**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**

Here we are, as unbelievable as it seems, almost at the Burnal Equinox!  There are a couple celebrations we know about this weekend, including the San Francisco Burnal Equinox Flambe Lounge (http://bit.ly/wbnAwI) and an all-day event up in Nevada City, CA that sounds really fun (details below).  We’re sure there are others happening around the world … maybe you could create your own?  Fantastic excuse to get together with fellow Burners and would-be Burners and spark some fires, if we do say so.

We’re happy to report that Burning Man’s Art Grant review committee has been cranking away at (a record) 350+ applications for art grants this year, and they’re telling us that there are some spectacular projects that will be created for Burning Man 2012. We’re thrilled that interest in contributing creativity has grown in 2012! Are you planning to come but don’t yet know what you’ll contribute? See “Participate” below for a guide to ePlaya’s discussion threads helping to connect projects with participants.

In related news, we’ve got a great article below about a young Rhode Island School of Design student who’s working on his first Burning Man art car … and this guy sounds like he really gets it!  Honestly, it was a welcome bright spot amidst this ticket experience … when you’re in the thick of it, it can be easy to forget what Burning Man is all about, and it really helps right now to get these reminders.

Speaking of tickets, we’ve been hard at work at BMHQ, figuring out the big plans and minute details of how to best handle ticketing from here on out. We’re ready to launch the Secure Ticket Exchange Program (STEP) this week.  We’ve got your details about how it’ll work below … be sure to read it carefully and completely if you’re looking to participate in that program.  That said, we really do wish there were tickets available for everybody who wants to attend, and we are equally bummed that that’s not the case – but the work hasn’t stopped on how to solve tickets for 2012 and beyond — we thank you for continuing to provide us with ideas, feedback, support, and constructive criticism.  We truly wish you the best of luck in finding YOUR ticket to Black Rock City this year.

The Man burns in 186 days.

ROLLING OUT THE STEP SYSTEM THIS WEEK

This post is also published on the Burning Blog, and we welcome your comments and feedback there: http://bit.ly/yAmZX2

Burning Man’s Secure Ticket Exchange Program (STEP) launches this week. STEP is an online system that facilitates the safe resale of tickets that have been purchased directly from Burning Man, and is designed to provide a hassle-free, secure way of buying and selling Burning Man tickets while avoiding scammers, counterfeits and scalpers.

We’ve created a comprehensive FAQ about STEP (http://tickets2.burningman.com/faq.php) that will answer any questions you may have about the program … but we wanted to let you know how it’s going to roll out this week so you can plan accordingly. Here’s how it will go:

On Wednesday, February 29 at 12 noon PST, STEP will be opened to those who have tickets they want to sell. We’ll be emailing everybody who bought tickets through our Pre-Sale or Main Sale in the next two days, inviting you to sell your extra tickets into STEP. If you’re one of these people, watch your inbox for that email (if you don’t get an email by Thursday, visit http://tickets2.burningman.com/contact.php and select “Missing STEP email” from the drop down menu). People selling tickets into STEP will be credited the face value of the ticket and any delivery fees, but not the original service fees; Burning Man will cover the credit card merchant fees for the refund. You’ll be able to sell your tickets into STEP anytime until August 7, 2012 (if they are being held at Will Call), after which STEP will be closed.

On Friday, March 2 at 12 noon PST, we’ll open up STEP to those looking to buy tickets. Those who registered for the Pre-Sale and Main Sale but did not receive tickets will receive an invitation to join the “want tickets” queue, on a first-come first-served basis. If you are one of those people, watch your inbox for an email containing sign up information in the next two days (if you don’t get an email by Thursday, visit http://tickets2.burningman.com/contact.php and select “Missing STEP email” from the drop down menu). When you opt to turn your original Pre-Sale or Main Sale registration into a sign up for the “want tickets” list, you will be signed up as requesting the same number of tickets through STEP as you originally requested.

When a ticket becomes available through STEP, the person at the front of the queue will be sent an email giving them an opportunity to purchase the ticket(s). Tickets will be sold at face value of the original ticket, plus service ($6/ticket + $1/order) and Will Call delivery fees ($12/order). You will only be offered the next ticket(s) available; we’re not able to maintain three queues for three separate ticket price points, so you will only have the option of whatever price point comes up next in the queue. If you decline the ticket(s) or fail to purchase them within 72 hours of their becoming available, the next person in the queue will be given the opportunity to purchase them. If you decline a ticket or do not act, you will lose your place in the queue and will not be able to sign up again.

All tickets purchased through STEP will be held at Will Call for pick up and are nontransferrable; if you purchase a ticket through STEP but then decide you cannot attend the event, you can sell it back into STEP for somebody else to purchase before August 7, 2012, but you will not be able to select your buyer yourself (eg. sell to a friend) or give your STEP ticket away.

If you have any questions, please review the FAQ.

WHEN DO I RECEIVE MY PHYSICAL TICKETS?

We’ve been getting this question a lot, so we thought we’d answer it here: We’ll be sending out all physical tickets in June this year.  If you purchase tickets through the STEP system or the Low Income process,  your tickets will be held at Will Call.

For more information about tickets, visit http://tickets.burningman.com, and our FAQ:

NEW DEPARTMENT OF MUTANT VEHICLES SOUND POLICY

The BRC DMV is happy to announce the freshly minted Mutant Vehicle Sound Policy. We were grateful to receive participant feedback during the 2011 Feedback Loop regarding sound on MV’s, and have created this new policy to help guide Mutant Vehicle owners and others in creating the best experience for the greatest number of people in BRC.

If you are planning on registering a Mutant Vehicle this year, note that there will also be a few additional questions about your sound system on the questionnaire, so be ready for it!

We look forward to seeing your vehicles in Black Rock City in 2012!

RHODE ISLAND SCHOOL OF DESIGN STUDENT CREATING “PROJECT PINWHEEL” ART CAR

“Josh Shiau, a student at Rhode Island School of Design, is taking part in a project to create and display a giant sculpture using 100% recycled materials and crowdsourced art from everyday people across the world.

Project Pinwheel, Shiau said, will be used as a statement on our commitment to a sustainable future and the power of community. The sculpture – an ‘Art Car’ which will serve numerous purposes including vehicle, shelter, and art – will be on display in the Burning Man (event) in Black Rock, Nevada.

PROJECTS SEEKING PARTICIPANTS AND VICE VERSA

Trilobyte is one of our administrators/moderators on the ePlaya (http://eplaya.burningman.com), and he’s awesome.  He writes:

“I wanted to share some ePlaya links with you.  This year, a lot of camps and projects are facing some serious challenges in recruiting members to help them cover their essential needs.  In years past, we’ve had ‘artists seeking stages’ and ‘stages seeking artists’ threads to help people connect on the boards, and to help meet the challenge in 2012 I’ve created a couple new sticky threads.

Please feel free to pass those links along as you see fit.  They’re intended for camp and project leaders (or their representatives) to post listings to the community.  ePlaya has nearly 37,000 members (more than 10K of those users have joined since last summer), those ranks include a lot of good people who want to help and participate.”

APRIL CAMPOUT FOR WISCONSIN BURNERS – MANITOWOK, WI – APRIL 20-22

Russian Wulfgar, our Wisconsin Regional Contact, writes:

“The April Campout for Wisconsin Burners:  the dates are April 20-22, 2012, a two night stay – Friday night and Saturday night, leave on Sunday. Room enough for about 30 people in two cabins at Point Beach State Park. We’ll have Burning Man style campout with art, music, fire performing, building and burning and effigy, costumes, flow arts like hooping and poi spinning, and good ol’ fashioned interaction!

Start thinking about how we all can contribute to make it a really great Burning Man experience for Wisconsinites. Building of an effigy – what should it be? Fire dancing – will YOU dance with fire? Theme camps – yeah, what about theme camps?  Costumes – OHHH YEAH !!!!  Art ART ArT aRT arT let’s bring it, build it, paint it, make it, BURN IT! Music – who wants to dance I DO somebody bring music dammit! Hula hoops and poi, staff and fans, what have you, let’s teach other tricks and just mess around hitting ourselves, no formality, just fun. What else? Whatever you decide to make of it, it’s yours for the making.

