Burning Man sure is fun! Getting ill, injured or killed, well … not so fun. And here’s the thing to keep in mind about the Black Rock Desert: it’s one of the most strikingly beautiful and utterly ethereal locations in the world that will ever try to kill you.

OK, maybe we’re getting a little dramatic. But not really … BECAUSE IT’S TRUE. So listen up, folks.

In the spirit of Radical Self-Reliance, Burning Man provides the essential safety infrastructure to take care of our citizens, but ultimately the responsibility for your personal health and safety falls to YOU.

In this JRS, we’ve got everything you need to know about taking care of yourself and what services are available, should the need arise. Plus some other interesting, important (and even esoteric!) safety information.

Thanks to Emergency Services Department overlord Joseph Pred (he hates when we do this) for pulling together this invaluable edition of the JRS.

The Man burns in 24 days! Whoaaaaaa.

HEALTH PERMITS ARE REQUIRED

The Nevada State Health Division (NSHD) requires camps preparing food to apply for a permit and allow an on playa kitchen inspection. You must apply for, and be permitted as, a Temporary Food Establishment by the NSHD if:

* You wish to share, cook or serve food or non-alcoholic beverages to the general Burning Man population (gifting food).

* You will be cooking or serving food to groups of more than 125 FELLOW CAMPERS of your theme camp on a consistent basis.

Check out the blog post for more details:

WE’RE IN BED WITH B.E.D.

The Bureau of Erotic Discourse (B.E.D.) was formed back in 2005 as a grassroots community group to raise awareness and educate participants about sexual assault, safety and sex positive communication on playa. Since then this committed group of participants have nurtured B.E.D. into a multifaceted effort that promotes positive change in the Burning Man community using posters, workshops, outreach and dialog on consent, sex and sexual assault prevention. We strongly encourage all theme camps to participate in their Theme Camp Challenge:

http://www.bureauoferoticdiscourse.org/ThemeCampChallenge.php

In order to increase B.E.D.’s outreach to the community, Burning Man’s Emergency Services Department (ESD) Mental Health Branch, which handles sexual assault and domestic violence cases on playa in conjunction with Law Enforcement, has created a collaborative partnership with B.E.D. This partnership gives vital support to B.E.D. that will allow them to focus on educating the community.

A special shout out to GiGi, Littlewing, Ludo, Dr. Placebo and Mary for being the true champions of this successful effort in our community!

Learn more about B.E.D. online at http://bureauoferoticdiscourse.org/

ART WITH FRICKIN’ LASERS

Lasers are by no means toys. They can cause blindness, fires and other problems if set up improperly or if the incorrect equipment is used. Remember to install and use lasers in such a way that they avoid eye level as the beam can temporarily or permanently blind people.

***New for 2013: All laser projects on playa that use Class 3B or Class 4 lasers need to be operated by a laser professional that has the appropriate training, insurance and experience to safely manage the laser installation. Since most laser projects on playa use lesser classes of laser this won’t affect many projects. Thankfully, all the projects who reported having high powered lasers already met this new guideline as part of their design and we appreciate those who were proactive in safely managing their lasers. If you’re not sure about laser classes, check out:

http://www.lasermet.com/resources/classification_overview.php

If you are going to have a laser set up on playa and no one in your camp is a laser professional consider these tips:

* Use the lowest class laser and use it at the lowest power setting to reasonably accomplish your desired effect.
* Treat laser operations as a serious safety matter.
* Ensure all operators are sober.
* Designate someone to monitor the laser to make sure your lasers are being operated safely.
* If your laser operates automatically or without an operator, have someone monitor the system so they can shut it down if necessary.

**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**

WEATHER OR NOT IT RAINS

Rain storms, while much less common than dust storms, do happen. Here are some wet weather tips to remember:

* Listen to BMIR 94.5 FM for updates and information.
* Cover and secure anything electrical.
* Like with dust storms, check your structures and the art in your camp to be sure it will be safe in the wind and rain.
* Don’t drive on wet playa, your vehicle is likely to get stuck.

SENDING AND RECEIVING EMERGENCY MESSAGES: FAQ

Q: Where should I go to check for emergency messages that might be waiting for me?

A: The only place on-playa that serves as a central distribution point for emergency messages is Playa Info in Center Camp.

Q: What if friends or family at home need to reach me for an emergency?

A: Given the nature of the event, finding a participant on the playa can be quite challenging. Cell phones really don’t work, most of you don’t carry satellite phones and there is limited Internet access. Add to that the fact that addresses on the playa are inexact even if you *do* know where you’re camping ahead of time, and finding a person’s camp can become very difficult.

Q: How can friends or family send me a message?

A: Emergency messages should be sent via the emergency contact web form found here: http://911.burningman.com/?pg=contact . Messages may be passed to the Black Rock Rangers who, if they have the extra resources, will attempt to deliver it. We will also make the message available at Playa Info in Center Camp, so if you’re awaiting bad news or anticipating emergency messages, check in there each day.

Q: What details should be included in an emergency message?

A: The emergency contact web form will prompt users for details to help find you. Important details include first and last name as well as any known nickname that you might go by around camp. It should also include the name of your theme camp or other affiliation (volunteer team, etc.), and its location if known, along with your vehicle make/license plate and any other unique features that will help with the search (such as, “camp has a 20 foot inflatable alien,” etc.).

Q: What can prevent me from getting the message?

A: Just a few of the variables that can get in the way: your camp relocates; nobody’s ever in camp when we come to find you; your camp spot is obscured from view by other camps; the 20 foot inflatable alien deflates due to a leak; there are three camps with 20-foot inflatable aliens, and none of the neighbors know anyone named “Damon” because you have been introducing yourself all week as “Doctor Damaged.” You get the idea.

In other words, you’re heading to the middle of the desert and there is no guarantee that we’ll be able to deliver a message in an emergency; it’s important to weigh that before you leave home. If you are awaiting news you can actively check in at Playa Info, and in truly dire circumstances you can take the bus into Gerlach to use a pay phone, cellular phone or take advantage of the free wifi coverage there.

**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**

GET SHOWERED WITH… WHAT?!? EWWWW, GROSS.

It’s nice to shower others with affection, but the non-potable water (that means it’s not safe for drinking) in the road watering trucks isn’t a safe alternative to a shower. It may contain all sorts of icky things that can make you sick. Resist the temptation to run after the trucks as they pass by! People have also slipped in the mud and seriously hurt themselves. Just bring a solar camping shower instead.

While we’re talking about bathing, keep in mind that public showers, baths, and pools are PROHIBITED in Black Rock City since there is no legal way to make them safe or for the authorities to approve them. Showers that are set up for you and your campmates are fine, just as long as they’re not open to the public.

**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**

YOU’RE SICK OR HURT AT BURNING MAN, NOW WHAT?

Q: What should I do if I get hurt or sick on the playa?

A: We hope, of course, that you won’t get sick or hurt…but being radically self-reliant also means remembering to bring a first aid kit (http://bit.ly/Afd8M)and treating yourself or your campmates for minor injuries. Should your illness or injury be more severe than you can manage without help, there are Emergency Services Department (ESD) medical stations near the 3:00 and 9:00 plazas and the Rampart clinic at 5:10 and Esplanade. Look for the red cross on top of the stations at 3:00 and 9:00.

