REMEMBRANCE PLAQUE OF NAMES OF BURNERS LOST: 2012-2013
Each year since 1996, an anonymous Burner has created a plaque to commemorate members of our community who have passed away the previous year. This tradition honors those people who have participated in creating Burning Man and affected our Burning experiences. This is a call out to you, our community, to please let us know of any Burners lost in the last year whose names you feel should be added to this year’s Remembrance Plaque.
Please send only their name, exactly as you would like to see it appear, to this address:
(**please DO NOT HIT REPLY to this newsletter to submit a name.)
Submissions must be received by July 20th to be included on this year’s plaque. Submissions after the 20th will be added to next year’s plaque.
Look for the completed plaque at the base of the Man. (Important note: the plaque is displayed at the Manbase, not the Temple, where more elaborate and personal memorials are created by participants).
May their spirits move on to the eternal playa!

BRC CENSUS – WERE YOU COUNTED?
This year we expanded our Black Rock City Census project to include data collection from a randomized sample, which was a first for us. Why, you ask? Learn more in the Burning Blog:
HARLAN GRUBER INTERVIEWED IN IGNITE.ME
Long-time Burning Man artist Harlan Gruber (known for his amazing hyper-geometric portal sculptures … http://bit.ly/11KStTR) was interviewed by a new online magazine called Ignite.me. Enjoy:
IS VANDALIZING ART ALSO ART?
An interesting conversation is developing around the perennial question of where the definition of radical self-expression starts and stops … join the dialog on the Burning Blog:

24 HOURS OF BURNING MAN — WHY THE NOSE?
Mark Day writes:
“I went to Burning Man 2012 for 24 hours. It was a last-minute decision and when I knew I was really going for ‘the day’ I tried as much as possible to leave 24 hours after I arrived, to give myself more of an ‘I have a project’ theme. I was there on Friday, which meant dealing with what I was told was the worst night time weather. I don’t recommend going for a day, but it’s more fun than not going…..while there, I made this video (the second I’ve made on-playa for the Why the Nose project):
I documented the whole 24 hour experience here:
2012 PHOTO GALLERY FROM ALES
Ales is a member of Burning Man’s official documentation team, and sure does know his way around a camera. Check out his fantastic gallery from Burning Man 2012:
CAMP UP BUILDS A CLIMBING WALL AT BURNING MAN
“In 2011, four climbers built a 14 foot tall, 26 foot wide climbing wall and brought it out to Black Rock City. We are Camp UP, and we put together a little video and article about our time at the 4:30 plaza. Shout outs to our neighbors at Rapper’s Delight and Camp Do Nothing, and a big thanks to everyone who donated money, gear, or encouragement. What a year…
HELP CREATE INSPIRING GRAPHIC DESIGN FOR BURNING MAN!
Have you always wanted to have a design considered for an official Burning Man project, but didn’t know how? Have you been dying to share your deep love of typography and clean design with the larger Burning Man community? Well, this is your big chance! We’re currently seeking contact with new designers for our design pool. So if you’re an experienced graphic designer brimming with creative, amazing ideas who is comfortable working with illustration and photograph and is also savvy in setting up files for press, get in touch with us! (If you’ve previously sent us your info you do not need to re-submit unless your portfolio has changed dramatically.) Here’s how:
– send an email to [email protected] and include a link where we can view samples of your work,
– or if your pieces aren’t online, you are also welcome to send samples to us in the mail (include a self-addressed, stamped envelope if you need your
items returned to you.) Mail can be sent to Burning Man, Attn: Design, PO Box 884688, San Francisco, CA 94188-4688
– Please indicate what types of projects you like to work on best, and what you feel are your design strengths.
We have several projects throughout the year for which we have calls for submissions, and we’d love to include you for consideration.
SHARE THE LOVE: VALENTINE CARD CRAFTING FROM HOME
You don’t need to play Cupid, just put on your best cherub smile and help us craft some Valentine’s Day Cards. On Valentine’s Day, February 14th, the Burning Man Project will join the Glide Foundation in San Francisco by helping to serve dinner to over 700 guests on this happiest of hearts day! Not only will we help serve the meal, but leading up to it, we will craft the LOVEliest valentines to give to diners.
Would You Like to Participate by Making Some Valentine Cards?
That is about 750 Valentine cards. We are going to makes some of those cards at Burning Man Headquarters, but if you do not live close enough to participate in our craft evenings, you are welcome to make some from the comfort of your home. Please contact [email protected]
GET YOUR HAM RADIO LICENSE IN JUST ONE DAY
Communication on the playa at Burning Man can be challenging. FRS radios, while cheap, have limited range and their channels get clogged. Not so with ham radio! The channels are clear and coverage out in the desert is excellent.
“But don’t you need a license for ham radio?” You do. But you can get your license in just one day — it’s easy and it costs just $15. The non-profit Black Rock Amateur Radio Association will be teaching a “ham cram” and then giving a license exam on Sunday, March 17, in San Francisco. This is the perfect opportunity to become part of a fun and interesting hobby and improve your camp’s communications situation at the same time.
[Editor’s Note: Speaking of which, Burning Man has its own email list for HAMs to coordinate their activities on playa, and for general radio related geeking. Subscribe by sending an email to: burningham-list-subscribe@
FRENCH QUARTER VOODOO SHOP SEEKING REPUTABLE READERS & PSYCHICS
Chakra Khan writes [Editor’s Note: Wouldn’t these psychics already know of the opportunity? Just sayin’.]:
“The Botanica Bodhi Manman Nan Bejeezus located in the heart of the historic French Quarter is seeking reputable and experienced qualified psyhics and readers. Readers must have a thourough working knowledge of tarot. Psyhics who do cold readings without tools please be prepared to offer a cold phone reading. Please make an inquiry to Chakra Khan with your occult/esoteric experience, knowledge and interest. The Botanika is a small intimate camp of mystics and seers. Early application is essential as space is extraordinarly limited to 13 souls, we are half full already.

BURNAL EQUINOX – SAN FRANCISCO, CA – MARCH 2
The Burnal Equinox marks the midway point between Burns, and offers an opportunity to celebrate together in the spirit of Burning Man. And so we shall, on March 2nd at Public Works in San Francisco. We’ll have more information to come, but in the meantime, here’s the Burnal Equinox 2013 event page on Facebook:

Hope to see you there! Not in San Francisco? Planning on celebrating in your own way? Let us know what you do!
=================BLACK ROCK CITY CIVICS====================
CARRY A CUP!
Veteran Burners will tell you it’s good practice to carry a cup wherever you go on playa … the ones that somehow clip to your pack or your person (or your piercing? ew.) are particularly handy, as are the military-style ones that fold down to barely nothin’. Why? We’re a gift economy, and odds are extraordinarily high that if you’re cruising Black Rock City, *somebody’s* going to offer you a drink at some point … and if you’ve got your cup in hand, you’ll be ready.
It’s also good form to not use the cups at camps you visit, leaving THEM to deal with the resulting washing-up or MOOP. People will love you for being so thoughtful, and your thirst will be handled. Win win.
(Of course, it’s the environmentally friendly way to go too, but you knew that part.)