OK! As we approach the Burnal Equinox (the midpoint between Burns — March 3rd … OMG?!), we’re back with more regular editions of the Jackrabbit Speaks … though this one DOES contain a quick ticket announcement, pertaining to a recent change to the Secure Ticket Exchange Program (STEP) policy we announced back on February 15th.  It’s good news, check it out.

Getting us back into the swing of things Burning Man on playa and around the world, we’ve got some cool videos to serve up, some nice writings about Burning Man from around the ‘net, some goodies you can download and enjoy (Burning Man 2011 screen saver anyone?), and some great events you might want to get on out to — including the official Burnal Equinox celebration in SF! Oh, and it’s time to register your playa project … hop on that.

This is a brief respite from ticket news though … we’re going to be coming back at you soon with some more announcements and information about ticket sales, including further details on the STEP system and more. Stay tuned.

The Man burns in 191 days!

BURNING MAN’S SECURE TICKET EXCHANGE PROGRAM (STEP) POLICY CHANGE

(This post is reprinted from the Burning Blog, where we welcome your comments: http://bit.ly/yAfCuE)

Last week we announced (http://bit.ly/ytgfxk) changes to the sales process for Burning Man 2012 tickets, including adjustments to the Secure Ticket Exchange Program (STEP). At that time we announced a policy of allowing people to purchase only one (1) non-transferable ticket per person through STEP.

However, after further consideration and much feedback from you, we’ve decided that this policy is unfair to people who originally registered for two tickets in the Main Sale, one for themselves and one for their significant other, family member, friend, or campmate.

We hear you, and we’re listening. That’s why we’re adjusting this policy to allow people who originally registered for two tickets in the Main Sale to request a maximum of two tickets per person through STEP. (If our records show that you originally registered for only one ticket in the Main Sale, you can only request one ticket through STEP.) All tickets purchased through STEP are non-transferable, and will be held at Will Call only. These tickets should be for you (or you and an identified guest).

Also, it’s important to note that STEP will have only as many tickets available as there are people who sell their tickets into it. We believe that people will also be selling/giving tickets within their immediate circle of friends and local community- and we aren’t trying to change that. It’s likely that few will find themselves holding “extra” tickets without already having a friend or camp mate in need, so we don’t anticipate STEP will have a high, regular flow of tickets; we anticipate an early influx and then a trickle as people’s plans develop, though we’d be happy to be proven wrong on this. We also know that in any typical year, there is a fair amount of summertime turnover as the event gets closer and life events cause Burners’ plans to change. We encourage you to first seek out tickets from your immediate community of friends and cohorts, as well as any other avenues for acquiring face-value, legitimate tickets as you can find, without patronizing scalpers.

If you are eligible to participate in STEP, you’ll be receiving an email at the end of February with information about how to sign up. For more information about Burning Man tickets and STEP, please see our ticket page: http://tickets.burningman.com.

“‘As close to ‘skydiving the playa’ that most of us will ever get!’

Commander Gaijin reports that the fine makers of the software that powers ‘The Burning Man Screen Saver Project’ have created a free simple experimental screensaver for both Mac and Windows using last year’s famous ESA satellite photo of Black Rock City.  The long-time burners at iScreensaver also have been updating both software and features of some of the older screensaver collections for the TBMSSP.  For those on work-computers, the Commander notes you can simply preview the screensavers from the downloaded installers without even actually installing.

BURNING MAN 2011 EXODUS – ONE HOUR NEIGHBORHOODS

Here’s a cool blog post by Christine (last name unknown) about the “one hour neighborhoods” that pop up during the height of Burning Man Exodus, made more sane and environmentally friendly by  Pulsing, which was first adopted during the 2010 event.  Good food for thought about how to maximize the pleasure of your Exodus:

Which reminds us … we’re going to be talking a lot about ingress and egress (aka Exodus) for the event this year, because yeah, making that all work is up to all of us.  Stay tuned.

TICKET UPDATE: REBUILDING BLACK ROCK CITY 2012

This message is from Marian Goodell, a Founding Board Member of Black Rock City LLC, and Burning Man’s Director of Business and Communications. She writes:

THE CHALLENGE WE FACE: DEMAND OUTSTRIPS SUPPLY

We promised we would get back to you by February 15th with our plans to resolve the ticket situation for Burning Man 2012. We all know there aren’t enough tickets for everyone who wants to participate in Black Rock City. However, it’s clear that the current situation has created holes in our social fabric. Many of the core volunteers, major interactive camps, art car projects, performance groups, and funded and unfunded art projects do not have enough tickets to bring their works to the playa. Here’s how we will remedy these challenges as fairly as we believe possible:

1. Burning Man organizers and staff will issue tickets to major theme camps and art projects using a process outlined below.
2. We will launch the STEP program on February 29th. Only those who registered and did not receive confirmation of tickets will be given access to STEP.
3. Low Income ticket applications will be accepted beginning February 29th.

There’s no way to sugarcoat this: the hard truth is that there are a lot of you who want to come to Black Rock City to celebrate your participation in the Burning Man culture this year, but not everyone will be able to attend. That sentence is about as painful to write as it is for you to read. We dearly wish we could just welcome everyone who feels drawn to Black Rock City. But, as we have explained in Andie Grace’s blog post: “Radical Inclusion, Meet the Other Nine,” (http://bit.ly/wuXalo) it’s not possible to simply increase the number of tickets available for Burning Man 2012.

And unfortunately, the random draw of the Main Sale left inordinately large numbers of our core contributors — art teams, theme camp creators, mutant vehicle builders, performers, and Burning Man volunteers — without tickets. In fact, the ratio was so unexpectedly large it has punched significant holes in Black Rock City’s artistic, civic and functional infrastructure, putting the integrity of the event itself at risk. If we let market forces play out as they could with the remaining available tickets, it’s likely that Black Rock City would be functionally untenable for many of the collaborations that comprise our desert event.

There are indications that a large percentage of people attending Burning Man this year will be first-time Burners. As eager as we are to welcome our newest citizens into our community, it’s crucially important that we have a solid foundation of veteran Burners in Black Rock City to meet, greet and acculturate these eager new participants, ensuring that they not only survive the elements but also fully participate in the Burning Man culture.

And so we find ourselves now in a very difficult situation, one where there are no perfect solutions, only tradeoffs — and inevitably, significant disappointment for those who cannot obtain tickets. We believe that it’s critical that we attend to Black Rock City’s vital functions — ensuring that theme camps can assemble, art installations can be created, mutant vehicles can safely roam the playa, performance groups have their performers, and Burning Man’s volunteer crews are staffed to provide the vital community services that make our city work. We must shore up the collaborative infrastructure of our culture.

THE SOLUTION: DIRECTED TICKET DISTRIBUTION

We have made the difficult decision to take the 10,000 tickets that were slated to be sold via the Secondary Open Sale and manually redirect them to some of the vital groups and collaborations that make up Black Rock City: volunteers, theme camps, mutant vehicles, art installations and performance groups. These groups already have a relationship and contact points within the organization. We’re in the process of proactively identifying and reaching out to the established groups that fall into each of these categories, and offering organizers access to purchase enough tickets to provide for essential crew members.

Because we know this number cannot possibly satisfy the entirety of that demand, we will use practical criteria to determine eligibility. These groups will be reviewed for:

1. History – A camp, project or participatory work must be in our database from past years. (We have ways to track name changes for groups over time.)
2. Demonstrated Community Benefit – A project has been interactive in a way that has been experienced as meaningful, provides support for Black Rock City’s infrastructure, or provides services for our community. Basically, how the project helps make the community and create its magic.
3. LNT – A group has demonstrated adherence to and good practices around Leave No Trace (www.lnt.org) and are committed to our community perpetuating the message of LNT.
4. 10 Principles – A group or project fully embraces the 10 Principles (http://bit.ly/4Natu) in their entirety.

