on the Black Rock Desert until October, working to restore it to its pristine condition — so we can do it all again next year.

Big thanks to every last one of you for making Burning Man 2012 a spectacular success!

The Man burns (again) in 358 days!

FEEDBACK LOOP: TELL US WHAT YOU THINK!

Burning Man 2012 is in the bag! Now, we want your feedback about your Burning Man experience. Your thoughts, concerns, questions, and reflections will factor into our planning for 2013!

The staff reads every word that gets sent in, and your thoughtful input becomes a part of our annual staff debrief process. While we’re always open to your feedback, we’ll be closing up the formal Feedback Loop process on November 1 to head into our meetings, so please act fast. Stand up and be heard! Email [email protected] with your thoughts.

Note: while we do respond to some feedback emails with personal responses, we aren’t able to respond to every message personally. Those subjects that generate a lot of public comment are addressed in the Q&A section of the annual Afterburn Report.

POST-PLAYA TIPS

We’ve assembled a collection of helpful post-playa tips to help you clean your stuff, your car, yourself, even your brain. We’ve even got some tips about getting yourself ready for next year. Yep, this is us, loving you.

http://www.burningman.com/preparation/event_survival/postplaya.html

Also, here’s a nice article we came across about how to cope with post-playa depression (which is a very real thing and not uncommon, folks) – maybe it’s up your alley: http://bit.ly/OZXvYF

And a pretty funny (because it’s true) one, entitled “Do not divorce your parakeet yet”:

http://bit.ly/OZXCU4

Finally, one great cure for post-playa blues is to connect with other Burners. Here’s how:

LAW ENFORCEMENT FEEDBACK

Did you have or witness an encounter with law enforcement on the playa? Whether it was positive or negative, we want to know about it. We use this information to work year round with law enforcement officers to improve our relations, improve their interactions with our community, and to ensure your constitutional and civil rights are being protected while in Black Rock City. And we can’t be successful in that effort if we don’t have your stories.

So please, take a moment to download, fill out and mail us a Law Enforcement Feedback Form (PDF), here:

http://www.burningman.com/on_the_playa/le_feedback.html

**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**

LAWYERS FOR BURNERS

If you got arrested or received a citation on playa, don’t feel like you’re in it alone. A grassroots, volunteer organization called Lawyers For Burners may be able to help you out with finding a lawyer and/or legal advice. Visit their website for more information:

http://www.lawyersforburners.com

Tip: to contact LFB, fill out their Feedback Form (linked from the left hand column), and they’ll be in touch.

**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**

LOST AND FOUND

Did you lose something on playa and want it back? Find something, and want to return it to its rightful owner? Don’t despair – hundreds of happy Burner-and-stuff reunions have been successfully achieved post-event, so check here before you call your beloved possession gone for good:

BADASS BURNING BLOGGERS COVER BURNING MAN

While you were otherwise occupied with preparing for Burning Man, or going neck-deep into the wilds of Black Rock City, our intrepid bloggers were hard at work, capturing the sights, sounds and experiences of Burning Man for your reading pleasure. John Curley and Moze rocked it out to say the least — these guys sure do make us look good, and you’ll really enjoy these chronicles. Check out their work:

WHAT’S THE 2013 ART THEME?

Used to be Larry would publish the Art Theme in January, and only in the last several years started doing it right after the Man burns. But with the advent of the Burning Man Project (www.burningmanproject.org) and an increasingly large workload, it takes a little longer to get it spit-and-polished. This is all to say we can expect to see it this Fall … so stay tuned!

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING ART IN BLACK ROCK CITY!!

Here’s a big thank you to everybody who supported Burning Man projects this year … whether it was a financial contribution, a donation, or volunteering your time and talents, the fruits of your generosity sure did show on playa! We saw more art projects in Black Rock City than ever before (over 375 installations!), including more fire art than ever (93 pieces!), and 550 incredible mutant vehicles.

While it does seem during the thick of the fundraising season that we’re getting inundated by requests for support, the end result is that more people have the opportunity to contribute to these projects, making them truly community-generated creations. So thank you!

Kids on playa?! Yep, absolutely. In fact, Burning Man has been a family affair from the very beginning. When Jerry James and Larry Harvey burned the first Man in 1986, their 5-year old sons Robin and Trey built a Burning Dog alongside their dads.