Q: What if they can’t manage my problem?

A: If the on-site medical providers feel that you have a medical emergency that requires a higher level of care than can be provided on the playa, you may need to visit a hospital in Reno. Depending on the seriousness of your condition, that can be accomplished by either getting a ride from a friend or being transported by an ambulance or helicopter. Remember to bring your ID, insurance card, cell phone and wallet when you go. Also note that if you get transported by ambulance or helicopter you’ll need to arrange for a friend to pick you up after your hospital visit. There are no shuttles from the hospitals back to the playa. However, if you’re stranded, Humboldt General Hospital (HGH) EMS will assist you the next time they come to Reno. HGH is in touch with hospitals to coordinate that effort. Seriously though, your friends should pick you up so you can buy ice cream and snacks for your camp. While HGH will help you out if you’re stranded, they certainly will not stop for you to go shopping.

Q: Is there a clinic in Gerlach?

A: THE CLINIC THAT USED TO BE IN GERLACH IS NOW CLOSED. Your closest point of care for those coming or going East (depending on which route you take) is Pershing General Hospital in Lovelock, Nevada http://pershinghospital.org/. Westbound your choices are more plentiful with several hospitals in Reno.

Q: Where can I get a prescription filled?

A: It’s best to bring adequate medications for your needs. Should you need to get a prescription refilled the closest pharmacies are in Fernley or Reno.

**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**

DID YOU KNOW IT COSTS $25,000 IF YOU GET TRANSPORTED OFF PLAYA VIA HELICOPTER?!?

The most expensive ride on the playa is the one you never want to take: an emergency medical helicopter transport to one of the Reno hospitals. Even if you have insurance it still might leave you with a bill for several thousand dollars since most insurance doesn’t cover 100% of the cost. Of course it is considerably worse if you have no insurance at all!

Every year, it seems, we hear a story or two of a Burner who gets airlifted off playa only to practically need to be resuscitated again when they receive their bill months later. Given that only an unlucky few get airlifted each year, chances are good you’ll never need it, but if you have a complicated pre-existing condition or want to have some extra coverage “just in case,” it’s worth considering the Flight Plan Membership that Care Flight offers. Their program covers your entire family for $55/year and also applies to other air medical services in California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Wyoming. Non-Nevada residents are eligible for this program. See their website for all the details and fine print:

RANTING AND RAILING ABOUT STRUCTURAL SAFETY

Since *you* assume all liability for the safety of any structure you construct, here are some important questions you should ask yourself when designing and building a structure at Burning Man:

• Building a platform?
– What’s the load capacity?
– How many people can it hold based on the load capacity?
– How will you prevent it from becoming overcrowded?

• Railings are required to be strong enough to be leaned against; how will you accomplish that?

• Have you factored in the high winds conditions that are like on Black Rock Desert for your design?

If you have not fully considered all aspects of your plan from a structural engineering perspective, you have more research to do.

For more details see:

BLUE LIGHT SPECIAL AT THE MAN BURN: GET HELP WHEN YOU NEED IT

Burn night can be chaotic when everyone crowds around the Man. To take the guesswork out of finding help, ESD has created safety contact points outside the Burn circle. There is one on the 3 o’clock side of the Man and another on the 9 o’clock side of the Man. Both of them are along the promenade on the edge of the crowd. Each contact point is marked by a bright blue rotating emergency beacon and both tend to be easily visible from the edge of the crowd.

Each rally point has a host of resources dedicated to it in case there is a need, including Black Rock Rangers, Law Enforcement, ESD Medical, ESD Fire and HGH EMS. Just walk up and ask, and we’ll arrange for the right resource to follow you back to where help is needed.

**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**

CARRY YOUR ID ON PLAYA

While Black Rock City is a magical place, we still need to carry ID for several good reasons…

1. If you get hurt on playa and are transported while unconscious we can identify you.
2. In case you get arrested and have to prove your identity to law enforcement.
3. If you’re lucky enough to look under 21 and want a drink in any camp that serves alcohol.
4. If you are driving a motor vehicle of ANY KIND, you must always carry a valid Driver’s License.

**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**

YOU REMEMBERED A SPARE KEY, RIGHT?

Every year, Burners lock their keys in their car or lose them — big bummer, right? Doesn’t need to be. One simple step will save you tons of time, hassle and money:

MAKE AN EXTRA KEY and store it someplace secure. Hassle avoided!

Now what if you don’t have an extra key? Lockout services are available. Go to Playa Info, or if Playa Info is closed, go to Ranger HQ after-hours.

**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**

STRANDED AT A RENO HOSPITAL WITH NOTHING BUT A BACKLESS GOWN?

So you wake up in a hospital bed and a nurse is telling you that you’re going to get discharged soon. Unfortunately, the last thing you remember was being on playa. Of course, since it was the playa, you didn’t bring your wallet or purse with your money and cell phone. So how do you get back to the playa?

Your friends on the playa of course! In the vast majority of circumstances your friends already know you’re in the hospital and are on their way to pick you up. But what if you’re stranded? Luckily, our friends at Humboldt General Hospital (HGH) EMS will coordinate with Reno hospitals to get you back to Black Rock City when one of their ambulances return. While this resource may be available it’s important to note that HGH EMS is NOT a shuttle service. HGH EMS is generously offering this as a last resort to those who are truly stranded at the hospital. We very much appreciate their help for the few people each year who get stranded by offering this last resort means to get you back to Burning Man.

**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**

LOOKING FOR SOMEONE MISSING ON PLAYA?

The only place on playa that serves as a central collection point for emergency messages is Playa Info. The Rangers, ESD, HGH and Law Enforcement pass information to Playa Info so that it serves as the clearinghouse for all such messages, saving you the hassle of having to run around and check all the different places a person may be.

ADOPT-AN-INTERSECTION

We all know people like to steal the street signs from BRC on their way out of the event. This unhelpful habit causes havoc for the medical crews, fire trucks, Black Rock Rangers and others by making it difficult to find the location of those who need help in an emergency.

We implore everyone to leave the street signs where they are on your way out of the city. Obviously most people are not guilty of stealing street signs, but there will always be those that persist… so we are asking some of you wonderful and awesome Burners to help by adopting an intersection.

A simple way to help everyone…

The idea was inspired some years ago when participants spontaneously improvised street signs to make it possible to navigate the city in absence of the originals. If you see a signpost missing its sign, use some cardboard, a marker, and some duct tape to make a legible replacement. It will not only help your friends find your camp, it will help all of the emergency responders and will be of great help to your fellow citizens of Black Rock City. It’s a small thing that makes a big difference. We thank you in advance for your help!

FREQUENCY COORDINATION: ARE YOU USING TWO-WAY RADIOS ON THE PLAYA?

Are you planning on using a two-way radio (greater than 5 watts) for any reason on the playa? The Emergency Services Department coordinates spectrum and systems to avoid interference between various projects on playa and the Burning Man radio infrastructure.