This analysis will consider a wide variety of projects rather than favoring just one type — large camps and small ones, self-funded as well as honorarium artists, Mutant Vehicles of all shapes and sizes, and performers of all kinds. The goal is to carefully and conscientiously reconstruct the rich tapestry of our community, based on information we’ve accumulated over years of facilitating our city around these key groups.

This process is not going to be perfect … it’s not always going to feel fair. And we’re well aware that there will be still be a great many deserving people who will be left out because we don’t have the means to welcome everyone. Again, there are no foolproof solutions for these remaining tickets, only tradeoffs. But we’re confident that through this process, we’ll be able to bolster some of the social, artistic and functional infrastructure of Black Rock City. This is by far one of the most difficult decisions we’ve ever had to make, and we do not make it lightly, but after much consultation and review of your feedback, we feel this approach has the widest base of support and is the best one to assure that we can build Black Rock City in 2012.

IT’S NOT OVER UNTIL THE LAST TICKET IS SOLD

If you don’t fall into one of those categories and didn’t get a ticket in the Main Sale, you still have some hope of acquiring a ticket, and we encourage you not to give up. Although it’s bound to be more scarce than usual, there is always a brisk aftermarket for tickets leading right up to the event; people’s plans change, and tickets are sold on the secondary market every year. To assist this, we are launching the Secure Ticket Exchange Program (STEP) on February 29th to facilitate such transactions. STEP will provide a secure, hassle-free, and centralized tool for selling unused tickets or buying tickets being offered, while helping all of us avoid scammers, scalpers and counterfeiters.

People selling their tickets back via STEP will be refunded the face value of the ticket plus the delivery fee (but not the service fees $7 – as these fees cover services already rendered and are not refundable). In order to encourage the use of STEP as a central resource, Burning Man has decided to cover the $12 “restocking fee” which includes an InTicketing fee and merchant fees that the credit card companies charge to process this type of refund.

WHO: Only registrants who did not get tickets in the Main Sale will be eligible to register for tickets through STEP … if you fall into this category, you will receive an email inviting you to register. Registration will place you in a first-come first-served queue, and you will be offered a ticket when one becomes available through the system. You may only purchase one ticket through STEP; this ticket is non-transferable and can only be held at Will Call. A STEP ticket is only for you.

You will be offered a ticket at the value that the seller paid ($240, $320 or $390), plus the standard $7 per ticket service fee and a $12 Will Call delivery fee. If you’re in the front of the line, and a ticket becomes available, you will receive an email offering it to you. If you don’t respond within 72 hours, or decline the ticket, it will be made available to the next person in the queue, and you will lose your place in line. You can re-enter the queue if you wish, but your place in line will not be held.

Our ticket team will closely monitor the queue, and if/when the queue grows large beyond the reasonable likelihood for people at the end to get tickets, we’ll pause it until we determine it becomes viable again. It isn’t helpful or fair to have a lot of people waiting with no hope of getting a ticket.

It’s not required that you only buy or sell your tickets through STEP … you can still sell your tickets to your friends directly. As always, we ask that in keeping with the Burning Man ethos, tickets only be sold at or below face value (plus documented fees), or gifted.

Our Low Income Ticket Program will launch on February 29th, and will offer 4,000 tickets at $160, as was originally planned. These tickets are intended for people who can provide documented proof of financial hardship through an online application process.

More information about STEP and the Low Income Program can be found on our ticket page: http://tickets.burningman.com.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE OF BURNING MAN LOOK LIKE?

We’re obviously concerned with ticket sales for 2013 and beyond, and we’re looking at a variety of ways to ensure Burning Man’s future remains bright. Right now, everything is on the table, including many great suggestions from our community. This includes major potential overhauls of the ticket system, such as identity-based ticketing, non-transferable tickets, directed distribution ticket models, and more. This is a complex process of analysis, with lots of ramifications for internal logistics and the cultural dynamics of our community … this is far from a process of simply filling stadium seats. We are working with staff, external experts related to this field (including game theorists, sociologists, statisticians, festival producers, ticketing companies, software developers, widely-read bloggers, and more) and an advisory council made up of representative members of the community to determine what works best for Burning Man in the future.

We’re also exploring a number of options to increase the event’s capacity in the future, including ongoing negotiations with the BLM, extending the event timeframe, alternative event sites, and more. A key player in this scenario will be Burning Man’s Regional Network (http://regionals.burningman.com) and the myriad events they offer. In fact, we’ve long been aware that the event in the desert would reach its limit. It’s part of why we have nurtured the Regional Network for more than 10 years, and why we’ve created the Burning Man Project (www.burningmanproject.org), a global effort with year-round avenues to connect and support this cultural community. We expect they will play a very significant role in our future.

We’ve always been involved in proactive acculturation in order to bring in new members of our community as seamlessly as possible. In that light, we’re spearheading a number of acculturation efforts for first-timers this year. We’ve started ePlaya (http://eplaya.burningman.com) discussion threads for connecting theme camps and other projects with new participants. We plan a video podcast series, improved and updated roll-ups of first-timer resources, a web page to crowd-source the best first-timer tips our community has to offer, and we plan to engage all returning Burners in this effort.

One thing we do know is this: our understanding of “Radical Inclusion” is evolving… we will always welcome the stranger, and all are welcome to participate in the culture of Burning Man. But that doesn’t necessarily mean we can all fit in one place at one time. We’re going to have to find new ways to include those who wish to be a part of this amazing experiment.

FINALLY: THANK YOU

We are truly sorry about how this has all played out, and we want to thank you for your patience as we’ve worked through these difficult decisions … there are a lot of logistical and cultural moving parts that need to be considered, and it’s far from easy. We also want to thank you for your passion for this event and its culture, and for your suggestions and ideas about how to solve this problem … we’ve been listening to all of them.

It’s our goal to be honest, to be transparent, and to provide you updates as soon as we have solid information to offer. We’d rather it take extra time to get it right, than move too fast and get it wrong.

We hope to see you in Black Rock City this year, or in the future. And if not there, out in the world … wherever you’re manifesting Burning Man culture.

Hello, everybody.  This special edition of the Jackrabbit Speaks again brings you information on the Burning Man 2012 ticket situation.

We all know this is no matter of simple PR … we’re not interested in spinning reality into convenient fantasy here.  We’re interested in keeping Burning Man and its community intact, plain and simple, and doing so in a transparent and honest way. What Andie Grace conveys below is a reflection of the difficult collaborative work that all of us — the board, staff, volunteers, and members of our community — are doing to meet this pivotal moment in Burning Man’s history.  And it’s the next step in a series.

We would love to be able to turn on a dime on this stuff, and get 100% solid answers out to you as quickly as the reactions have been pouring in (oh yes, we’re listening), but the reality is that there are a LOT of moving parts, domino-ing process logistics, and data that we need to collect, understand and consider. We do not want to make decisions that just make matters worse — either in the short term or the long term — and each decision has enormous implications at this juncture.  We’ve been working practically non-stop on all this, but it’s far from simple, and it takes time.  So we appreciate your patience while we work through this process and move towards workable solutions.

This community just got hit by a massive dust storm, and it knocked a lot of things down … now it’s time to gather up, assess the damage, and start rebuilding together, just like we would in Black Rock City.

The Man burns in 205 days.

TICKET UPDATE: RADICAL INCLUSION, MEET THE OTHER NINE

This post by Andie Grace, Burning Man’s Communications Manager, is also available on the Burning Blog, here: http://bit.ly/wuXalo. We encourage you to share it with your friends, family and campmates, and we welcome your feedback in the blog’s comments section. She writes:

First things first:

For all the frustration, anxiety, stress, and heartache this year’s ticket lottery has caused, please accept another humble apology.

