Afterglow recognized as an Official Burning Man Regional Event!
The Vancouver Regional Contacts are happy to announce that we have just received notification from the Burning Man Organization that Afterglow has been approved as an Official Burning Man Regional Event.

Receiving this status is an honour, and we want to ensure that everyone feels included and is invited to participate, so that Afterglow will indeed be a radically inclusive community event. Read on below for Erik’s callout for participation and visit the website to figure out where you fit in.

This status allows the Production team to utilize trademarked words such as Burning Man and Decompression to assist in their outreach to the broader burner community. The RCs are tasked with ensuring that the event promises to fulfill the requirements for an official event, and we will continue to follow the event’s progress up until the event wrap up report is completed.

We would also like to acknowledge BurnBC in their efforts to produce a fall Decompression event, and look forward to supporting their future endeavours.

Congratulations to the Afterglow Production Team and to our community for making this possible.
Onwards and forwards, only 29 days until Vancouver’s Decompression: Afterglow!!

The TEST Launch of the live event. MUSIC LINE-UP TBA

Over the last year I’ve spoken to many of you about a project that fuses dance culture with democratic process. The result being an organization that funds community grants which are selected through live voting. For now this project is being called the New Democratic Dance Party (NDDP).

What is the NDDP you ask?
The NDDP is a network of event organizers, promoters, DJs, performers, musicians, dancers, artists and more. The NDDP organizes dance events to pool community funds and resources which then enable socially conscious community projects. These projects are chosen through a direct democratic process that will take place LIVE at the event.

Why?
1) Enable members of the community to pursue their dreams
2) Create independence away from our current financial system
3) Give us cause for celebration.
4) Build community
5) Put our culture in a positive light to the rest of society

How?
Do you have an and idea or project you wish to start? Need some funding?
The NDDP is looking to the public to submit written proposals to apply for grants. Once we gather a number of proposals, four will be selected. A committee of four (diverse in age, gender, sexuality, finance, and race) will each nominate a proposal to go forward to be voted on by the public at the Dance Party.

You pay for entry into the party ($15-$20). When you pay you are then given a BALLOT.
Part way through the party, we will showcase the four nominated proposals on the projectors. The ticket (ballot) buyers will then go to the polls and use their ballot to vote on one of the four proposals they would like the nights proceeds to fund.

Once the votes have been counted, and the door money has been counted, we call to stage the nominee who received the most votes. We then give the winner 10 minutes or so to explain their project in more detail. If they need help from the community this is also the time to find human resources. By making it public, the person is held accountable by the community to follow through on their project and to use the grant wisely and appropriately, while knowing they have a network of support to aid them if need be. Even if the grant is insufficient to fund their entire project, the NDDP will check in with the person awarded the grant to see which tasks they put the grant towards, and which tasks they will need further aid for.

As an event organizer I know that it can be hard to make any kind of $ off of dance events. In order for this community to be able to raise enough finance to support a decent sized project, we will need people to volunteer time, resources, and skill. Essentially the less overhead costs, the larger the grants will be for projects.

WHO?
YOU!

Right now we are looking for people to support this idea. We want to make these democratic dance parties a quality production. In order for that to happen we need the help from the community to help out.

We NEED DJs, promoters, event planners, performers, artists, photographers, vidioegraphers, bloggers etc.
But we need more than just people to make the event happen.
WE NEED PROJECTS TO FUND!
If you have an idea to submit or wish to help produce an event, please send an email to:
[email protected]

TOGETHER we can pursue our dreams!

Vancouver Life Tree ‘Ejaculation’ Party

Yes, that’s right, we just called it that. Given that our last party was named The ‘Erection’ Party, we felt that for this last ‘hurrah’ a thematically similar name was appropriate!