Burning Man enthusiastically welcomes children of all ages to Black Rock City, and kids 12 and younger don’t require a ticket. BRC’s infrastructure supports the presence of families, and has an excellent record regarding the welfare of children. There have been zero incidents of children suffering serious injuries in the event’s 25-year history.

Are you planning on bringing your kids along to this year’s burn? There are some great resources and programs for Burner families that we want you to know about, including The Survival Guide for Families, Kidsville, Black Rock Scouts and the new FUN Child ID Program run by the Black Rock Rangers.

We’ll start things off with a great Burning Blog post from Judes, a Burner since 1999 and an advocate for playa families. She first brought her son Dexter to BRC when he was 16-months-old, and he now has 8 Burns under his belt! Take a look: http://bit.ly/Pf05fK … in fact, we owe much of the content of this edition of the JRS to Judes’ great work. Huzzah!

The Man burns in 18 days!

PLAYA SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR FAMILIES

Surviving at Black Rock City is difficult enough, and now you want to bring your kids? That’s great! It can certainly be daunting the first time, but children actually thrive in the playa environment. It just takes some extra preparation, planning and diligence.

Judes and the folks from Kidsville have compiled an excellent Survival Guide for Families. Learn more and check it out:

**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**

F.U.N. CHILD IDENTIFICATION PROGRAM

The Family Unification Network (FUN) is a new program this year. Here’s how it works: families register themselves and their children at the Black Rock Ranger HQ in Center Camp (daily from 9am-noon or anytime after 2pm). This is also a great way for children to become familiar with Rangers and the Ranger Station.

The registered child will receive a wristband with a serial number that is unique to them, which will identify the child, parents and camp location. That’s all you have to do! Should your child become separated from you, all he or she has to do is find a Ranger. The wristband serial number will facilitate a speedy reunion.

*** Staff and Volunteers with families are strongly encouraged to register their children in support of this program. ***

**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**

BLACK ROCK SCOUTS

Judes says:

“In 2010 I founded Black Rock Scouts with the goal of inspiring kids to volunteer as they grow up, to take ownership of their community and to become model Burners.

The program is for Burner kids, based on the Ten Principles of Burning Man. The objective is to teach kids what it takes to sustain life at Burning Man, how to embrace their creativity, teach playa survival skills and how to get involved in their BRC community… not just skip through it.

Camps, services and the Black Rock community host playa-cational events, field trips and offer volunteer opportunities for kids. Scouts earn patches, tokens or pins for things learned, survival skills achieved, volunteering, good deeds and connections made. After all, kids are the future of Burning Man.

This year, our new BRS Leader Jay Marlette has scheduled 15 events for kids of all ages. Scouts should visit the BRS Headquarters in Kidsville to see the Schedule of Events and pre-register. Each scout will earn one BRS Patch, Bandanna and Sash while supplies last. Most events are hosted or at least meet at the BRS headquarters.

Here’s the BRS schedule of events: http://bit.ly/PRUxCu

BRS Policies: BRS is not a baby-sitting service. All kids must be a accompanied by an parent or playa-guardian, unless otherwise arranged with the Scout leader of that event. Although transportation is provided for some field trips, parents are responsible for getting themselves and their kids to the events. Parents are responsible for the behavior and safety of their children at all times.”

WELCOME TO KIDSVILLE!

Kidsville is a cooperative village for Burners with kids, which has grown to more than 150 families in recent years. Kidsvillians believe that Burning Man is a unique experience to share as a family.

Kidsville is safe, quiet, centrally located and close to Potties, Center Camp, Medical and the 6:00 Rangers Station. The Village takes up the blocks between 5:00 and 5:30, Dandelion and Edelweiss. The entire village is enclosed with playa fencing and flagpoles, to identify boundaries for kids. Vehicles are not allowed within the borders so it’s a safe place for kids to ride bikes, run and play. For added safety, all kids are tagged with K’ville wristbands to make them easily identifiable.

Link:
http://www.burningman.com/preparation/maps/12_maps/2012_BRC_063012.jpg

A tight-knit community develops overnight; children have plenty of friends to play with and parents bond and share with neighbors. In the K’ville Center Camp is the Mayor’s camp, a fire pit, an Information Kiosk with an event schedule, the Black Rock Scouts HQ, resident Ranger Mickey’s Camp and play equipment like trampolines. During the week, families host dozens of events like Mini Burning Man. We love it when art cars visit and take little peeps and their families for a spin! To schedule a visit, contact Kidsville Mayor Dawn Lapierre, a.k.a. Queen of F’ing Everything via her Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/dawn.lapierre.