This is no time for issuing statements or putting a spin on anything. The system may have worked, but the cultural outcome sure didn’t, and even though some of you saw that coming and said so, we didn’t, and for that we are sorry.

The current trajectory is not acceptable. Even people who did get tickets aren’t cheering right now, since so many of their camps and friends are standing out in the cold. Entire groups are worried they’ll have to scrap all their plans. Burning Man is a participatory and collaborative event, and many collaborations are perilously close to falling apart.

Clearly we must reevaluate, but first we want to say more about what we’ve heard, how we got here, and what our next steps will be.

What we’re hearing:

Our office in San Francisco is awash in feedback. We have been meeting every day about tickets, and have burned the midnight oil poring over every available list and forum, logging and absorbing every email, complaint, and plea for information. We’re absolutely listening very carefully, and we are 100% clear that there’s a very big problem playing out.

What’s happening isn’t fun for anyone, and there’s no sugar coating to be put on it. Clearly, despite projections, the majority of the people who have previously built, created, contributed and participated – not just those who’ve been before, but who have created the foundations of Burning Man — don’t have a ticket to the event this year. And whether it was our naiveté or just underestimation, we didn’t see that coming at this scale, and we know it’s hurting us all now.

We understand and recognize the impact this is having – on individuals, on projects and collaborations, on your ability to plan vacation time, book plane tickets, submit applications for your camps, your art projects—everything about participating in Burning Man. We see the emotional response it’s causing – only too well, as we’re Burners at HQ too, and so are our friends, our campmates, our teammates, and our families. Watching this unfold has been painful. Each of us is responding differently – worrying, losing sleep, meeting through the evenings and weekends, throwing things, searching for answers…this is one of the most painful moments in our history.

What happens next will be pivotal – whatever is to blame, now that we’ve reached this point, we absolutely know we have to get this next moment right. We are all about to write the future of Burning Man.

Through our process of discovery and data analysis, we’ve heard from our whole community — including some experts we’ve never talked to before. In a lot of cases, we have asked for their consult; some of those helpful blogs and comments you’ve been forwarding to us have turned into meetings and phone calls, and we’re figuring out how else we can engage with a wider range of Burner minds to help guide our community through this.

How Did This Happen?

The moment in 2011 that we saw tickets were going to sell out, we knew it would have a major impact on 2012 ticket sales, and we started planning. As we analyzed how to build this year’s process, we projected possible scenarios. Some of us thought we would see a sell out on the very first day of ticket sales. Most thought it would take longer (after all, last year’s tickets sold out in July). Few could predict exactly how many new prospective attendees would register, though we had plenty of indication that public interest was greater than ever – especially since we sold out last year, but also in the rise of social media and visibility for Burning Man. In any case we knew we were in for a different kind of ride in 2012.

A first-come first-served system would not meet the demand either. Every ticket vendor informed us we’d have to use the same type of “queuing system” that meant hours waiting in line at your computer screen – a luxury perhaps not available to many perfectly deserving Burners. And since we did estimate that demand would exceed supply somewhat, we knew that when people rushed in to grab the tickets available, there would be someone left out in the cold – not everyone was going to get tickets who wanted them.

By spreading the registration process over a period of time, and making random selection a stated goal of the design, we aimed for a more sane way to access what would be basically the same “odds” at tickets. We’d diffuse a few hours of frustration (middle of the night for some Burners, middle of the workday for plenty of others) into a more moderate, less angst-ridden experience, but get the same kind of results.

We felt it was culturally important to retain the different price points in that scenario, to make a wider range of ticket prices available for people of different means. Our desire was to distribute that access in a manner that gave people some control over how much they were willing to spend.

While the system was not primarily designed to prevent scalping, there were certain deterrents to it in place. No event organizer or ticket seller has solved scalping completely. Some of the measures they’ve implemented to ameliorate it, unfortunately also prohibit certain things we still value about our culture, especially the practice of gifting tickets. Many a great Burner had their first experience after getting talked into it at the last minute by a friend, and plenty of us have given, swapped, or received a ticket late in the season when plans began to change. A two-week registration window to request tickets would still let us do more crosschecks to weed out the speculators and scalpers.

And in those regards, the ticket selection system worked as planned — but it created other unforeseen problems, and most of them boil down to an unpredicted, overwhelming level of demand. The impact of that demand is beyond what we projected when designing the system; even if we knew there were destined to be some people missing out, we didn’t expect nearly so many.

The Numbers:

Let’s break it down and just talk numbers: we had nearly three times the number of tickets requested than we had available tickets. We did conduct a survey before purchase, and while surveys are not perfect, they do give some interesting data. In that survey, about 40% of ticket buyers said they had never been to the event before, which is a higher number than we’ve seen in previous years. It does appear — and I’d caution we don’t know everything yet — that there was a fair amount of over-registration – those who said “I need one but I’ll order two…” or “I’m not sure I’m going but I’ll get one just in case.”

We can now see that some of that happened simply because the perception of scarcity drove fear and action for all of us. It could be said we were quite naïve to think we had much control over a basic emotional response to scarcity. Game theory won out over good wishes.

But that’s not all that happened. In fact, there were plenty of ‘perfect storm’ influences afoot: 2011 had perfect weather, awesome art, and record attendance and visibility in the press. The ticket sell-out made headlines around the world. Social media use is higher than ever, so participants who had such a great time were more active than ever telling everyone all about it. One such participant shared a magical YouTube video he created in 2011 (“Oh The Places You’ll Go!”) – the link hit the Huffington Post in January and went viral, eventually hitting 1.3 million views from all around the world; its visibility peaked right around the day that ticket registration opened. And, thinking we wanted to ensure a fair shake at the new system for Burners, we decided to leave registration open for two full weeks, just to be sure that any of you who were out on vacation or away from your computers for the announcement had plenty of time to get a fair shot.

A perfect storm.

The Big Picture:

The overarching fact we must face now: awareness of Burning Man has reached the world at large. It has tipped into the mass consciousness and drawn exponential levels of new interest. Thanks in part to thousands of enthusiastic storytellers from throughout Burning Man’s history, the number of people who want to burn now exceeds the current capacity of the city in the desert.

This was a possibility at every point in our history, of course, but the speed and scale were surprising. We were not blind to this possible outcome, but we did not anticipate an increase in demand that would so dramatically exceed all precedent.

Our friends in the days when Burning Man was much smaller worried what it would be like when ten thousand people showed up on the playa. In 2012, we’re faced with figuring out how we can address the Principle of Radical Inclusion now that the unthinkable has come true: millions of people have heard of Burning Man, and a whole bunch of them want to come. Although Radical Inclusion states “We welcome and respect the stranger. No prerequisites exist for participation in our community,” that doesn’t mean that every one of us fits in the same place at once.

While we’d all like to blame some mysterious “Other” at this point – while we’re all offended by the concept of scalpers profiting off tickets our friends should have gotten – there is no clear evidence that scalpers are holding all of these tickets. Sure, they’re out there. And there are returning Burners who are right now sitting on an extra ticket, afraid to speak up and start a stampede among campmates, or quietly redistributing those tickets among friends or other strong ties.

But what’s appearing more and more likely is this: we’re about to meet a lot of newly-minted, first-time Burners. (And hi, new friends. Kindly step up to the mic and say hello in the comments section of the blog – we’re thrilled to welcome you, really, and would love to hear from you. You’ve arrived at a very interesting time, can you tell?)

And that’s fantastic. New energy and enthusiasm is the lifeblood of Burning Man, and we were all new here once (well, except for Larry Harvey). We love newcomers.

However, if new Burners are the lifeblood, the existing community of collaborators, projects, and creativity is the corpus of Burning Man. And now we’ve learned after a few days of polling and information gathering that many of the largest groups and projects (mutant vehicles, theme camps, volunteer groups, and other collaborations) planning to attend this year have secured only 25%-30%, on average, of the tickets they needed to commit to their projects. Even calculating that many tickets would eventually become available via the secondary market, the timing of that possible influx comes too late. These groups are telling us “This might be the year we skip Burning Man.” Plenty of significant groups have already moved forward with making alternate plans.