The Life Tree crew wants to extend our sincerest gratitude and thanks to the Burning Van community by holding one last bash, this way we can spend a bit of extra time praising all our volunteers, supporters and burn spectators and shower them with the appropriate levels of… love 😉 (What did you think I was going to say!? :P)

The party format will be similar to last time, a keg, a bar, a potluck, some interactive art and this time a DJ! The party will be held at a different location from last, this time @ the Stoop Skate House – 4690 Baldwin St. a 5-10 minute walk down from Nanaimo Station

DJs:
Name: Electro Heavy
Style: Mashups – DnB – Jungle

Drinks:
$10 – Unlimited access to the keg ($2 discount if you bring something for the potluck)
Various drink mixes will be available separate from the keg.

Food:  Potluck!

Art:
Interactive ‘At The Burn I __________’ mega chalk board.
Decoration station the Life Tree Bar!

Any and all interactive art and performances are welcome, please contact us if there needs to be some sort of special accommodation. Post Burning Man Events
(A note from the Vancouver Regional Contacts)

So you’re back from the playa and you want to throw a party? Super duper awesome! We love it when you do stuff!

Just don’t call it a ‘Decompression’ or a ‘Decom.’ or use the term “Burning Man”. These words (and a few others) are actually protected for use within the Burning Man Network and in order to use them or to hold an “official” Burning Man Regional event, you’ve got to fit some mega-precise criteria. It CAN be done, requires some lead time, and as Regional Contacts, we are here to help.

Seem kind if harsh? Well, it is intended to protect you and our community from exploitation by commercial entities and to ensure that officially recognized Burning Man events follow the Ten Principles, get proper insurance and have safety protocols in place.

Please read more on the subject and review the Criteria at the following link.
Email [email protected] to discuss your event proposal and your plan to meet the criteria.
http://burningvan.ca/events/criteria-for-official-burning-man-regional-events

What about an official Decompression? What about another Dust Off?!
Unfortunately, the location we used for last year’s Decom is no longer available for large events, and there are no concrete plans for an official Vancouver Decompression event at this time, BUT:
we’ve already heard from several groups in the past week who are jazzed to celebrate another successful Burn, and we’ll be working with them and connecting folks where there is potential for collaboration on post-Burn events.

We may still be able to pull off an official Decompression event for this year, but it’s too early to tell at this point, we’re still waiting to see formal proposals. We’ll keep you posted!

Oh, and we try to add any Burner related or highly Burner attended events on the BMV Google Calendar at  http://burningvan.ca/calendar, so if you have something to add, email [email protected]!

Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup
Date: September 22nd, 2012
Time: 12 pm to 4 pm
Place: Acadia Beach

GVIAS is participating in the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup and we need your help. We’ve been assigned a section of Vancouver’s coastline, and we’re going to go and pick up MOOP (Matter Out Of Place). Burners have awesome mooping skills so I’m sure we can do a great job of it.

Location: Acadia Beach – our assigned cleanup area is from the Acadia Beach parking lot to Tower Beach.
To get there, drive West along NW Marine Drive, you will pass all of the Spanish Banks parking lots. You will come to a large grey sign that says “Pacific Spirit Park” and another, smaller, parking lot. That is Acadia Beach. There is a small sign in the parking area, but it isn’t visible from the road. Park there and come down to the grass, we’ll meet by the picnic tables. (Google Maps does not know where Acadia Beach is)

Things to bring:
– Gloves
– Garbage bags and/or buckets
– Sturdy shoes and/or rubber boots

SeaCompression 2012: PINK

Welcome back from the playa, folks!  I hope you’ve got all the dust shook out of your gear, because it’s past time to prepare for SeaCompression.  This will be our ELEVENTH SeaCompression, ZOMG.

For the record, here are the details:

SeaCompression 2012 [1]
Saturday October 13 2012, 6p – 2a
SW 150th Street and 5th Ave SW, Burien, WA

It’s the same place we held it last year, but we will be taking over even more space.  Tickets are not yet available, but we’ll get that info posted as soon as possible.