Please note that in general ESD does not coordinate AM or FM broadcast radio, WiFi, HAM, FRS (aka Talkabouts), GMRS, CB, or RC bands. However if you are planning a high power radio application in any of these bands please let us know so we can isolate your signal in case of interference.

Please contact ESD Communications at http://911.burningman.com/?pg=contact if you have questions or to register your frequency request.

**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**

“911” SERVICE IN BLACK ROCK CITY, NOW WITH ART SUPPORT!

By now most know that there is very limited cell phone service in the area surrounding Gerlach. If you’re lucky enough to have a signal in Black Rock City please do not call 911 for problems within the event site. The dispatch center you would eventually reach doesn’t manage the available resources on playa. It’s far faster to flag down a Ranger or send someone to fetch help at a Ranger Outpost or ESD Station. That said, there is a way to directly call for help since ESD’s on-site emergency dispatch monitors a designated emergency channel on the license-free MURS (Multi User Radio Service) radio band.

MURS is a service similar to FRS (Family Radio Service, the frequencies that Motorola Talkabouts and similar inexpensive radios use). FRS channels are extremely overcrowded and they’re used by thousands of participants during the event. FRS radios are also not powerful enough to effectively communicate throughout Black Rock City. MURS, in contrast, is currently not in common usage and operates at a higher power output so it can communicate across the entire playa.

We appreciate that participants respect that this “911” channel on MURS will be used for emergencies only.

***New for 2013 is that Art projects will be able to use their MURS radio to call Art Support Services directly, saving them the hassle of having to go all the way to the ARTery in person to follow up on issues.

You will need to purchase your own MURS radio to contact ESD 911 or Art Support Services, but the other three MURS channels can also be used just like FRS radios for other purposes. Large camps or villages might also choose to make one part of their group planning efforts and store it in a public place for emergency use.

Reasons to choose MURS:

* If you’re part of a large theme camp it’s a good investment to have a MURS radio around to call ESD emergency dispatch for your group, especially if you have members who have known health issues or the risk of injury is of special concern.

* Large art projects working out on the open playa will be able to get help faster.

* Camps that are on the outer-rings of the city are far from a Emergency Services station don’t have to send runners for help when an emergency arises.

* The other 3 open channels on MURS can be a great alternative to the overcrowded FRS channels, especially if your camp has a Mutant Vehicle or event-wide project they want to coordinate.

* It’s the only way for the public to contact Black Rock City’s emergency dispatch.

To call Art Support Services on a MURS radio: Set your MURS radio to channel 4 (154.570 MHz, CTCSS/PL 97.4).

To call 911 on a MURS radio: Set your MURS radio to channel 5 (154.600 MHz, CTCSS/PL 97.4) to reach the Black Rock City Emergency Services Dispatch.

PLEASE NOTE: Each brand has its own labeling system so please refer to your user manual to see how CTCSS/PL 97.4 is labeled. Using any other “privacy codes” on channel 5 will interfere with 911. Instead limit your personal use to channels 1-3.

PROTIP: Program your radio at home where you can look up more info on how to do so on the internet.

FOR ALL MURS USERS: We ask that all Burning Man participants respect that channel 4 & 5 will be used for official use only. While the other MURS channels are fine for personal use we want to stress that channel 5 on MURS please be kept open for emergencies and not used for any other purpose.

An example of a few MURS radio models:

Dakota Alert MURS portable (works similar to common FRS radios, with selectable channel and code on the display) http://bit.ly/bmgDqI
Motorola MURS portable http://bit.ly/16tBhaJ (this vendor will program the radio for you upon request)

We recommend you search online for the best price for whatever model radio you choose to buy.

Or if you don’t want to buy a radio for this purpose you can contact your local two way radio rental service in your area and inquire about renting a VHF radio for this purpose (and they would program it for you as part of the rental, making configuring the radio hassle free if you’re not tech savvy).

BLACK ROCK RANGERS

In addition to the Emergency Services Department, the Black Rock Rangers play an important role in our community safety.

The Black Rock Rangers are a volunteer organization dedicated to the safety of the citizens of Black Rock City and its environs. The Rangers are a broad cross-section of the Burning Man community who volunteer some of their time as non-confrontational community mediators. They are empowered by the community and the Burning Man board to address safety concerns, mediate disputes and resolve conflicts when they cannot be resolved by the persons involved.

Rangers are available to any Black Rock citizen who needs their help and can be found patrolling the city, in the area around the base of the Man, at Ranger HQ near Center Camp, and at the Ranger Outposts located in the 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock plazas, directly across from the ESD stations. Rangers can be identified by their khaki-colored costumes with a Black Rock Ranger logo on the back.

Rangers rely on the Burning Man community to help them do their jobs; there’s a lot more participants than there are Rangers and you, too, are the eyes and ears of safety in Black Rock City. Here’s a few FAQs on accessing the Rangers as a resource (and ways that you can help):

Q: What should you do if you lose your child in Black Rock City?

A: Parents who have become separated from their child should find a Ranger (either at a Ranger Outpost, Ranger HQ, or a pair patrolling the city), who will report the child as missing. That information then goes out to all the Rangers patrolling Black Rock City.

Q: What should you do if you find a child who can’t find their parents?

A: Ask the child to come with you and a friend to a Ranger Outpost or Ranger HQ, and once you get there, the Rangers will relay the information about the child and the parents to all the Rangers patrolling Black Rock City (and probably offer to give you a big hug for helping out!).

Q: What if I’m having a dispute with a neighbor or a campmate that I can’t resolve?

A: The Rangers are happy to listen to everyone involved in a difficult situation and will work to help you come to a solution that you can live with for a week in the desert. A solution doesn’t always mean everyone involved is going to get exactly what they wanted when they started looking for a solution, but Rangers will work to help prevent a conflict to prevent it from escalating and find a workable solution.

**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**

THE FAMILY UNIFICATION NETWORK

Kids want to have FUN! The Family Unification Network that is. In instances of a lost child or separation, FUN helps to reunite children with parents faster.

Here’s how it works: parents and children register together at Ranger Headquarters in Center Camp. After providing simple identifying information, children will receive a unique wristband with a serial number, which will identify the child, parent or guardian, and camp location. And that’s it! Simple!

Should your child become separated from you, he or she just needs to find a Ranger. The wristband will facilitate a speedy reunion.

Registration is open daily at Ranger Headquarters before noon and after 2pm.

****Staff and volunteers with families are strongly encouraged to register their children in support of this program.****

Next Ranger Training June 9th !!

Please sign up if you want to reserve a spot. Send an email to [email protected]

With Burn in the Forest around the corner our second Ranger training is on the horizon. This is an excellent and very important way to contribute. If you’ve ever thought of being involved as a Ranger, then come out to the training on Saturday April 27th and join the team!Venue TBA
Time 12 noon – 5pm

We will cover conflict resolution, active listening, communication, rangering, and peer support.

Wrangler did a great job of explaining what we do:“As a Ranger, you will take responsibility to ensure people are having a good time. Just walk around and check out the action. Our gift is to mediate conflict using non-violent communication. We are an ambassador for the event and a source of information. We are the first responders and need to maintain communications within the event.”