At an individual, person-by-person scale, such a turnover might be acceptable — if this was a concert or a sports event. But you’re not just fans in a seat, all more or less the same. In a collaborative culture, in a community based on a web of social relationships, these numbers are perilous. And while it remains true that no prerequisites exist to be a part of our community, we cannot and will not let overwhelming interest tear apart the social fabric that is critical to our culture.

What We Can’t Change:

Two things are immutable:

1. It is not possible to simply grow the event to welcome more people in 2012. Between traffic concerns and the limitations placed on attendance by the Bureau of Land Management, that’s off the table.

2. Without our core collaborative community, the fabric of Burning Man could fray and tear apart. Regardless of all good original intentions, that ripping sound has to stop.

We very, very much want and need to welcome new people to Burning Man. New creative energy and enthusiasm also help make it what it is, and newcomer experiences can be some of the most transformative. We continue to welcome the stranger. But we can’t work so hard to welcome new Burners to BRC that it comes at the expense of those who have and will make the event what it has been. Radical Inclusion is the first principle, but faced with a Burning Man event that is limited in population, Civic Responsibility and Communal Effort dictate that we endeavor to radically include those who create Burning Man in the first place. There are, after all, Ten Principles, not just the one.

What We Can Do:

So, what now? Let’s start with what we know for sure:

* We can’t and won’t reverse the Main Sale drawing results. That part is done, and there is nothing fair about taking awarded tickets away from anyone…it solves nothing at this point, and changes the terms after the sale has already happened, and probably isn’t even legal. Besides, that only makes a bad situation worse.
* We must now attend to preserving the fabric of our culture.
* There are listings on ticket scalping sites, but right now, they don’t all equal tickets that will be sold above face value. None of those sellers are actually holding tickets yet, and won’t be for several months, and we will collaborate to do what we can to starve them out. There are right now only about a hundred such tickets on those sites, although that doesn’t mean there are not more tickets that were awarded to people who plan to scalp them eventually.
* The STEP program will launch this month and we believe it will help. Those who were not selected to purchase tickets in the Main Sale round will be notified privately of how to register, and given the first option to sign up for the “Want Tickets” waiting list in advance of any other users.
* Right now we are contacting representation from all the types of affected groups analyze the overall shortfall and figure out the scope of the problem and what options exist for us. We’re also consulting with Burners of every possible stripe and trying to increase our brain trust to help make sure we don’t miss any signs as we find our way out of this storm.
* Our Regional Network and other teams including many community advisers are engaging around what to do about the issue of acculturating new visitors to Black Rock City this year.
* We’re clear that next year, big changes are necessary to address scarcity, capacity and community.
* We have agreed to be as transparent and honest as we can, describing next steps and decisions as quickly as we are able to make them. We are really considering a vast array of options as we continue to absorb information and analyze data.

We’re working non-stop to understand what happened. We’re checking in with theme camps and art groups. We’re talking to volunteer teams and regional coordinators, performers, mutant vehicle crews … all the smaller sub-communities that make up Burning Man. We’re gathering information on who placed orders for tickets, who received them, and, if they have a surplus, how they intend to resell them.

We are meeting constantly with Burners right now. We’re reading what people are writing and inviting many of those voices to come meet us, call us, and help us sort this out. You are going to be a big part of that solution. Please continue to email, write, call, tweet, and post your ideas and suggestions. Please check in with your own community to see what tickets might be available.

Meanwhile, please know that everything we’re working on here in San Francisco is guided by the desire to find the best possible way for our community to come together again on the playa. We’ll continue to communicate as we have information available. We expect to present a detailed plan on February 15th.

BURNING MAN ADDRESSES 2012 TICKET SITUATION

(This message comes to you from Marian Goodell, a Founding Board Member of Black Rock City LLC, and Burning Man’s Director of Business and Communications.)

Participants, friends, Burners, community:

The Burning Man organization recognizes that the ticket registration and random drawing process has caused many participants frustration and concern over whether they can attend the event this year.

A team of Burning Man staff and organizers, who have been working on the ticketing process since August 2011, met Thursday to review what happened and what can be done moving forward.

The organization is looking at short term fixes and long term solutions to improve the ticketing process to make it work as well as possible for as many people as possible.

Following phone conversations with major theme camp and art group organizers, we determined that only 20%-25% of the key people needed to bring those projects to the playa had received notifications for tickets. A number of people also told us they’d used multiple credit cards and asked friends to register for them as a way to increase their chances of getting tickets. Those who received more tickets than they need said they are considering how to redistribute them.

We believe we need two weeks to let the dust settle to see how much redistribution happens. Even with that redistribution we know that key people and projects may not get confirmations in time to move forward with their plans. We are looking at options to keep that from happening.

Burning Man’s most important priority is to make sure the community stays intact in the face of the current challenges. Combining what we learned from the phone conversations and what we’ve heard from the Burner community, we’ve come up with some ideas to address the short term issues. We will continue to gather information and listen to your feedback as we work towards announcing our plans within two weeks.

In the meantime we urge our community not to buy from scalpers or from large resale sites. We will have the Secure Ticket Exchange Program (STEP) activated on February 22. This is the most secure and hassle free way to enter the re-sale system. Please use it.

Those registrants who received rejection letters should keep an eye on your email as information about STEP and any other options will be made to you first.

Not everyone who wants a ticket this year will get one, that is clear — the demand clearly exceeds supply. But we are going to do everything we can in the coming days to ensure that we preserve and respect the community that supports and creates this event both in the short term and long term.

We will be reaching out to you and working with you to make that happen. We recognize that we have work to do to repair the faith in the organization. We are very sorry for the frustration, anxiety and deep disappointment this year’s ticketing experience has caused for so many citizens of Black Rock City.

Sincerely,

All of us here at the Burning Man Organization

YES! The theme is here!

But first (it’s important!): The registration period for the Burning Man 2012 ticket Main Sale wrapped up last Sunday night, and our ticket vendor is currently de-duping and cleaning up the registrant database (including removing known scammers), before we do the drawing for the three pricing tiers on January 31 and February 1.

And guess what?  Turns out, people are VERY EAGER to go to Burning Man this year.  So much so, in fact, that they found creative ways to increase their odds of getting tickets in the Main Sale.  As a result, there are a lot more tickets being requested than there are tickets available — an inordinately large number, in fact, and far more than we projected even after last year’s sold-out event. It seems that people a) likely got their friends, family and campmates to order tickets as well, and/or b) requested more tickets than they actually need.

So the unfortunate net result is that there will be a lot of people who aren’t awarded tickets from the Main Sale … BUT DO NOT FEAR!! Because this means that there will be a large number of tickets in circulation within the existing community, tickets that simply need to be redistributed to those who need them.  And we have information about how we’re going to help you all do that, while thwarting scammers and scalpers, below.

It’s up to all of us to decide how this all plays out … we can work together in our communities to ensure that most everybody who wants a ticket to Burning Man can get one, and avoid falling prey to third-party price gouging.  Just as we’re able to create the world’s largest Leave No Trace event — against all odds, in the middle of the remote desert — we can see this challenge through together as well. Read on to learn how we can make this happen.

The Man burns in 218 days, and we expect to see YOU there.

BURNING MAN 2012 ART THEME: FERTILITY 2.0

Burning Man’s art theme for 2012 will be Fertility 2.0, wherein we contemplate the tendency of any being or living system to create abundant life.

THE LATEST BURNING MAN TICKET INFORMATION

Here’s the latest on the Main Sale for tickets to Burning Man 2012, which will be wrapped up by February 1 …

It is clear that many people seeking Burning Man tickets for 2012 padded their odds by requesting more tickets than they need, and having friends, family and campmates ALSO register, ALSO requesting more tickets than they need.  There are an unexpectedly high number of registrants, and they are requesting 1.7 tickets/person on average.