While K’ville welcomes all Playa-families to visit, it is NOT A BABYSITTING SERVICE. Children may NOT be dropped off in Kidsville without a parent. Parents are responsible for their children’s safety and behavior at all times, inside and outside of Kidsville.

To camp in Kidsville, each camp must have at least one child under the age 18. All camps must work at least one Kidsville Greeter shift. There are still a few spaces left in Kidsville, but you must pre-register and choose a campsite. Once spaces become full, there is a waiting list. NOTE: If you are NOT pre-registered with a camp location, don’t expect to arrive at Kidsville and find a space.

It’s somehow appropriate that the Burning Man Operations Chief of Emergency Services, Joseph Pred, was sitting in a hospital emergency room editing this year’s edition of the Health and Safety edition. Luckily he wasn’t a patient … and hopefully you won’t be one either while attending Burning Man this year. Read on and be safe!

The Man burns in 21 days!

SENDING AND RECEIVING EMERGENCY MESSAGES: FAQ

Q: Where should I go to check for emergency messages that might be waiting for me?

A: The only place on-playa that serves as a central collection point for emergency messages is Playa Info in Center Camp.

Q: What if friends or family at home need to reach me for an emergency?

A: Unfortunately, given the nature of the event, finding a participant on the playa is usually quite challenging. Cell phones really don’t work, most of you don’t carry satellite phones, and there is limited Internet access. Now add to that the fact that addresses on the playa are inexact even if you *do* know where you’re camping ahead of time, and finding a person’s camp can become very difficult.

Q: How can friends or family send me a message?

A: Emergency messages should be sent via the new emergency contact web form found here: http://911.burningman.com/ . The message will be passed to the Black Rock Rangers who, if they have the extra resources, will attempt to deliver it. We will also make the message available at Playa Info in Center Camp, so if you’re awaiting bad news or anticipating emergency messages, you might plan to check in there each day.

Q: What details should be included in an emergency message?

A: The new emergency contact web form will prompt users for details to help find you. Important details include first and last name as well as any known nickname that you might go by around camp. It should also include the name of your theme camp or other affiliation (volunteer team, etc.), and its location if known, along with your vehicle make/license plate and any other unique features that will help with the search (such as, “camp has a 20 foot inflatable bee,” etc.).

Q: What can prevent me from getting the message?

A: Just a few of the variables that can get in the way: your camp relocates, or nobody’s ever in camp when we come to find you; your camp spot is obscured from view by other camps; the 20 foot inflatable bee deflates due to a leak; there are three camps with 20-foot inflatable bees, and none of the neighbors know anyone named “Emily” because you have been introducing yourself all week as “Lady Buzzyay, Queen of the Bees!” You get the picture.

In other words, you’re heading to the middle of the desert, and there is no guarantee that we’ll be able to deliver a message in an emergency; it’s important to weigh that before you leave home. If you are awaiting news, you can actively check in at Playa Info, and in truly dire circumstances, you can take the bus into Gerlach to use a pay phone, cellular phone, or take advantage of the free wifi coverage there.

**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/***\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**

GET SHOWERED WITH… WHAT?!? EWWWW, GROSS.

It’s nice to shower others with affection, but the non-potable water (that means it’s not safe for drinking) in the water trucks isn’t a safe alternative to a shower since it can contain all sorts of icky things that can make you sick. Think twice before you run after the trucks watering the road. Better yet, bring a solar camping shower instead.

While we’re talking about bathing, keep in mind that public showers, baths, and pools are PROHIBITED at the event site since there is no way to make them safe, or for the authorities to approve them. Showers that are set up for you and your camp mates are fine, just as long as they’re not open to the public.

**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/***\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**

YOU’RE SICK OR HURT AT BURNING MAN, NOW WHAT?

Q: What do I do if I get hurt or sick on the playa?

A: We hope, of course, that you won’t get sick or hurt…but being radically self-reliant also means remembering to bring a first aid kit (http://bit.ly/Afd8M) and treating yourself or your campmates for minor first aid needs. Should your illness or injury be more severe than you can manage without help, there are Emergency Services Department (ESD) medical stations on the 3:00 and 9:00 plazas and the Rampart clinic at 5:10 and Esplanade. Look for the red LED cross on top of the stations at 3:00 and 9:00.

