Burn in the Forest  2013 Dates : Thursday July 11th to Sunday July 14th

The Greater Vancouver Interactive Art Society is happy to announce the dates for our summer Regional Burning Man multi-day event. Save the date now and begin planning that awesome theme camp or art installation.  Tickets will be on sale from the end of April.

The dates for BitF are dependent on a number of factors, mainly weather conditions.  Although, this is never guaranteed as demonstrated by the unusual conditions that led to last year’s flooding.  Typically, the end of June to beginning of July has high water levels and risks flooding of the beach. A later date has a higher risk of a fire ban and we would be unable to have a burn.  This is why we choose this weekend.  Every year we do our best to coordinate our dates with neighbouring regionals (Critical Massive and Otherworld) and other major events in the summer but we are restricted by these factors.

One extra day!
We are pleased to announce that we have added a day!  The good news is that we can do this without increasing the ticket price from last year. We need more Rangers to make this possible, please consider taking the ranger training and offering  your support.  We have a number of training opportunities coming up,  the first is on Saturday February 9th.

Seattle’s Critical Massive Dates will be announced ASAP!
Attention all Critical Northwest participants:
The dates for Critical have not yet been set but we’re working feverishly to get our venue on lock-down and settle on exact dates. As soon as we know, so will you!

Is it possible that Critical will conflict with Burn In The Forest or SOAK? Well, yes, it is a possibility that will depend largely on what dates our venue owners can give us. But rest assured we’ll do everything we can to avoid conflicts / overlaps.

Stay tuned as we’ll be bringing Critical Information as soon as we have it. In the meantime consider heading over to http://www.criticalnw.org/ and sign up for Critical Announce to get all the latest dropped right in your inbox.

Burning Man Tickets: The Burner Profile! SIGN UP ASAP!

The new Burning Man Burner Profile tool is up and running smoothly with over 7,000 registrants so far!
To register and snag your preferred username, please visit http://profiles.burningman.com/.
*Remember, those wishing to participate in 2013 ticket sales must have a Burner Profile.*

ANNOUNCING THE BURNER PROFILE

The Burner Profile is a new system to help facilitate the flow of information we regularly collect from Burning Man participants for ticket sales, theme camp and art installation registration, mutant vehicle applications, What Where When submissions, and other things that people do and create for Black Rock City.

Initially, the Burner Profile will be used as part of the pre-registration process for ticket sales to Burning Man 2013. To create your profile and pre-register for access to ticket sales, the only information you’re *required* to provide is your first name, last name, email address, mailing address and birth date. That’s it … the same info required whenever you buy Burning Man tickets.

Eventually we’ll be expanding the use of this new platform to offer additional features. So, the more information you put into your profile, the more value you’ll get out of it. Those of you involved with creating (and registering) projects for Burning Man are quite familiar with the wealth of information we collect year after year in order to process your registrations, and we want to make that whole process easier for YOU and for US by leveraging information stored in your Burner Profile.

And in the glorious vision of our future, we believe Burner Profiles will help facilitate communications around on-playa and off-playa volunteer activities, give us the ability to provide targeted communications that are pertinent to you, and offer single-sign on account management to access all of the Burning Man information systems that you work with.

Your information will be private and will not be shared — nor will it be searchable on the internet. (For more details see our Privacy Policy:http://www.burningman.com/index/privacy_policy.html)

We’ve long dreamed of having this kind of system in place in order to simplify and streamline our processes. We’re pretty certain it will make your overall Burning Man experience smoother and more enjoyable, and provide you with a nice reflection of your role in creating Burning Man culture at the same time.

Any questions you might have about the Burner Profile will be likely answered in our FAQ http://profiles.burningman.com/faq/, and if not, please use the Contact Us link on the dashboard of your Burner Profile.

Ranger Training for Vancouver Burner Events

Facebook Event Page & RSVP: https://www.facebook.com/events/534370309908895/

Hello, Vancouver Burning Man community!
With the smashing success of our Regional events for 2012, Burn In The Forest and Afterglow, we’ve decided to get the jump on training more Ranger volunteers for 2013. If you’ve ever thought of being involved asa Ranger, you should come out to one of our training workshops this coming year. The first of these will be held on Saturday, February 9th, 2013. (venue TBA)

We will cover conflict resolution, active listening, communication, rangering, and peer support. Wr
angler did a great job of explaining what we do:
“As a Ranger, you will take responsibility to ensure people are having a good time. Just walk around and check out the action. Our gift is to
mediate conflict using non-violent communication. We are an ambassador for the event and a source of information. We are the first responders and need to maintain communications within the event.”

As our events get larger and longer we need to build up our team.
For a three day event, we need at least 24-30 Rangers, for a four
day event, we would need over 40 people. That’s a lot of volunteers, and without your help we just won’t have the numbers needed to make sure everyone is safe and having a good time.