As our events get larger and longer we need to build up our team. For a three day event, we need at least 24-30 Rangers, for a four day event, we would need over 40 people. That’s a lot of volunteers, and without your help we just won’t have the numbers needed to make sure everyone is safe and having a good time. So you can see how important it is to get as many people trained as possible.

We are combining peer support into our Ranger team so if you would like to be one of our peer support Rangers you will need to do the Ranger Training.

It is important to note that this is a Regional Training not an official Burning Man Training. This will allow you to Ranger at any of the Regional Events in and around BC.Even if you aren’t sure of your summer plans yet, come on out and get some training on what it is to be a Ranger. It is an afternoon full of great discussion and great company !

We need you to RSVP so we know numbers. Send an email to Andrew through [email protected]

Best wishes

Ranger Andrew

Hello folks,
Next month we embark on a little adventure to a spectacular location to finally Burn the Baboon Robot.
Last summer we made an attempt to renegade Burn on the edge of the city.
We came close, but not close enough.

So now we are heading to Carpenter Lake, to the Gun Creek Campground, where a 2km square area of open space awaits our return.
It’s a stunning location with a well kept campground next to it.

Being remote, no one cares what we do.
While we are close to Goldbrige BC, and just over the Hurley Road from Pemberton, we are far enough away from everything that we shall bother none.

I am dragging a very large sculpture in a full size school bus.
We have room for 6 people who want to split gas and enjoy a nice camping trip for a week.

Once there, it’s your playground.
If you want to help get the Baboon Robot there, drop us a donation to help with gas.
If you want to bring something to set up and make noise/music with…

Do IT!
Drop me line if you have any questions.

Evolver Vancouver & Emily Carr Student Union present a public screening & discussion of the Bloom Series.

THE BLOOM is a new documentary webseries illuminating the emerging culture of Transformational Festivals, immersive participatory realities that are having profound life-changing effects on hundreds of thousands of lives.

Over the course of 4 episodes, THE BLOOM explores a dozen ingredients that create the alchemy of the Transformational Festival. Each episode illuminates three themes, explored through the potent moments, stories and interviews captured at 23 Transformational Festivals around the globe.

Episode 2: PRACTICING THE NEW WORLD

Co-Creation * Participation * Modeling

THE BLOOM’s second episode examines how Transformational Festivals have become opportunities for “Practicing The New World” through the paradigm shift of producing reality through CO-CREATION, utilizing an ethos of PARTICIPATION which results in immensely rich environments that take the festival beyond commercial entertainment and into the realm of meaningful community experience and ritual, and MODELING, the many ways that participants are taking their transformational experiences back into their communities and their everyday lives.

Greetings and welcome to the onset of May, that wonderful time of year when we once again turn on our vehicle’s air conditioning and are rewarded with a face full of playa dust! Sure is a great way to get blasted with memories … but hopefully you weren’t wearing a nice suit.

This last weekend, the DPW had its first managers meeting of the year. A grand total of 32 DPW managers met up at the Burning Man Ranch out in the Black Rock Desert to conspire to build yet another Black Rock City in which the magic will happen. Somewhere in there, the realization hit ’em — Burning Man is appearing on the horizon.

Speaking of which, today’s the last day to pre-register your theme camp for placement (it’s all first-come first-served after this), and the deadline for submitting your registration is 12 noon PST. But we’re gathering you’re on top of this already, right? Right.

We’ve got a nice smattering of offerings for you here today, including an invitation to submit a design (or more) to be considered for inclusion amongst our official stickers for 2013 … always a perennial favorite. And it’s a good indicator that Burning Man is indeed around the corner.

Can you feel it yet? Give it a minute … you will.

The Man burns in 123 days!

U.S. DISTRICT JUDGE DENIES PERSHING COUNTY ATTEMPT TO BLOCK BURNING MAN LAWSUIT

U.S. District Judge Robert C. Jones issued an order Friday denying Pershing County’s attempt to dismiss a lawsuit filed by Black Rock City, LLC challenging the County’s unconstitutional festival permitting process.

Burning Man organizers sued Pershing County in August 2012 after the County breached a series of agreements it had previously entered into with Black Rock City, LLC, and enacted an unconstitutional ordinance that singles out the Burning Man event.

BRUNO’S IS FOR SALE

If you’ve traveled through Gerlach on your way to Burning Man (which the great majority of you do), you’ve passed by Bruno’s Country Club, or gassed up at the gas station there. Well, Bruno is selling it all off. It could be YOURS if you wanna pony up. Here’s the news in the Reno Gazette-Journal:

BURNING MAN IN BUTANE-PROPANE NEWS

The April 2013 issue of Butane-Propane News (dubbed “The New York Times of the LPG industry”) has a great article by John Needham about flame effects artist Eric Smith, Burning Man Fire Art Safety Team (FAST) Manager DaveX, and this little shindig out in the desert called Burning Man. BRAF GRANTEE “FLOAT” PROJECT BUILDS COMMUNITY, TESTS AIR QUALITY IN BEIJING

The Black Rock Arts Foundation provided an art grant in 2012 to FLOAT, a participatory art/design project using air-quality-sensing kites in Beijing, China. FLOAT had two components; a workshop and a public installation. The workshops gathered local Beijing residents to make kites with an air-quality-sensing module, and the public installation was a group kite flight in parks throughout the city using these kites.

Check out this blog post and the great video documentary about the project:

STEPHEN COLBERT COMPARES CLINTON GLOBAL INITIATIVE TO BURNING MAN

We got a chuckle out of this. While interviewing Bill Clinton, Stephen Colbert asks:

“How would you compare something like the Clinton Global Initiative to other big groups that get together, like Davos or TED Talks or something like that – or Burning Man? What is the difference between this and those other gatherings?”

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: BURNING MAN 2013 STICKER DESIGN PROJECT- ENTER BY JUNE 3

This is the official call for designs for the 2013 Burning Man stickers! Your design could be the one passed out with the materials you receive as you pass through the Greeters Station upon entering Black Rock City. Other designs will become official sticker schwag passed out on-and-off the playa throughout the year. Help us remember our wonderful home in the desert even when we’re away throughout the year. So, don’t hesitate. Participate! Thank you and good luck!

• 2. 5″ x 5.75” with a 0.125” corner radius
• 3″ x 3″” square with a 0.062” corner radius
• 3” Diameter Circle

Design: Whichever type of sticker tickles your fancy (or maybe you’re very ticklish and want to enter several designs), remember there IS a theme, and we like stickers that attempt to use the theme. Read up on the Cargo Cult theme! http://burningman.com/art_of_burningman/bm13_theme.html

The design MUST incorporate both the name Burning Man and the year 2013.

Colors:
• If using 1-3 colors, set up the file to print as PMS
• If using 4 or more colors, set up the file to print as CMYK

BURNER BEEKEEPERS, DONATE YOUR HONEY!

Smallfry writes:

“My name’s Smallfry, and I could use your help on a project. I’m building a bumblebee mutant vehicle to bring to the playa this year by the name of Beezus Christ Super Car. Born in the land of Dust and Honey, Beezus comes before you bringing sweet salvation! He will be equipped with a honey bar at the back where we will be serving honey to weary travelers. We’d like to have flights featuring honey from Burners all around the world! If you’re a beekeeper or know someone who is, we’d love to have a jar of yours to share with everyone! Drop us a line at [email protected], and put ‘Beezus’ in the headline so we don’t miss it.