For those of you newbies to the community, this is Seattle’s official Burning Man decompression party, sponsored by our local non-profit org, Ignition Northwest, and built by YOU, the burner community.  Last year we filled two acres with theme camps, art installations, and performance spaces.  Every year it takes literally hundreds of people to host SeaCompression, and there are numerous ways to participate.  To get involved, visit the Participation page on the SeaCompression website, here:
http://seacompression.org/participate/

There, you will find many things to sign up for, including performing on our stage, setting up your theme camps, finding parking for your art car, helping DPW build the “city”, joining the gate crew, and more.

RSVP on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/283679135065415/

TRANSPORT OFFER FROM VANCOUVER CORE
Hey boys and girls,

The Vancouver Core Project is growing every day!  We have more burners join us for builds every weekend. And now you can join us for the ride down as well.
We have extra room in our truck and are fundraising by renting it to you!
That is right, you don’t have to pack your car to the gills this year.  We will take it down and back.  It is really easy too.

Just bring your bins, tents, massive sleeping sets, and bikes (yes even bikes) over to my place on:

Sunday August 19th From 11- 5pm
1003 Queens Ave
New Westminster, BC V3M 1M4
That is at Queens Ave and 10th St.

I will be there with a big 2 ton truck ready to make your car lighter.  It is a fundraiser to help us get things south so all we are asking is $25 for a bin, $40 for a bike. Have a bunch of stuff we can cut you a deal.  We all win! If you have a large or heavy item you would like us to ship down please shoot me an email.

A few simple rules to get us through the border:

  • Please label your bin/ bike/ whatever
  • We need a written inventory of your belongings
  • No fuels of any kind
  • No water or food
  • No illegal substances or paraphernalia

We will arrive on Playa on Wednesday the 22.  I will give the truck’s location to people as they drop off their things.
To get your things home again it is just as easy.  I will need everything loaded by 1pm on Sunday. Everything will be back to a secure location on Tuesday Sep. 4th.
If I could ask everyone to pick it up as soon as possible.

If you have any special needs or question please email me.
Kevin

============================================== PNW TEMPLE SUNRISE – Wed Aug 29
Calling BC/Washington burners… Vancouver, Victoria, Bellingham, Seattle plus surrounding areas & any of our friends! Wouldn’t it be nice to be sure to catch at least ONE SUNRISE?|
Wouldn’t it be nice to share that with the people you know from the default world?

  • That’s what WE THOUGHT!
  • An annual tradition, the last several years’ Wednesday morning PNW gatherings have been really great! An opportunity to see many people that you otherwise might not see at any other time during the week… Several people said they really appreciated the callout, as it ensured that they would catch at least ONE sunrise! And it’s a sweet time to visit the Temple, mid-week, mid-progress with everyone adding their words & thoughts…Meet you at the Temple, sunrise side, on Wednesday at 6am, & we’ll watch the sun rise together.
Nice & simple, bring whatever you feel to share, or not!
    Invite your friends, campmates, associates… & we’ll see you there.FB RSVP https://www.facebook.com/events/464061633622423/

GVIAS ART GRANTS!!
Tthis is the first year that GVIAS has created a fund for art outside of large events.  We are currently taking applications for large scale art that needs extra funding for either a local exhibition or event, or anything international.  Really any art created by our community is eligible although of course, the same standards will apply when grants are given:  Priority is given to interactive art, art created by GVIAS members or our community, art that is involved more within the community structure.  As the funding is quite low, it is likely that only 1 or 2 projects will receive some extra funding.

Please send in a request for the next grant period:  July/August/Sept – totally $500 to grant.
Send in your requests for selection by August 3rd.

There is also another $500 to allocate for Oct/Nov/Dec and $500 for Jan/Feb/March 2013.

If you require any further information, please contact the grants committee at: [email protected]

Burn in the Forest tickets update
Okay folks, three days remaining to get in your requests for ticket transfers and such. The Registration Team wraps up their work on July 7, 2012. After that, you’re on your own to figure shit out.