Q: What if they can’t manage my problem?

A: If the on-site medical providers feel that you have a medical emergency that requires a higher level of care than can be provided on the playa, you may need to visit a hospital in Reno. Depending on the seriousness of your condition, that can be accomplished by either getting a ride from a friend or being transported by an ambulance or helicopter. Remember to bring your ID, insurance card, cell phone and wallet when you go. Also note that if you get transported by ambulance or helicopter you’ll need to arrange for a friend to pick you up after your hospital visit. There are no shuttles from the hospitals back to the playa. However, if you are stranded, Humboldt General Hospital (HGH) EMS will assist you the next time they come to Reno. HGH is in touch with hospitals to coordinate that effort. Seriously though, your friends should pick you up so you can buy ice cream and snacks for your camp. While HGH will help you out if you’re stranded, they certainly will not stop for you to go shopping.

Q: Is there a clinic in Gerlach?

A: THE CLINIC THAT USED TO BE IN GERLACH IS NOW CLOSED. Your closest point of care for those coming or going East (depending on which route you take) is Pershing General Hospital in Lovelock, Nevada http://pershinghospital.org/  Westbound your choices are more plentiful with several hospitals in Reno.

Q: Where can I get a prescription filled?

A: It’s best to bring adequate supplies that you need to the playa. Should you need to get a prescription refilled, the closest pharmacies are in Fernley or Reno.

**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/***\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**

DON’T GET TAKEN FOR A (HELICOPTER) RIDE

The most expensive ride on the playa is the one you never want to take: an emergency medical helicopter transport to one of the Reno hospitals. Even if you have insurance it still might leave you with a bill for several thousand dollars that your insurance won’t cover. Of course it is considerably worse if you have no insurance at all since medically-necessary air transport may cost $25,000!

Every year, it seems, we hear a story or two of a Burner who gets airlifted off playa only to practically need to be resuscitated when they receive their bill. Given that only an unlucky few get airlifted every year, chances are good you’ll never need it, but if you have a complicated pre-existing condition or want to have some extra coverage “just in case,” it’s worth considering the Flight Plan Membership that Care Flight offers. Their program covers your entire family for $55/year and also applies to other air medical services in California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Wyoming. Non-Nevada residents are eligible for this program. See their website for all the details and fine print:

RANTING AND RAILING ABOUT STRUCTURAL SAFETY

Since *you* assume all liability for the safety of any structure you construct, here are some important questions you should ask yourself when designing and building a structure at Burning Man:

• Building a platform?
– What’s the load capacity?
– How many people can it hold and how will you police it?

• Railings are required to be well-designed and built; how will you accomplish that?

• Have you factored in the high winds environment of the Black Rock Desert for your design?

If you have not fully considered all aspects of your plan from a structural engineering perspective, you have more research to do.

BLUE LIGHT SPECIAL AT THE MAN BURN: GET HELP WHEN YOU NEED IT

Burn night can be chaotic (to say the least) when everyone crowds around the Man. Big crowds can be so much fun, but way less so when you need help and can’t seem to find it. To take the guesswork out of finding help, ESD has created safety contact points outside the Burn circle. One is located on the 3 o’clock side of the Man and the other is located on the 9 o’clock side of the Man. Both of them are along the promenade just on the edge of the crowd. Each contact point is marked by a bright blue rotating emergency beacon and both tend to be easily visible from the edge of the crowd.

Each rally point has a host of resources dedicated to it in case there is a need, including Black Rock Rangers, Law Enforcement, ESD Medical, ESD Fire and HGH EMS. Just walk up and ask, and the right resource will follow you back to where you need help – finding a specific location in the mass of people is very difficult when it’s solely based on a verbal report.

**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/***\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**

WHY IT’S A GOOD IDEA TO CARRY YOUR ID ON THE PLAYA

Reasons? We gots three of them!

1. If you get hurt on playa and transported while unconscious we can identify you.
2. In case you get arrested and have to prove your identity to law enforcement.
3. If you’re lucky enough to look under 21 and want a drink in any camp that serves alcohol.

THE *KEY* PART OF PREPARING YOUR VEHICLE FOR THE PLAYA

Every year, Burners lock their keys in their car or lose their keys — big bummer, right? Doesn’t need to be. One simple step will save you tons of time, hassle and money:

MAKE AN EXTRA KEY and store it someplace secure. Hassle avoided!