HUGS!

THE GUARDIAN OF DAWN

We’d like to direct your attention to a particularly cool (or hot, rather) project for this year’s Burn. If you were on playa in 2012, you may have noticed a lack of spots to hang out around a warm fire in the cold wee hours. Well, luckily, The Iron Monkeys (hailing from Seattle) noticed too. And they’ll be bringing another one of their amazing fire gardens for us to enjoy: The Guardian of Dawn. With your help, of course.

Bringing a generator can make your Burning Man experience a lot more luxurious … running a coffee maker, microwave, lights, sound system, heck — an ice machine! — all of these take electricity to run. Thing is, generators are usually LOUD and STINKY.

– Bring the quietest generator you can afford, and the smallest that will meet your actual needs. Larger generators are more difficult to transport, use more fuel and create more pollution.
– Don’t run your generator late at night or early in the morning.
– Place the generator as far from other camps as possible. Remember, as far from YOUR camp means closer to someone else’s.
– Cover your generator with a sound shield or baffle. Do NOT bury it to shield the noise. No matter how well it is filled afterwards, the hole leaves a tremendous gouge in the playa.
– Make sure people can’t trip over any power cords.

The ePlaya has a whole thread with ideas for baffling your generator:

Ticket Sales Delay…

Ok folks, guess what?

We’ve decided to make BitF 2013 feel as much like ‘home’ as possible, so we’ve decided to throw in a ticket sales glitch. 🙂 Seriously, though –

This year the payment service system is being transferred to a more robust system. It’s a more efficient system and you will have more ways to pay – including direct payment and credit card options. It’ll make your ticket buying experience just as smooth as silk…. BUT, the process is taking longer than expected to set up. So, you won’t be able to buy tickets until a little later in May – most likely this weekend (May 4).

Of course we’ll announce the exact date as soon as we know!

Low income applications can be made to registration using  http://burnintheforest.com/registration-contact/

Deadline May 31st.

:::EQUIPMENT CALL OUT:::

We do have a rental agreement we will forward you in order to book the equipment.

First Seattle Ranger Training May 11th

Interested in participating at Burning Man in a unique and interesting way?  Want to *REALLY* get to know Black Rock City? Ready to profoundly and intensely engage in the Burning Man community?

Easily identified by the logos on their khaki shirts and the laminates around their necks, the rangers are participants just like you, who act as non-confrontational community mediators, facilitators of public safety, providers of information, and navigators of the edge of chaos.

If you have been to Burning Man at least twice before, you are cordially invited to attend a Black Rock Ranger Training and check out one of the most double-super-throw-down cool, fun, and interesting groups on the playa. If  you’re excited about rangering, but don’t have the Burn experience, drop us a note and we’ll tell you about how to become a regional ranger.

The first Seattle ranger training is coming up on Saturday, May 11th at the Wedglake House: 9403 27th Ave NE from 10 AM-5 PM. If you can’t make it on the 11th, there will be another chance later in the summer, but  keep in mind that there will not be a Black Rock Ranger training at Critical NW this year.

IMPORTANT: Before coming to a training, you MUST have signed up,  filled out the volunteer questionnaire, read the manual and passed the post-quiz. We have an increasingly large amount of material to cover, and we need everyone to be familiar with it coming in.

IMPORTANT: Alphas and first year rangers need to be at the training at 10 AM. 2nd+ year vets need to be at the training by 1:30. This is new from last year. Vets are of course also welcome to show up earlier for the ARTs.

Phew! That’s a lot of info! To recap:

Questions?  Send ’em to [email protected].

See you at training, and see you out there in the dust!

Roslyn and the Seattle Ranger training team

Overheard at BMHQ this week: “It’s starting to feel a lot like Burning Man around here.” Ayup, sure is.

Theme camp fundraiser events are popping up on the calendar, art project Kickstarters are spreading like wildfire through the social network, and early preparations are underway for all sorts of dreams, fantasies, grand schemes and the hard logistics needed to make them happen.

Yep, it’s starting to feel a lot like Burning Man.

Speaking of which, the deadline for theme camp registration is fast approaching — April 30, to be exact. So if you’ve got plans to register for pre-placement, hop to it. And keep in mind that this year, a Burner Profile is required, so if you don’t already have one, allot yourself some additional time to make that happen beforehand.

In ticket news, the Low Income Ticket Program is no longer accepting applications for 2013, and the last of the tickets are in the process of being rewarded as we type. Details below.

Lastly, we wrapped up the 7th Annual Burning Man Global Leadership Conference last weekend, and our man Caveat has been reporting on it in the Burning Blog … definitely worth a read. http://blog.burningman.com/tag/glc/

The Man burns in 135 days!

RIP: PEPE OZAN, ARTIST & SCULPTOR

We are deeply saddened by the news of artist Pepe Ozan’s recent death. Pepe was a formidable and passionate artist, sculptor and visionary who contributed greatly to the Burning Man experience.

We encourage you to read this and learn about Pepe’s work, and if you knew him, to add your remembrances in the comments:

LOW INCOME TICKET PROGRAM CLOSES

This just in from the intrepid ticket team:

The Low Income Ticket Program is no longer accepting applications for 2013. If you submitted your application on or before April 12 rest assured we are still busily reviewing applications.

If you submitted your application more than six (6) weeks ago and haven’t heard anything back, please double check your spam folder to make sure your notification isn’t lingering there before contacting us. We’ll continue to send out notifications for the next few weeks.

**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**

RIDESHARE TO BURNING MAN

Looking to get to and from Black Rock City this year? Well, plenty of people are too! And of course, ridesharing is the smart, economical and environmentally-friendly way of making it happen. Whether you have a ride to offer or are in need of a ride, coordinate your carpool on our rideshare board.

http://rideshare.burningman.com

**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**

REGISTERING YOUR PROJECT? YOU’LL NEED A BURNER PROFILE

We wanted to give you the heads up that if you’re submitting a project registration form for a theme camp, art installation, Mutant Vehicle, or press/media project, you’ll need to create a Burner Profile first.

If you do not already have a Burner Profile, please allow extra time in your registration process to create one.

You can access Burner Profiles, forms and their submission deadlines at http://profiles.burningman.com/ .

**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**

NEVADA LEGISLATIVE LEADERS LOOK TO TAX BURNING MAN

The Nevada legislature is considering rewriting the Nevada entertainment tax law such that Burning Man would no longer be exempt from paying a 5% entertainment tax. Burning Man is exempt because it is considered an art festival and because it’s held outdoors.

SEARCHING FOR SUPPLIES, ART PARTS AND WHATNOT? TRY OUT TINKOMATIC

This is pretty rad. Thought you might find it useful. Bob writes:

“This is my yearly plug about a small web app I developed that can help people get their gears and art parts in place and in time, and without depleting the planet: TinkOMatic (www.tinkomatic.com) allows you to search multiple classifieds and auction sites at once, and save your searches until you find what you’re really looking for.