The only way to get a ticket to BitF at this point is to put your name on this shared doc & hope someone phones you before Saturday when they realize they have an extra ticket. The transfer process requires the new person to fill out a form, so please get your reggie transfers in ASAP, ie not at midnight tomorrow night!

This sheet is NOT administered by the registration team but by event participants! Radical Self-Reliance… and stuff. All your questions are likely answered at: http://burnintheforest.com/tickets/

Oh and if you just got your ticket, go see the announce msgs you may have missed, with things like things to bring, etc… they are archived here: http://burnintheforest.com/participate/announce/

Rangers & Peer Support WANT YOU!

Howdy Folks,

My name is Wrangler.
For those of you who don’t know me, I am from Victoria and just finished leading our regional event Otherworld. I am excited to be leading the Ranger team for Burn in the Forest with Andrew Martens. We are also working closely with the Peer Support team.
I am writing you today because we need to have a few more volunteers for both teams.

As a Ranger, you will take responsibility to ensure people are having a good time. Just walk around and checkout the action. Our gift is to mediate conflict using non-violent communication. We are an ambassador for the event and a source of information. We are the first responders and need to maintain communications within the event.

As a Peer Support volunteer, you will take responsibility for your fellow guests. Our primary goal is to ensure there is a safe place for people experiencing a crisis. Our gift is to provide the warm comfort of a hot drink, some water, or maybe just someone to listen to you. We are here for you. When you are ready we make every effort to reunite you with your friends to ensure you have the community support you need.

Together, the Rangers and the Peer Support teams represent the backbone of our community. Our gift to the community is to make sure everyone is safe and having a good time.

The practical requirement to be a part of these teams is to volunteer for one four hour shift and be sober.
We have a highly recommended training workshop
Saturday, July 7th
12pm to 5pm
1738 Parker, just off Commercial

If you can make it, please RSVP so we know how many people to expect.
If you get lost, please contact my Ranger Lead partner, Andrew at             604.269.9463
The workshop will cover conflict resolution, active listening, communication, rangering, and peer support.

If you would like to volunteer for Rangers or Peer Support, please register and sign-up on the website:
http://burnintheforest.com/volunteeroptions/

See you in the forest,
~ Wrangler ~

Pre-BitF work that needs to be done in Richmond

Hi all.
So, there’s a bunch of work that needs to be done this Saturday, July 7th. These tasks include simple carpentry repairs, white-wash painting, and making signs. We’d love to have your help – in fact, please come and help! Wear appropriate and safe clothing (ie no open toed shoes) and if you have tools that you’d prefer to use yourself, please feel free to bring them too.
11am ’til we’re done @ Lummox and Robert’s place – 2200 No. 6 Road, Richmond.
Cheers, Pi – on behalf on the Production Team

=================================================
CORE Life Tree Build day!

Life Tree will be holding a public build party this Saturday July 7th @ 1:30pm (yay!). We have lots of leaves to cut for our tree and we’re asking for some community help!

We’re looking for people who may have used a circular saw before (or feel confident using one) and others to help hold boards for cutting. Please RSVP at [email protected] or on our facebook event page at: http://bit.ly/LifeTreeBuildParty1 so we know if we have too many volunteers.

We’ll bring the saws and saw horses, you just bring your wonderful selves!

With some community help we don’t expect the building to go on too long (just a few hours), but we are hoping to turn this into a mini-afternoon-potluck-get-together.

Come for the build and stay for some snacks and drinks so we can all get to know more of our community! Help by bringing some snacks and beverages of your own!

If you can’t make this one, fret-not, we’ll be having at least 2 more build events leading up to the burn! Also, those looking to help in different ways, or have unique skills that they want to offer up, please email [email protected] or message the facebook page at: http://www.facebook.com/BurningManVancouverLifeTree2012

The address is 1784 east 7th Avenue; it’s about a block or so from Commercial Drive Station, come in the back, building starts at 1:30pm.

Hope to see some of you there!