We are combining the peer support volunteers into our Ranger team so if you have these skills and interests we need you too, to join the team!

The summer is a long way off, but we all know that it gets harder and harder for people to make time for training as the date of the event draws near. Even if you aren’t sure of your summer plans yet, come on out and get some training on what it is to be a Ranger. Besides, what else are you going to be doing on a rainy February afternoon? Hope to see you there!

For more information and to sign up, you can reach me at [email protected]

Best wishes,
Ranger Andrew

  • A new way to get more of you creating art projects for Burn in the Forest! YES!
  • A new way for your friends and the community to support you by voting with their dollars? YES!
  • In-person crowd funding with an art auction, a bar, and a sweet party? YES!

Inspired by the successful art fundraiser concept used by the ‘Alchemy’ event, USA’s biggest Burning Man Official Regional event taking place in Georgia, USA, a group of local burners have decided to launch a similar tradition here in BC.

The new program is designed to allow established and novice artists alike, to present their art project to the local Burner community, and that community in turn can vote with their dollars to support the projects they wish to see come to Burn in the Forest in a form of crowd-supported fundraising format.

The fundraiser provides an opportunity for the following:

  • Artists present their ideas to the community
  • Artists and participants have a chance to connect, learn and look for ways to get involved
  • Artists get funds up front by the end of the evening to start building their creation
  • Participate in an Art Auction with lots of cool stuff to buy, with proceeds directed at the artist of your choice
  • Everyone gets to decide where their money is allocated, and each artist’s fundraising status is displayed in real time
  • Hang out, socialize, and party!

Calling all Artists!
Do you have a vision for something awesome to bring to Burn in the Forest but need to raise some funds?  We want to help you raise the minimum it will take to bring that vision to life.  All you have to do is submit a proposal to us and prepare a presentation for the art fundraiser event.
Deadline for applications is March 1st! To see the criteria for the proposal visit  http://burnintheforest.com/artist-proposals/.
Team Leads
We are looking for enthusiastic and talented people to join the Art Fundraiser Organizers team. We are particularly looking for someone to fill the following roles:

  • Communications/marketing
  • Sound Stage/DJ schedule

Breaking Wave Documentary Film Screening Gala

In less than 2 decades Burning Man has evolved from a fringe counter culture event into a global community of artists and social revolutionaries. Even as it’s marginalized and sensationalized by main stream media, it continues to grow at an exponential rate.

And A little dusty piece of this strange world is coming to Vancouver on December 11.

The Breaking Wave documentary follows the build process for a sculpture in the Black Rock  Desert, at last years Burning Man Festival. Shot over 2 weeks in the harsh desert environment, the film follows the construction of the sculpture made completely out of wood gathered from beaches all the way down the Pacific Coast, from British Columbia to California. The effort was monumental, and the challenge of finally assembling the sculpture at Burning Man only to see it go up in flames.

W2 & Connecting Circles Present: A Night of Deep Sounds, Art and Ideas
Saturday, November 17, 2012
8:00pm until 4:30am
https://www.facebook.com/events/187836324685263/

So it’s been a little while since our last show back in January. This time we are excited to be offering a fresh lineup that combines live and electronic performances by BC locals. Two floors of music will be accompanied by an art gallery, video installation and live painting on the main floor, featuring work by West Coast visual artists.

The evening will also be preceded by a panel discussion and Q&A to introduce and evolve ideas related to a new community fundraising initiative called the New Democratic Dance Party, which will be launched on December 15th. This initiative will organize dance events in order to pool community funds and resources which are then used as grants to enable local, socially conscious projects. These projects are selected by the event participants through a direct democratic process that will take place live at the venue. More details:

Black Rock Arts Foundation Letters of Intent are due December 1st!
BRAF is now accepting Letters of Interest (LOI’s) for our 2013 Grant Cycle. LOI’s are due December 1, 2012. Apply for a BRAF grant and bring interactive, participatory art experiences into your home town.

About BRAF Grants
BRAF funds highly interactive, community-driven works of art that prioritize community involvement in their development, execution and display. We fund art that is accessible to the public, civic in scope and prompts the viewer to act. We like art that can be experienced in more ways than visually – art that is touched, heard or experienced as well as viewed. We prioritize funding art that involves the audience in its conception, creation and presentation.

Does this sound like your artwork? Apply for a BRAF grant!
http://blackrockarts.org/grants

Burning Man – What’s the connection?
Our grantees create projects that are akin to the highly interactive and engaging art experienced at the annual Burning Man event. BRAF grantee projects bring like-minded interactive projects to the rest of the world. Some of our grantees employ a valuable connection with the Burning Man Regional Network, utilizing existing collaborations and established collectives to usher in new artwork into their local communities. Many of our grantees have no connection with the extended Burning Man network, but share the inspiration to spark civic engagement through interactive art.