As a result, a significant number of people will not be awarded tickets in the Main Sale.

And while it may seem at first blush that there’s a shortage of tickets available, the reality is that there are now a lot of tickets held by our community that will now simply be redistributed to those who need them. Based on analysis we hold a strong belief that things will settle out over the course of time, once that redistribution takes place, such that most everybody who wants a ticket will find their way to one.

In order to facilitate the redistribution of those extra tickets now in circulation, we have set up the Secure Ticket Exchange Program (STEP).  The STEP is a web-based system that will allow Burners to sell their unneeded tickets, and Burners wanting tickets to access them.  This will allow for safe and secure transactions in a central place for community-monitored, face-value resales.

We would like to reinforce that we all share responsibility for preventing the scalping of Burning Man tickets. Burners can commit to only selling their tickets at face value, and to never buying tickets above face value. Friends don’t let friends buy from scalpers! We can work together by using STEP, keeping a vigilant eye out for scams and inflated-price vending, and reporting known scammers on our ePlaya ticketing thread, here:

http://eplaya.burningman.com/viewforum.php?f=290

As always, you can find full information about Burning Man tickets on our ticket page:

http://tickets.burningman.com

… and there’s more about it here on the Burning Blog:

http://bit.ly/z7oHsg

Burning Man actively discourages the use of secondary resources (eBay, Craigslist, StubHub, etc.) for the resale of tickets, and we encourage those who do not obtain tickets from the Main Sale/Open Sale to utilize community-centric sources to keep a handle on this process together. Please use STEP and/or direct local connections to known Burners to find the tickets you seek. We will post information on how to access STEP next week.

BRC DEPARTMENT OF MOBILITY IS HERE FOR MOBILITY-IMPAIRED BURNERS!

Dani writes:

“Just wanted to let our community know that there is a camp for your mobility-impaired Burners.

I’m The Rat Lady and I am finally home! I know I thought for 15 years that I could never go to Burning Man.  I use a wheelchair, don’t have access to a generator and thought when it came to Burning Man, it is just too big, too dusty, to hard without a Cabana Boy (& I know I can’t afford one of those!). Well, I discovered last year that it IS possible for me to go to the Burn!!

The Black Rock City Department of Mobility Camp is a Theme camp dedicated to gifting mobility services to our mobility-impaired Burners. It’s by no means a luxury Camp, we are still dusty, many of our members bring small tents to do their camping, it’s still hot and cold, but we do make it possible!

We are on an electric grid, important if you need to recharge a mobility scooter, wheelchair/powerchair, oxygen concentrator, c-pap machine etc., Our camp is wheelchair friendly, all of our paths are designed with chairs and golf carts in mind. Our Sun Shower rig is wheelchair accessible by a ramp. Our kitchen area is wheelchair friendly as well.

For the city at large, we take out our fleet of mutated vehicles that can hold up to 14 at a time, with up to 5 wheelchairs, 4 times a day for deep playa art tours, so that the mobility impaired among us still have access to the Temple, The Man and the ART! We also shuttle out to the two main burns and some smaller burns as well.

This year we would like to expand into “Short Bus” service along “D” street from the 3 and 9 o’clock plazas to the three Arctic Ices, the three medicals, post office, Playa Info, The Man and our Camp in center camp. For those wheelies that are camping with others, you might want to position yourself near “D” Street.

We currently have room in our Camp for 25+ Burners in wheelchairs and 15 with mobility scooters and we can always welcome some able bodies too. Everyone is expected to do as much as they are able to contribute to our mission.

Please share this information with your friends and Camp members so that they can share it with their friends who always thought they could never come! Or with those able bodies who have a driving desire to make things inclusive for all! We would welcome both! Camp dues go toward in camp services, with anything left over going toward our Community Services for all, including those temporarily impaired.

We are also seeking financial donations toward our goals of the “Short Bus Line” and infrastructure, for the “Short Bus Line” others with Art Cars to expand our community services. If your Camp would like to help get the Line going please contact us.

If you would like to do a fund raiser to help toward the “Short Bus Line” , or bring your own “Short Bus”/Art Car, or help us in any way, we would welcome anything most gratefully.

If any of you have an Art Car with wheelchair access, we would love to have you camp with us or if it’s a very large Art car, coordinate with us to stop by our Camp, so that the mobility impaired can ride.

Our Website is http://BlackRockCityMobility.org It is still being added to, but can give a lot of info right now.
Feel free to contact us at [email protected] with any questions or to apply to join our camp! Please no Spam!

THE FIRST UNOFFICIAL BORDER BURNERS “ORPHAN BURN”

Here’s a great story we’d like to pass along from the Burning Blog … as our global community has grown, we’ve heard about more and more “Orphan Burns”, where Burners who can’t make it to the playa for Burning Man get together to celebrate on Burn night.  Here’s one that happened in El Paso last year:

IS BURNING MAN A “WHITE PEOPLE THING”?

Caveat explores an interesting socio-cultural question around Burning Man …

“A close friend of mine was asking me about Burning Man.  She’s a black woman from Brooklyn. ‘Nope,’ she said eventually, with some frustration.  ‘I don’t think I’ll be going to Burning Man!’

‘Why not?’ I asked.  She should.  She’s magnificent.

‘It’s a white people thing!’

Whoa.  I asked her to tell me more about that.”

AROMATHERAPY ENTHUSIASTS: JOIN IN THE AROMATHERA POTTY PROJECT

Tracey writes:

“Burners have said that there’s no sense of smell on the Playa.
Yet visitors to the porta potties testify otherwise.
I am Tracey of Lamay Camp, Kidsville and last year I ‘found my Gift’.

I had brought some essential oils and essential oil blends I created to the Playa to scent my tent for hypnotherapy experience sessions. Finding my visit to our local porta potties less than inspirational, I scented every third porta potty with a blend and put a sign up on the outside of the door indicating the blend and its all-botanical ingredients. When I returned a few hours later to check on the scented porta potties, I found line ups for them! Soon, the Aromathara Potties were the talk of Kidsville. One person even said that it was the highlight of his Burn! So I started to think: What if Aromathera Potties appeared all over Black Rock City? What if aromatherapy enthusiasts shared their gifts at their local porta potties throughout the Burn?

So here’s the deal with the Aromathera Potty Project:
1. Contact me so we can get on the same page and so that I can get an overview of the spread of the Project.

2. Select/collect/create a handful of blends or singles (I suggest 30ml of each) to scent your local porta potties with. Here are the “Anarres Emo Oils” I used:http://www.anarreshealth.ca/catalog/3/essential_oils?page=3 I suggest every third or fourth porta potty to make the job manageable for you and to ensure that scent averse folks have a choice not to use an Aromathera Potty.

3. Create non moopy signs to post on the Aromatherapy Potties. Bring 2 per blend in case one goes missing. Be sure that the signs state boldly ‘Aromathera Potty Project’, name the blend in a fun but accurately evocative way (‘Furry Forest’ rather than ‘Fun Fur’ for an evergreen blend) and list all of the ingredients with the common and latin botanical names so that we don’t endanger anyone with allergies to specific botanicals. NO SYNTHETIC SCENTS OR PERFUMES, PLEASE AS THESE ARE ALLERGENIC AND NOT NATURAL AND NOT AROMATHERAPEUTIC ETC.

4. Once on the playa, implement your Aromathera Potty Project at your local porta potties! Visit every 4 hours or so, tidy your porta potty and flick drops of essential oil goodness on the walls. It only takes a few minutes and you’re done!

5. Marvel at the line ups at ‘your’ scented Aromathera Potties! Bask in praise, directed and overheard! Rejoice in the gift you are bringing to the Playa Experience!

FORUMS FOR REGISTERING THEME CAMPS –  SF, CA (+WORLDWIDE) – FEB 15, MAR 24

We are hosting an important offerings of forums – the first ones ever held for Burning Man Theme Camps!