DR LASER LOVE

…or how I learned to play with lasers safely.

Yes, we all love us some lasers on the playa, but before you fire up your light show, please do some basic homework to ensure your project is safe. Lasers are by no means toys. They can cause blindness, fires and other problems if set up improperly or if the incorrect equipment is used. Remember to install lasers in such a way that they point above eye level, as the beam can temporarily or permanently blind people.

If you are going to have a laser set up on playa and no one in your camp is a laser professional consider these tips:

* Use the lowest power laser that will effectively work for your needs and use it at the lowest power settings to accomplish your effect.
* Treat laser operations as a serious safety matter.
* Ensure all operators are sober.
* Designate a laser safety officer to make sure your lasers are being operated safely.
* If your laser operates automatically or without an operator, having a laser safety officer monitoring the system is just as important to ensure nothing goes wrong.

STRANDED AT A RENO HOSPITAL WITH NOTHING BUT A BACKLESS GOWN?

So you wake up and realize you are in a hospital bed. Then you remember that you didn’t put any money or your mobile phone in the pockets of the fun fur outfit you wore out to the party by the trash fence. Worse yet, now you are being told you are going to be discharged in 24 hours. How do you get back to the playa?

Your friends on the playa of course! In the vast majority of circumstances your friends already know you’re in the hospital and are on their way to pick you up. But what to do if you get stranded? Luckily, our friends at Humboldt General Hospital (HGH) EMS will coordinate with Reno hospitals to get you back to Black Rock City when one of their ambulances return. While this resource is available it’s important to note that HGH EMS is NOT a shuttle service. HGH EMS is generously offering this as a last resort to those who are truly stranded at the hospital. We very much appreciate their help for the few people each year who get stranded by offering this last resort means to get you back to Burning Man.

LOOKING FOR SOMEONE MISSING ON PLAYA?

The only place on playa that serves as a central collection point for emergency messages is Playa Info. While the Rangers, ESD, HGH or Law Enforcement *may* have the relevant information, only Playa Info serves as the clearinghouse for all such messages.

ADOPT-AN-INTERSECTION IN BLACK ROCK CITY

Unfortunately some people like to steal the street signs from BRC on their way out of the event. While this may be a cool souvenir for some it causes havoc for the medical crews, fire trucks, Black Rock Rangers and other resources by making it difficult to find the location of those who need help in an emergency.

We implore everyone to leave the street signs where they are on your way out of the city. Obviously most people are not guilty of stealing street signs, but there will always be those that persist… so we are asking some of you wonderful and awesome Burners to help by adopting an intersection.

A simple way to help everyone…

The idea was inspired a few years ago when participants spontaneously improvised street signs to make it possible to navigate the city in absence of the originals. If you find a sign that’s missing, try using some cardboard, a marker, and some duct tape to make a legible replacement with just a little effort. It will not only help your friends find your camp, it will help all of the emergency responders and will be of great help to your fellow citizens of Black Rock City. It’s a small act that makes a big difference.

FREQUENCY COORDINATION: ARE YOU USING TWO-WAY RADIOS ON THE PLAYA?

Are you planning on using two-way radio for any reason (greater than 5 watts) on the playa? The Emergency Services Department coordinates spectrum and systems to avoid interference between various projects on-playa and the Burning Man two way radio infrastructure.

Please note that in general, we do not coordinate AM or FM broadcast radio, WiFi, HAM, FRS (aka Talkabouts), GMRS, CB, or RC bands. However if you are planning a high power radio application in any of these bands please let us know so we can isolate the signal in case of interference.

Please contact ESD Communications at http://911.burningman.com/ if you have questions or to register your frequency request.

“911” SERVICE IN BLACK ROCK CITY

By now most know that there is very limited cell phone service in the area surrounding Gerlach. If you’re lucky enough to have a signal in Black Rock City please do not call 911 for problems within the event site. The dispatch center you would eventually reach doesn’t manage the available resources on playa. It’s far faster to flag down a Ranger or send someone to fetch help at a Ranger Outpost or ESD Station. That said, there is a way to directly call for help since ESD’s on site emergency dispatch monitors a designated emergency channel on the license-free MURS (Multi User Radio Service) radio band.