You can search craigslist, oodle, backpage, kijiji, and eBay all at once; and if you don’t find right away that elusive playa bike, parabolic antenna, or tent frame you need for your next project, you can just save your searches, and easily check whether anything new came up.

The app is completely free and has been featured on lifehacker, mashable, and techcrunch.

Peace,
-Bob a.k.a. Skinny D.”

BURNING MAN AND THE PRINCIPLED LIFE

Here’s a snippet from this nice blog post by David Immel:

“I want the world to be a better place. I want to be better at being better in the world. Burning Man gives me a practice ground, a supportive microcosm, a field of experimentation that I can then use in the ‘real world.’ I strive to be welcoming to strangers in the world. I strive to be welcoming to the potential for poetry and richness and awe and beauty that anyone I meet may create at any moment. I strive to carry wonder and spontaneity and artfulness and surprises to others. Burning Man makes the world alive and full and new and brave and well, a better place.”

IN SEARCH OF SACRED SPACES, IN THE HARVARD GAZETTE

BURNING MAN ULTRAMARATHON SHORT DOCUMENTARY

We usually have a poke and a giggle about the Burning Man Ultramarathon (because we can), but seriously though? Mad respect. This piece brings it home. John writes:

AROMATHERA POTTY PROJECT

“Burners have said that there’s no sense of smell on the Playa.
Yet visitors to the porta potties testify otherwise.

I am Tracey of Lamay Camp, Kidsville and in 2011 I ‘found my Gift’.

I had brought some essential oils and essential oil blends I created to the Playa to scent my tent for hypnotherapy experience sessions. Finding my visit to our local porta potties less than inspirational, I scented every third porta potty with a blend and put a sign up on the outside of the door indicating the blend and its all-botanical ingredients. When I returned a few hours later to check on the scented porta potties, I found line ups for them! Soon, the Aromathera Potties were the talk of Kidsville. One person even said that it was the highlight of his Burn! So I started to think: What if Aromathera Potties appeared all over Black Rock City? What if aromatherapy enthusiasts shared their gifts at their local porta potties throughout the Burn?

In 2012, The AromaThera Potty Project exploded to over a dozen porta potty sites and AromaThera Potty Super Heroes.

So here’s the deal with the Aromathera Potty Project:
1. Contact me so we can get on the same page and so that I can get an overview of the spread of the Project.

2. Select/collect/create a handful of blends or singles (I suggest 30ml of each) to scent your local porta potties with. Here are the ‘Anarres Emo Oils’ I used: http://www.anarreshealth.ca/catalog/3/essential_oils?page=3 I suggest every third or fourth porta potty to make the job manageable for you and to ensure that scent averse folks have a choice not to use an Aromathera Potty.

3. Create non moopy signs to post on the Aromatherapy Potties. Bring 2 per blend in case one goes missing. Be sure that the signs state boldly ‘Aromathera Potty Project’, name the blend in a fun but accurately evocative way (‘Furry Forest’ rather than ‘Fun Fur’ for an evergreen blend) and list all of the ingredients with the common and latin botanical names so that we don’t endanger anyone with allergies to specific botanicals. NO SYNTHETIC SCENTS OR PERFUMES, PLEASE AS THESE ARE ALLERGENIC AND NOT NATURAL AND NOT AROMATHERAPEUTIC ETC.

4. Once on the playa, implement your Aromathera Potty Project at your local porta potties! Visit every 4 hours or so, tidy your porta potty and flick drops of essential oil goodness on the walls. It only takes a few minutes and you’re done!

5. Marvel at the line ups at ‘your’ scented Aromathera Potties! Bask in praise, directed and overheard! Rejoice in the gift you are bringing to the Playa Experience!

You can see some blends created for 2012 here:
http://www.anarreshealth.ca/node/274
I’ve already created a Truth Serum… I’m excited. That’s how I roll.”

THE VIRGIN LETTER PROJECT IS BACK!

“The Virgin Letters Project is back and looking for your letters. Once again, we want you to write a letter or ten to the virgin Burner you were. These letters will be gathered via website and any regional burns we can get a drop box to. We are also looking for people to host drop boxes at regional burns.

THE SAINTED PALATE AWAITS

“SANTOPALATO, Black Rock City’s most mysterious fine dining experience, hidden deep within the French Quarter, is seeking curious campers and helpers who love to cook, concoct, wine and dine. Builders, designers, artists and all others welcome! We have some wonderful tricks up our sleeves this year, and need a passionate team to make them a reality. Also, if you love to perform…dance, sing, act, play etc, we want to hear from you whether or not you’d like to camp with us, for without you the experience will not be complete.

SUPPORT THE TEMPLE OF WHOLLYNESS FOR BURNING MAN 2013

“The Temple of Whollyness will offer the space to reflect upon how to become more whole with our world. Its epic central pyramid – 64’ tall with an 87’x 87’ base – is designed with sacred mathematical proportions and constructed using our innovative building techniques. This majestic sanctuary will be crafted completely out of geometric interlocking wood pieces that fit together without the use of nails, glue or metal fasteners. Gregg Fleishman’s life’s work, genius assembly, love of geometry, in combination with his architecture and design background will be gifted to the Temple – the largest temporary interlocking wood structure ever!”

HELP BLACK ROCK SOLAR CHANGE LIVES FOR NEVADA’S HUNGRY & HOMELESS

The good folks at Black Rock Solar (www.blackrocksolar.org) write:

“Want to see a magic trick? If Black Rock Solar can raise $12,000, they’ll turn it into a $112,000 solar array for FISH, a Carson City charity — and FISH will turn that into thousands of meals, scores of warm coats and hundreds of medical treatments for the hungry and homeless! Please chip in so this incredible charity can start collecting free solar power, saving money on its electric bill and using those funds to help the needy in Nevada’s state capitol. Let’s show some Burning Man love to our Nevada neighbors, even the ones who can’t join us in BRC. Need more incentive? Black Rock Solar is offering some exclusive rewards … get yours while they last! http://greenourplanet.org/blackrocksolar ”

Ian MacKenzie writes:

“As a gift to the Burning Man community, I’ve collected my best advice for creators to harness the power of crowdfunding. After all, it’s a perfect fit: much like Burning Man, the true currency being exchanged isn’t money, but relationship (also know as shared indebtedness).

This project is a collaboration of the Boys and Girls Clubs, Recology, the Black Rock Arts Foundation, The Crucible, the Exploratorium, Maker Faire, and the Burning Man Project.

FIGMENT PRESENTS ALPHA – DARLINGTON, MD – APRIL 26-28

“FIGMENT [http://figmentproject.org] is excited to announce ALPHA [http://alpa.figmentproject.org], a completely new event, in addition to its free participatory arts events in cities across the USA and beyond. ALPHA is a weekend camp designed to provide support of all kinds for creators working in any medium or discipline, as long as their work is interactive or participatory. At ALPHA, creators collaborate to elevate their art, knowledge and skills as they share their work in progress, ideas and even their financial resources.