The first forum is scheduled for Wednesday, February 15th, 6-9 PM Pacific Time. That’s the date that the 2012 Placement questionnaire goes live. At least one subsequent forum – covering the same topics – will be Saturday in March 24th, 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM, Pacific Time, to accommodate east coast and international time zones participants. The Placement questionnaire closes April 26th.

Our event is growing, and with that growth comes challenges for both the Burning Man organization and you. Our departmental leadership group and the Placement team have considered what topics would benefit the most from a dialog with you, with the goal of better setting expectations, and making things easier and more successful on the playa.

Topics to be presented to assist your success as a theme camp producer will include:

o       Tips for successful filing of the Placement questionnaire
o       How to get through Gate with ease: early arrivals, carpools, deliveries, & “outside services”
o       Ensuring a safe space for your visitors
o       Acculturating outside services for ‘plug & play’ camps
o       Heavy construction equipment: self-sufficiency, sharing with other camps
o       Meeting Health Department compliance
o       How to successfully de-MOOP and leave no trace: @ BRC and in surrounding communities

We hope you can join us in person at BMHQ in San Francisco (limited seating), or via webcast and phone. RSVP Call-in and web-in information to follow:

We are using last year’s placement camps list to invite camps to these forums. Please contact [email protected] if you are a new or returning
camp that wasn’t on the playa in 2011.

Thank you!

– 2012 Placement team

FROSTBURN REGIONAL EVENT – PITTSBURGH, PA – FEB 17-20

Frostburn (http://frostburnpgh.com/index.html) takes place 50 miles north of Pittsburgh, PA over Presidents’ day weekend: February 17-20th 2012. Online ticket sales are open until Feb. 13.

When a group of Pittsburgh Burners thought to themselves: “What makes Burning Man special?” the answer was resounding: harsh conditions, amazing art, good people. And what harsh conditions were available? Winter, of course…cold, snowy, Pittsburgh winter. And thus “Frostburn” was born.

Imagine the climatic opposite of Burning Man: a frozen forest where ice and snow join fire and steam as mediums… where sharing warmth is not just a figure of speech, but a necessity. Where radical self-reliance and communal effort are critical for human survival…

Hey all!

If you think about it, Burning Man can credit its phenomenal growth to our culture of communication — people engaging with others inside and outside of our community, sharing the transformational experience that is Burning Man, and spreading our ethos, one story at a time. Communication is our lifeblood.

Here in the Burning Man Communications Department, we’re largely self-taught when it comes to PR and media relations.  And you know how it’s all well and good to do some light plumbing work around the house, but sometimes you need to bring in a pro with a serious toolbox and the know-how to use it?  That’s where we find ourselves as our culture grows … we’re ready to bring on a seasoned professional PR Manager with a solid set of tools and a track record of putting them to good use.

This person will replace and build on the role of Burning Man’s long-time Communications Manager, the irreplaceable Andie Grace, who will be moving into a new role within the Burning Man Project, Burning Man’s new non-profit venture (www.burningmanproject.org).

As Burning Man culture starts to really permeate the global culture, it’s to our benefit to be more proactive about forging relationships, and making sure the right messages are getting to the right places, so that the culture (and its potential) is being represented properly (we all know the risk of a global media all too eager to simply portray its titillating aspects, rather than what’s REALLY going on). Makes sense, right? Right.

Sound like this is up your alley?  Great!  Learn more about the position and how to apply below.  And please — we beg of you — please apply through the method described below, and avoid back channels or hitting up our folks trying to look for an angle … we’re only accepting resumes through the process we’ve established. Really.

OK folks … hop to it … read on … the Man burns in 231 days!

REMEMBRANCE PLAQUE OF NAMES – 2011-2012 BURNERS LOST

Since 1996, an anonymous Burner has created a plaque to commemorate members of our community who have passed away the previous year. This tradition continues to honor those people who have affected our Burning experiences and who participated in creating Burning Man. This is a call out to you, our community, to please let us know of any Burners lost in the last year whose names you feel should be added to this year’s Remembrance Plaque.

Please send only their name, exactly as you would like to see it appear, to this address:

[email protected]

(**please DO NOT HIT REPLY to this newsletter to submit a name.)

Submissions must be received by July 20th to be included on this year’s plaque. Submissions after the 20th will be added to next year’s plaque.

Look for the completed plaque at the base of the Man. (Important note: the plaque is displayed at the Manbase, not the Temple, where more elaborate and personal memorials are created by participants).

May their spirits move on to the eternal playa!

Here’s hoping you survived the holidays in fine style this year, and came out relatively unscathed! Happy (other) new year!

The big news of course is that the registration period for the Burning Man tickets Main Sale starts this coming Monday! Registration is open for two weeks until January 22nd. All you have to do is go to http://tickets.burningman.com at your leisure during that two week period and register.

During this phase, 40,000 ticket purchases will be awarded by a random selection process, which will run when registration closes. We’ve got full details below, and on the Tickets page —  make sure you (and your Burner friends) read up on the details so you know what to expect!

And as you register, we appreciate your filling out a short survey we’ve included in the process; the information collected will contribute to greater understanding of our community and how to accommodate the widest range of needs during ticket sales– both this year, and in the future. So thanks!

The Main Sale will be followed up by the Open Sale in March. No registration is required during that phase – we’ll offer the remaining 10,000 tickets (and any that are unclaimed during the Main Sale) on a first-come, first-served basis (limit 4 per person) — while supplies last. Remember, no tickets will be sold at the gates or at outlets this year, and physical tickets won’t be mailed out until early summer. Deep breaths, we’re almost there!

In other news, the Burning Man Art Grant application process is now open too — if you’ve ever dreamed of a grant to build your artistic vision on the playa, your time has come to take the plunge! We’ve got info on how to apply, below. Plus a flame effects class in Hawaii (goosebumps! How cool!), several creative projects seeking contributors, and a high energy 6 minute video to stoke your winter flames.

The Man burns in 237 days.

P.S. Yes…we know only too well that you want the theme text for Burning Man 2012. Your friendly Jack Rabbits are on pins and needles too! On the way soon.

BURNING MAN TICKET MAIN SALE: REGISTRATION PERIOD STARTS MONDAY

The registration period for the Burning Man ticket Main Sale starts Monday January 9th (at 12 noon PST) and is open through January 22nd (at 11:59pm PST).

Here’s how it works:

APPLY FOR A BURNING MAN ART GRANT

If you’re interested in applying for a grant to create artwork for exhibition at Burning Man 2012, the Art Grant Application PDF is live, and posted. Find it here:

http://www.burningman.com/installations/submit_grant.html

We also did a bit of a tweak to the Art Grant FAQs, to answer even more questions:

http://www.burningman.com/installations/art_grants.html

Something new for the program this year — we are going to select the Cafe Portal art piece during Art Grant reviews. Here is some info on the Cafe Portal:

The Front Portal is the entrance Art for the Center Camp Café, a welcoming installation located in the middle of Black Rock City. The Front Portal does not have to be an actual arch or portal, though many have been created. It is the art installed near the ‘front entrance’ to the Center Camp Café structure as the Cafe faces The Man.  In some years, this has resembled a type of ‘arch’ or portal. Here are some specific guidelines for the structure — it’s possible that a successful piece may fall slightly outside these guidelines, but there should be a strong reason why:

Height: 12 ft minimum.  30 ft maximum
Width: 12 ft min, 30 ft max
Depth: 8 ft min x 20 max
Inside of arch 8’ wide and 8’ high at minimum.
Keep in mind that this needs to be visible both day and night.
As with all honorarium pieces, the Cafe Portal installation needs to be fully set up by noon the Sunday before the event.

Read up, settle in and tell us about your vision for playa art in 2012!

HAVE YOU VOLUNTEERED FOR BURNING MAN? PLEASE FILL OUT THIS SURVEY

Termeh passes this on …

“Dear Burning Man Crew,

What an amazing year we have had.  So many positive changes and the largest event with the best weather ever.  How can we do it better? Please let us know!