MURS is a service similar to FRS (Family Radio Service, the frequencies that Motorola Talkabouts and similar radios use). FRS is extremely overcrowded and it’s used by thousands of participants during the event. FRS radios are not powerful enough to effectively communicate throughout Black Rock City. MURS, in contrast, is currently not in common usage and legally can operate at a higher power so it can communicate across the entire playa.

By reserving this “911” channel while MURS use is less common at Burning Man, we hope this channel will be maintained for emergency use only.

You will need to purchase your own MURS radio to contact ESD 911, but the other four MURS channels can also be just like FRS radios for other purposes. Large camps or villages might also choose to make one part of their group planning efforts and store it in a public place for emergency use.

Why do I want one of these when my FRS radio works just fine?

* If you’re part of a large theme camp it could be a good investment to have a MURS radio around to call ESD emergency dispatch for your group, especially if you have members who have known health issues or the risk of injury is of special concern.

* Large art projects working out on the open playa will be able to get help faster.

* Camps that are on the outer-rings of the city are far from a Emergency Services station don’t have to send runners for help when an emergency arises.

* The other 4 channels on MURS can be a great alternative to the overcrowded FRS channels, especially if your camp has an art-car or event-wide project they want to coordinate.

* Emergency Services Dispatch cannot be reached on an FRS radio.

Calling 911 on a MURS radio:

Set your MURS radio to channel 5 (154.600 MHz, CTCSS/PL 97.4) to reach the Black Rock City Emergency Services Dispatch. Each brand has its own labeling system so please refer to your user manual to see how CTCSS/PL 97.4 is labeled. Using any other “privacy codes” on channel 5 will interfere with 911. Instead limit your personal use to channels 1-4.

FOR ALL MURS USERS: we ask that all Burning Man participants respect that channel 5 will be used as a emergency channel only. While the other channels are fine for use as an alternative to FRS we want to stress that channel 5 on MURS please be kept open for emergencies and not used for any other purpose.

An example of a compatible radio:

Dakota Alert MURS portable (operational controls just like common FRS radios, with selectable channel and code on the display) http://bit.ly/bmgDqI

Or if you don’t want to buy a radio for this purpose you can contact your local two way radio rental service in your area and inquire about renting a VHF radio for this purpose (and they would program it for you as part of the rental, making configuring the radio hassle free if you’re not radio tech savvy).

If you have further questions or need help in finding a source for radios, please contact us for more information at:

WHAT? IT RAINS ON THE PLAYA?

Rain storms, while much less common than dust storms, do sometimes happen. In the event of such an unlikely event, here are some tips to consider:

* Listen to BMIR for updates and information.
* Cover and secure anything electrical.
* Like with dust storms, check the structures and the art in your camp to be sure it will be safe in the wind and rain.
* Don’t drive on wet playa, you’re vehicle is likely to get stuck.

BLACK ROCK RANGERS

In addition to the Emergency Services Department, the Black Rock Rangers play an important role in our community safety.

Black Rock Rangers
The Black Rock Rangers are a volunteer organization dedicated to the safety of the citizens of Black Rock City and its environs. The Rangers are a broad cross-section of the Burning Man community who volunteer some of their time in a role of non-confrontational community mediators. They are empowered by the community and the Burning Man board to address safety concerns, mediate disputes, and resolve conflicts when they cannot be resolved by the persons involved.

Rangers are available to any Black Rock citizen who needs their help and can be found patrolling the city, in the area around the base of the Man, at Ranger HQ near Center Camp, and at the Ranger Outposts located in the 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock plazas, directly across from the ESD stations. Rangers can be identified by their khaki-colored costumes with a Black Rock Ranger logo on the back.

Rangers rely on the Burning Man community to help them do their jobs; there’s a lot more participants than there are Rangers and you, too, are the eyes and ears of safety in Black Rock City. Here’s a few FAQs on accessing the Rangers as a resource (and ways that you can help):

Q: What should you do if you lose your child in Black Rock City?

A: Parents who have become separated from their child should find a Ranger (either at a Ranger Outpost, Ranger HQ, or a pair patrolling the city), who will report the child as missing. That information then goes out to all the Rangers patrolling Black Rock City.

Q: What should you do if you find a child who can’t find their parents?

A: Ask the child to come with you and a friend to a Ranger Outpost or Ranger HQ, and once you get there, the Rangers will relay the information about the child and the parents to all the Rangers patrolling Black Rock City (and probably offer to give you a big hug for helping out!).