FIGMENT welcomes any and all artists who are in the process of creating work — for FIGMENT events, any other arts events, or individual installations or performances. Creators of all kinds are welcome at ALPHA… from sculptors, social scientists and playwrights to performers, musicians and philosophers. The only requirement is that they contribute to the content of ALPHA, by either bringing an art project that they are working on, or by hosting a workshop or meet-up to share their skills, knowledge, and experience.

Artists can register as many projects/performances/workshops/idea-swap sessions etc. as they would like after they buy a ticket. With ALPHA, FIGMENT intends to bring a large group of creators together, provide a basic structure for them to interact, share ideas and collaborate, and watch as amazing things happen.

What: ALPHA — http://alpha.figmentproject.org

ASK BEFORE YOU SHOOT

Did you just walk up on the PERFECT scene, and you’re dying to capture this MAGICAL MOMENT? Before you pull out your camera and take the shot, do the polite and respectful thing: ask first.

Everybody has different sensitivities about their privacy, especially at Burning Man, when we’re all flying our various freak flags. It’s good form to ask your would-be subject for permission to take their picture BEFORE you shoot.

Recharge Update

ReCharge was a great success. We had 14 projects that all received some money from the event!  We had an auction with some really cool stuff that people purchased and returned that money to the artists.  We want to give e BIG thank you to those that gifted to the auction, to all the volunteers and to Kim Gallagher and Deb Beaudreau for producing the event. The BOD are just tallying up all the money from the event and the online donations to get the final amounts to all the artists. We thank you for your patience in this, as we know you are keen to start building.  We look forward to all the fantastic projects coming to BitF.

Ranger Training, Saturday April 27

Hello, Vancouver Burning Man community!

With Burn in the Forest around the corner our second Ranger training is on the horizon. This is an excellent and very important way to contribute.

If you’ve ever thought of being involved as a Ranger, then come out to the training on Saturday April 27th and join the team!

Venue: China Creek Co-op – 1230 E 8th Ave, Vancouver

Time: 12 noon – 5pm

We will cover conflict resolution, active listening, communication, rangering, and peer support.

Wrangler did a great job of explaining what we do:

“As a Ranger, you will take responsibility to ensure people are having a good time.

This will allow you to Ranger at any of the Regional Events in and around BC.

Even if you aren’t sure of your summer plans yet, come on out and get some training on what it is to be a Ranger.  It is an afternoon full of great discussion and great company !

We need you to RSVP so we know numbers. Send an email to Andrew through rangers at andrewmartens.com

Best wishes

Ranger Andrew

Whoa. This JRS is PACKED with amazing art news. The only way we could possibly inundate you with more amazing art news would be to drop an entire art gallery onto your house from a helicopter. Which, come to think of it, would be pretty cool, but let’s talk about that later, because …

We’re announcing the 2013 Burning Man honorarium art installations, who’s going to be doing projects for the 2013 Circle of Regional Effigies (CORE), the amazing Temple of Whollyness, opportunities to show off YOUR art in the Center Camp Cafe, opportunities to work on big cool art projects, and (off playa) the 2013 Black Rock Arts Foundation grant recipients!

Yes, we used an exclamation point … it was warranted. Like, it’s seriously out of hand with art here. But we like it like that. We hope you do too. So let’s get to it!

The Man burns in 162 days!

BURNING MAN IS A STORY FIELD

“What makes it Burning Man isn’t the objects, their positions, or our positions in relation to them. It’s the fields of meaning we create between them. Let’s call them stories. The people and objects shift around, disappear, and reappear, but the stories stay.”

The folks who created Breaking Wave write:

“Follow a group of artists from Vancouver Canada, as they build and burn a wave sculpture made entirely out of reclaimed beach debris.

The Breaking Wave documentary follows the build process for a sculpture in the Black Rock Desert, at last year’s Burning Man. Shot over 2 weeks in the harsh desert environment, the film follows the construction of the sculpture made completely out of wood gathered from beaches all the way down the Pacific Coast, from British Columbia to California. The effort was monumental, and the challenge of finally assembling the sculpture at Burning Man only to see it go up in flames. Watch the 4-part video here:

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: PUT YOUR ART IN THE CENTER CAMP CAFE!

Jonesy writes:

“Greetings Burning World!

How would you like to place your art in the biggest, most populated structure on the Playa? That’s right! You have the opportunity to show off your talent and ideas in Center Camp Cafe for Burning Man 2013!

Help us enhance this environment and engage your fellow Black Rock Citizens as they sit and mingle in this popular hot spot on the Playa. We are looking for art in all shapes and sizes! If you have a sculpture that would get lost in the great expanse of the open playa, but might be appreciated in a more intimate setting, please let us know! You can also take over one of our “alcove” spaces and create your own environment or vision of the “Cargo Cult” Theme. Sculpture or painting, large or small, please write to us and tell us what you would like to bring! Write to [email protected].

ALSO, now in its fifth year, the Cafe hosts a GIGANTIC two-dimensional wall art gallery to show paintings, photographs, and whatever you can hang on a board! If you are a painter or photographer and always felt lost in giant art world on the Playa, now is your opportunity to shine and be a part of our KIOSK project. The works must fit into a 48″ x 48″ space and extend no further than 8″ from the Kiosk surface. To see pictures of the Kiosk spaces, and other parts of the Cafe, see Flickr gallery here:

To be a part of this beautiful and exciting environment, please write to us at [email protected].

Thanks!
Jonesy Jones and the Cafe Art Team”

FLAME EFFECTS FOR THE ARTIST – DENVER, CO – MAY 4-5

The Front Range is ablaze this spring as the Flame Effects for the Artist wraps up its 2013 class schedule. The collective art space Fusion Factory will be our hosts for this workshop and we think it will be one of the best yet!

http://fusionfactory.org/

So you want to incorporate the element of fire into your work but you want to make it safely? You want to learn from those who have experience and are willing to show you what they know? Then this is the workshop for you!

The workshop will be teaching basic practices and principles for incorporating fuel based flame effects into your work. This class is great for the beginning fire artist and always has something new for the “expert”. Each one of these classes has drawn participants who have had all levels of experience. This has made for some great questions and projects that have been both fun and challenging.

The first day will consist of a classroom session where we will discuss subjects including:
– NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) guidelines including NFPA 54 and 58 the LP gas codes.
– NFPA 160 Flame Effects Before a Live Audience and other codes.

We will also examine the physical properties of LP gasses and get some hands on time with fittings and parts. Of course, we closely examine the wonders of LP gas with the amazing clear propane cylinder. We will then finish off by taking a look at some typical designs for Flame Effects including accumulators, free burning effects, fuel mortars, pilot lights, hot surface igniters and much more. We will have plenty of demonstrations and hands on materials.

The second day will be a shop day where we will put what we have learned into action and create a one of a kind flame effect from the materials on hand. The best part of the class is the assembly of the effect so please let us know if you have materials or elements you may like to see incorporated. This class will be fun for the artist who is thinking of incorporating a small flame element into their work, as well as the more experienced fire artist wanting to take their work to the next level.

Leading this weekend will be Dave X, Fire Safety Manager for Burning Man for more than 10 years, and Eric Smith, Chief Inspector for the State of Nevada Board for the Regulation of LP Gas. We will also have displays of fire art from several local fire artists!