Last year the Volunteer Squadron created a survey specifically for volunteers.  It provided great information that helped improve processes, shape better communication, appreciation, training materials, and in some cases let us know what we are doing right!  One of the things that made it particularly helpful was that a very large percentage of people filled it out.  We are hoping for the same response rate or better for this year.

Please fill out the new survey…you have a couple of weeks to make it happen!  This survey closes on January 15th.  Pick a time when you can reflect and really tell us how you feel.  Your input will be anonymous and will be distributed to any department that it will affect. Here’s the survey:

http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/WEB22DWUAZ9DBL

Also, feel free to forward to anyone you know who has volunteered for Burning Man.

Thank you!

Harley and the Volunteer Squadron”

TUNA GUY JIM PETERSON PASSES AWAY

We’re sad to report the news that long-time Burner Captain Jim Peterson, one of the main organizers of “The Tuna Guys” camp that blessed Burners with gifts of fresh tuna on playa, passed away when his fishing boat capsized off the coast of Oregon. The Tuna Guys are an iconic playa legend, part of the fabric of Black Rock City, and an enduring icon of Gifting at its best. Our thoughts are with Captain Jim’s family and friends.

Here’s a news article about the tragedy from local news site KMTR.com: http://bit.ly/zzeCau

FUNDRAISING FOR ART PROJECTS WORKSHOP

On December 13, 2011, the Burning Man Special Events Team hosted a free workshop about fundraising for art projects.  We’re happy to say that it was well-attended, both in house at Burning Man HQ and online via live webcast.

We recorded the audio from the workshop and uploaded the accompanying PowerPoint presentation so those of you who couldn’t attend can still benefit from the information presented. Here you go:

DISTRIKT ART GRANT

Piper writes:

“Did you know we are currently accepting grant proposals for our very first DISTRIKT art grant?  Due to the busy holiday season, we have extended the due date of the initial letters of inquiry by one week to January 8th, 2012.

We will provide up to $5000 for one or more art installations to be showcased at DISTRIKT during Burning Man 2012. The art should blend and interact with DISTRIKT (i.e.- extremely fragile nighttime-oriented installations won’t make sense at a crowded and energetic camp operating during the day.) Other than that, the sky’s the limit!

As with grants from BRAF or Burning Man itself, this is not a commission — the art is yours to keep. We simply provide funding and a venue within which to showcase your creation. Though we’d love to have you, camping with or becoming a member of DISTRIKT isn’t a requirement.

If you’re interested and feel your installation would be a good fit at DISTRIKT, please follow the following instructions.      Timeline/Process:
• Email Letter of Inquiry (LOI) to [email protected] no later than January 8th, 2012.
• The LOI should include the following information
• Name of artist or collective
• Name phone number, email address, and mailing address of contact person
• Name of project or program
• Amount requested up to $5000
• Brief description of project, and how it fits the ethos of DISTRIKT (400 words or less)
• Attachment or link to images or conceptual drawings
• Invitations for proposals, along with further instructions, will be extended no later than January 15th, 2012.
• Proposals are accepted by invitation only, and are due February 17th, 2012
• Selected grantees are notified March 1st, 2012
• Initial funding released to new grantees by March 15th, 2012

As with any new process, no doubt there will be questions, please feel free to email us [email protected] and we will do our best to respond quickly.

We’re thrilled to take this step forward, to evolve, and mature & to give back at a new level.

–Please offer writing in the spirit of Burning Man (see the 10 Principles at http://www.burningman.com/whatisburningman/about_burningman/principles.html)
–Writing is requested in English or in foreign languages with an English translation (we hope at least someone will think to offer a foreign language story with an untrustworthy translation)

KEROSENE Krew is excited about the fertile possibilities of this project.  We’re eagerly looking forward to receiving your offerings.  Thanks!”

HELP SUPPORT WICHI/H20 – A BURNERS WITHOUT BORDERS PROJECT

Leigh writes:

“My project Wichi/H20 which is part of Cloudhead Art Organization received funding from Burners Without Borders this last July.

We take donated digital cameras and put them in the hands of indigenous Wichi children in a small village in NW Argentina. Then we sell the best of the photos they take, and all profits go to develop a community garden and bring clean water to the children and their families. We just launched an Artslant sales site for our photos:http://bit.ly/zJ8rKK

Here’s the link to a description of Wichi/H20: http://cloudhead.org/projects/wichih20/

Anyone who wants updates of what’s going on with this project and others can find us on Facebook at http://facebook.com/cloudheadART or Twitter:http://twitter.com/CloudheadART, and our website: http://cloudhead.org.

I can always be reached at [email protected] or [email protected].

Thanks so much!

SUPPORT A FULL-LENGTH DOCUMENTARY ABOUT THE OTIC OASIS PROJECT

Melissa (aka “Syn”) writes:

“Daniela Ardizzone, a filmmaker based in LA, documented the build at Burning Man, and her goal is to complete a full length documentary on the Otic Oasis.  She just launched a fundraising page at IndieGoGo, to help her complete the film. There you will see a 4 minute teaser that captures the spirit of the Otic Oasis as well as all community based, volunteer dependent, inclusive and interactive art that you are all an integral part of creating.  It’s worth a visit to her IndieGoGo page just to view the trailer:

And obviously, donations to her efforts will help make this film a reality.

Thanks again for your interest and participation in the Otic Oasis project.”

FLAME EFFECTS FOR THE ARTIST – NORTH SHORE OAHU, HI – FEB 11 & 12

Hawaii is ablaze …

The Flame Effects for Artist class will be coming to the island of Oahu, Hawaii February 11th and 12th with a great workshop for those who wish to incorporate fire aspects into their art!

Ka Pilina Interactive Arts Society will present this great 2-day workshop in flame effects with the artist in mind.

The workshop will be for those from the mainland to come to and enjoy the islands as well as for those who are already working and based in the Pacific Rim area. Artists will be able to share there love of the fire arts in this bountiful tropical setting while taking in detailed useful information and ideas

The workshop will be teaching basic practices and principles for incorporating fuel based flame effects into your artistic projects and artwork. This class is great for the beginning fire artist and always has something new for the “expert”. Each one of these classes has drawn participants who have had all levels of experience. This has made for some great questions and projects that have been both fun and challenging.

The first day will consist of a classroom session where we will discuss subjects including:

NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) guidelines including NFPA 54 and 58 the LP gas codes.
NFPA 160 Flame Effects Before a Live Audience and other codes.

We will also examine the physical properties of LP gasses and get some hands on time with fittings and parts.  Of course, we closely examine the wonders of LP gas with the amazing clear propane cylinder.  We will then finish off by taking a look at some typical designs for Flame Effects including accumulators, free burning effects, fuel mortars, pilot lights, hot surface igniters and much more. We will have plenty of demonstrations and hands on materials including the ever-popular clear propane tank.

After the first days class the great folks from the Ka Pilina Interactive Arts Society will host us for a great beachside BB-Q, moonlight fire and meet and greet. Fire artists telling tales of fires past around a campfire on a beach in Hawaii? Wow that sounds awesome!

The second day will be a shop day where we will put what we have learned into action and create a one of a kind flame effect from the materials on hand. The best part of the class is the assembly of the effect so please let us know if you have materials or elements you may like to see incorporated. This class will be fun for the artist who is thinking of incorporating a small flame element into their work, as well as the more experienced fire artist wanting to take their work to the next level.

Leading this weekend will be Dave X, Fire Safety Manager for Burning Man for more than 10 years, and Eric Smith, Chief Inspector for the State of Nevada Board for the Regulation of LP Gas. We will also have displays of fire art from several local fire artists!

The cost of this 2-Day class will be $150.

Both days’ classes will be from 10am – 5pm.

Printed materials and a yummy lunch of whatever cheap local food we can get will be provided each day.

Come and join us in the islands for this weekend and hang out with other fire artists in this place born of fire …

Email your name to [email protected] to reserve your spot.”