Q: What if I’m having a dispute with a neighbor or a campmate that I can’t resolve?

A: The Rangers are happy to listen to everyone involved in a difficult situation and will work to help you come to a solution that you can live with for a week in the desert. A solution doesn’t always mean everyone involved is going to get exactly what they wanted when they started looking for a solution, but Rangers will work to help prevent a conflict to prevent it from escalating and find a workable solution.

**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**

WHAT’S THAT YOU SAY? FUN?

The Black Rock Rangers are launching a new program for families this year… and they’re calling it FUN!  The Family Unification Network.  In instances of a lost child or separation, FUN helps to reunite children with parents faster.

Here’s how it works: parents and children register together at Ranger Headquarters in Center Camp. After providing simple identifying information, children will receive a unique wristband with a serial number, which will identify the child, parent or guardian, and camp location. And that’s it!  Simple!

Should your child become separated from you, he or she just needs to find a Ranger. The wristband will facilitate a speedy reunion.

Registration is open daily at Ranger Headquarters before noon and after 2pm.

****Staff and volunteers with families are strongly encouraged to register their children in support of this program.****

**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**

As the DPW works through dust, wind and heat to build the infrastructure of Black Rock City (as we speak … see Curley’s “The Big Bang” post in the Burning Blog: http://bit.ly/OXImI6), we imagine you deep in your feverish preparations for the Burn this year (we’re right there with you!).

We went out of our way to dig up some inspiring videos, photo galleries and a song(!) to include in this JRS to help get your motor running, in case it needed a jumpstart. Sure worked for us! Goose-bumpy and teary-eyed and the whole bit. We’re really really excited for Burning Man this year! You’ll really want to check ’em out, and then get packing, people!

We’re going to keep pounding this home the last couple weeks here, so bear with us … there are important preparation topics critical to the future of our event, and we need YOU to educate yourself about them and PLAN AHEAD. Read up and make sure your first-timer friends do too. (In fact, we’ve just made it even easier to SHARE this information with your social network: we’ve added share buttons on ALL preparation pages of the Burning Man website, including the Survival Guide. Just click and share!)

Finally, in case you missed it in the last JRS, we’re letting you know that this promises to be one of the dustiest years we’ve ever seen. If last year was your first year, YOU WERE BLESSED BY UNBELIEVABLY GOOD WEATHER AND PLAYA CONDITIONS. And it won’t be like that this year, no siree. Plan ahead for very dusty conditions! We love the dust, but it’s less fun when you’re not prepared for it. We got ya covered: http://survival.burningman.com/your-survival-in-brc

TICKET UPDATE

All tickets to Burning Man 2012 have now been sold and sent to their buyers. In addition, earlier this week the Secure Ticket Exchange Program (STEP) closed, both to people putting more tickets in as well as tickets being offered for sale. We’re thrilled to say that EVERYONE that was waiting in STEP who still wanted a ticket was able to get one. Great news!

Are you still looking for a ticket? Are there any out there? Yes, there are. People’s plans change, especially around NOW, and we’re seeing and hearing about a lot of tickets changing hands in the community. Keep your eyes peeled on Tickets Offered board on the ePlaya (http://eplaya.burningman.com), your Regional discussion lists (http://regionals.burningman.com), Craigslist, and your friends and campmates for available tickets. Please remember to be careful when buying a third-party ticket, and never agree to wire money to anyone in exchange for one.

If you’re looking to offload your ticket, you can sell your ticket-in-hand, or change the name at Will Call. (here’s how: http://tickets2.burningman.com/faq.php#elsepickup). If yours is being held at Will Call and is a NON-transferrable ticket (bought through STEP or the recent Limited Sale), it is not eligible for a name change.  As always, please resell tickets at face value.

Yes, it’s certainly been a challenging year for tickets given the advent of a scarcity market, and we appreciate everybody’s patience and support as we’ve navigated these new waters — we’re dedicated to continuing to work hard to improve the system for everyone in years to come.

We hope to see you on playa!

DRUG-SNIFFING DOGS ON PLAYA?

Yep, they’re out there. After our Law Enforcement edition of the JRS, folks asked about drug-sniffing dogs. Yes, the Bureau of Land Management and the Nevada Department of Investigations use drug sniffing dogs on playa … and it’s well within their rights to do so. For more info:http://www.flexyourrights.org/taxonomy/term/41.

Your best bet? Don’t have drugs in your vehicle, in your tent, or at all for that matter.

CAN WE FILM INTERACTIONS WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT?

A couple people asked whether or not it’s OK to film law enforcement interactions with participants. It’s a good question worth answering. Long story short, it’s a fine line. The First Amendment protects people who film law enforcement. But people cannot interfere with law enforcement in any way. If people videotape they need to stay out of the way and they need to NOT provoke law enforcement officers in the process.

OR-58 LANE RESTRICTIONS AND OVERNIGHT CLOSURES

Wally Glenn (who is one of our very favorite pains in the ass) generously crafted our driving directions from the Pacific Northwest (http://bit.ly/ON91Fb)back in the day. He equally generously writes to let us know:

“I am getting updating my directions for PNW Burners and I just heard from Gameshow that OR-58 has lane restrictions and overnight closures. If anyone follows the directions for Route 1 or 2, they could face significant delays getting to Black Rock City. I am advising people to take Route 4 or Route 3 instead.

Anyone in the Eugene / Springfield area of Oregon will need to seek an alternate route through Medford, then east along 140 to CA-299.

OR-58 Total Closures Near Eugene

I am collating other issues and putting them up on the PNW directions page at: http://gwally.com/directions/

Don’t Fuel up in Gerlach
http://gwally.com/directions/000948.php

Your ‘Don’t gas up in Gerlach’ thing may not work for PNW burners. It’s 220 miles from Cedarville to Black Rock City and back. I am advising people to consider your advice, but be practical, since in my opinion it’s dangerous to run out of gas between Gerlach and Cedarville.”

HITCHHIKER’S GUIDE TO THE BURN

Will this be your first Burning Man? Been going for well over a decade? Two of ’em? Regardless, this project promises to serve many a Burner in their efforts to Burn well. As a resource for our community, we thought it was worth your consideration. Sean Kemp writes:

“Do you remember how ill prepared you were for your first Burning Man, despite all your friends’ best efforts? While it is true that nothing can truly prepare you for the awesomeness that is Burning Man, it is important to know what to bring, the right attitude to have, what the culture is like (and how it evolved), and what your rights are on the Playa.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Burn is a comprehensive event guide to Burning Man, detailing everything from the history and evolution of the event to traveling to and from (and around in) Black Rock City to building a camp (wiring said camp for solar power, grey water disposal, etc.) and surviving the Black Rock Desert (what to bring, the culture, how to change a bicycle tire, etc.) for a week. I have spent the last year in close collaboration with Burning Man and doing lots of painstaking research to bring you this work. Enjoy!

The eBook is available here: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/210317

The kickstarter for the first print run is here: http://kck.st/ON5gj8 ”

AWESOME AUDIO TRACK FROM SKYSPLITTER

We’re pretty wary of people sending us Burning Man-inspired audio tracks they created, cuz as you can imagine the quality varies quite widely. But this one really got us bumpin’ (maybe because we were brought up with Phil Collins, but that’s another story). Anyway, we thought you might enjoy it and might give it a play while you’re packing your gear. Skysplitter writes:

“This is my own musical dedication to the people and energy of Burning Man 2012. I created this with Ableton Live v4 in a total of about 20 hours, with a little help from a younger version of Phil Collins. “Take Me Home (Skysplitter’s Dusted Mix)” will hopefully capture a bit of the spirit of Burning Man in all its fertile glory. )'( Glad to be returning home very soon!

JOIN IN THE ELECTRIC PARADE!

This sounds like it’ll be amazing, right? Michael writes:

“Attention bikers, pedestrians, stilt walkers, zombies, bunnies and electric vehicles alike. Meet at the Man Thursday at 1630h if you’re ready to join “Electric Parade” and show how to get from A to B in style using human and renewable energy powered transportation. Yes. We want all you electric people to show your colors and join us when we complete a CO2 shaped route on the open playa starting from the Man. With the help of GPS tracking you can be part of a CO2 shaped “tag” as we parade our way through the open playa. Basically, we’ll all be brushes, smartphone technology the paint and Black Rock City our playground and canvas. As long as your mode of transportation is based on renewable technology we can’t wait to ROCK the dust with you! …And if you happen to provide non-stationary music (live or dj) or a cooler on wheels we’d love to hear from you!