The cost of this 2-Day class will be $150.
Both days’ classes will be from 10am – 5pm.
Printed materials and a crappy but filling lunch of whatever cheap food we can get will be provided each day.

Join us in the foothills of Colorado for this workshop that will allow you to set you work ablaze.

Email your name to [email protected] to reserve your spot.

PARTICIPATION? WHAT’S THAT?

What do we mean when we say, ‘Participation’ is a tenet of Burning Man?

We understand that to really have a rewarding experience, we have to get involved. This means to weave ourselves into the landscape of what is so great. Walking the esplanade at dusk, someone pulls you into their gorgeous bedouin tent, where ten other total strangers are sitting, waiting. A stage show begins, and people begin serving you a five-course meal prepared by a talented chef. By the end of dinner, you are deeply bonded with the once-strangers at your table. The sun has gone down, your belly is full, and your hosts wish you well on your evening’s journey. You emerge transformed.

It’s morning, it’s getting hot, and your neighbors are struggling to get their shade structure together. You could watch from your already-erected shade, sipping iced coffee, wonder if they’ll work it out or collapse from heat stroke by noon. OR, you could make up an extra batch of iced coffee, and grab your work gloves, go over to the neighbors, and offer your help. Now, THAT is a gift! Who knows who those people are? People forge the best of friendships under the most unexpected of circumstances (no pressure, though).

Now, what was so great about that? YOU can do the same thing! Which isn’t to say you have to feed strangers an elaborate meal (but it’s awesome when you do!). The thing that was so great about that experience was that People Did Something. There was no standing idly by, either wondering what was going on in that tent, or if your neighbors would figure out the assembly of their dome. There’s no US and THEM on playa. It’s all US. Get involved, offer help. This Jackrabbit is certain you’ll have a richer experience for it.

Here’s the verbiage of the Participation Principle:
Our community is committed to a radically participatory ethic. We believe that transformative change, whether in the individual or in society, can occur only through the medium of deeply personal participation. We achieve being through doing. Everyone is invited to work. Everyone is invited to play. We make the world real through actions that open the heart.

Evolver Vancouver presents Volume 1 of the Bloom Series.

Hello from Evolver Vancouver. We have a screening of the first episode of volume 1 of the Bloom Series: A Journey in Transformational Festivals happening this Friday March 22nd at Emily Carr (in their theatre). This will be of definite interest to the Burning Man community! Some of the series is filmed at Burning Man as well. Here’s further info:

Over the course of 4 episodes, THE BLOOM explores a dozen ingredients that create the alchemy of the Transformational Festival. Each episode illuminates three themes, explored through the potent moments, stories and interviews captured at 23 Transformational Festivals around the globe.

Episode 1: FUNDAMENTAL FREQUENCIES Inspiration * Connection * Healing

Our first episode considers the “Fundamental Frequencies” required to be a whole human, examining how Transformational Festivals create immersive environments of INSPIRATION, which become containers for peak experiences of CONNECTION, very often catalyzing powerful HEALING processes with lasting and positive life-changing effects for participants.

About an hour of video will be shown including episode 1,some featurettes and previews. Following that will be a Q & A and facilitated discussion. Joining us will be film producer and director Jeet-Kei Leung via Skype, and film crew member Syd Woodward of Grounded TV live in person.

Happening at Emily Carr University on Granville Island. Theatre is across from the main building up the stairs. Doors at 7pm. Free for Emily Carr Students. $5-10 sliding scale for General Public.

Re:New / Intention 14.25

On Saturday April 13th there’s going to be a one-day distillation of Intention – Re:New (aka. “Intention 14.25”)

We’ll have workshops from 2-6, share a meal from 6-8, and from 8 until early (2am) we’ll be dancing it up with ever-excellentIntention DJs Raghunath, Stargirl, SobeyOne, and Bombus (and possibly more).

Check out the poster, the Facebook page and the website – it’ll be amazing.  Please invite the world to the Facebook event, and/or send the poster to whoever you think might want to see it.

Related: this is a co-created event and we’re always happy if anyone from the community wants to join in.  If you’ve got a dose of good will, you can connect with awesome people and fun things to do.  Volunteering provides a chance to play alongside some pretty magical human beings.

In particular we’re looking for some help organizing / running the day, some help with the evening meal, and if anyone wants to learn more about how this sort of event happens, Promo can always use a hand.

All help is welcome help and this is built by the community.  All that’s required to be part of it is willingness, and we’ll help make it happen from there.

I’ll be happy to chat about what awesomeness you want to add to the event and how it’ll fit with all the other moving parts in Re:New / Intention 14.25.  Contact [email protected] if you want to have a conversation about it – I like that sort of thing.

Love you all, and see you there!

-Jonathan (the younger Bean)

Well folks, the Burnal Equinox is in our rear-view mirror, and we hope this gets you excited, because for the next 6 months, it’s all downhill from here! We’re all screaming headlong aiming at the playa!

So this somehow became the movie edition of the JRS, it seems. We’ve got a bunch of videos and movies for you to tune into. And who doesn’t like videos, right? First off, the latest documentary about Burning Man “Spark: A Burning Man Story” will premiere at SXSW this weekend, and we’ll be keeping you in the loop as we learn more about where and when it will be shown after that.

Next up, check out the “Photos, Videos and Audio” section for a couple ring-dingers you’re going to love. And we’re actually holding one back to spring on you in the next JRS, so you have something to look forward to (we didn’t want to go TOO overboard now, y’know?).

Now if you Just Can’t Wait for Burning Man to start, don’t fret! FIGMENT is coming up again this summer — now in MORE cities — and it’s a great way to experience Burning Man culture manifesting in the real world in a really beautiful way. Check it out, learn about what they’ve got going on, and get involved!

The Man burns in 176 days!

BURNERS WITHOUT BORDERS COMMUNITY GRANT PROGRAM 2013

Carmen Mauk of Burners Without Borders writes:

“BWB has launched its fifth annual grant program, and you are invited to participate! To date, BWB ‘s grant program has provided funding for over 60 projects that have made a positive impact by leveraging a relatively small amount of money against the mighty power of the community.

This year, we are offering grant awards from $100-$1,000 to help jump start creative civic projects in communities around the world.  It’s simple. Gather your community, find out what you care about, and let your imaginations run wild. The deadline for submissions is April 1, 2013.

Are you looking for some inspiration for a project in your community? Check out the 2012 grantees and learn about the application details here:

BURNERS WITHOUT BORDERS DEMOLISHES NEARLY 100 DESTROYED HOMES, SAVING HOMEOWNERS MILLIONS

“On Oct. 29, the largest Atlantic hurricane on record blasted the northeast. Within a week, Richard Scott of Burners Without Borders was there to provide assistance. “If you had a skill set that you could go and help people, save them tons of money, give them hope, how could I not do it? It’s only a few months out of my life,” Scott said.

HOW DOES BURNING MAN COMPARE TO KUMBH MELA?

Chip Conley is (amongst other things) a successful hotelier, world-traveler, festival aficionado and Burning Man Project board member. He’s just returned from a five-week tour of Asia, during which he attended five different festivals. Lucky for us, one of the festivals he attended — along with 80 million other people — was the centuries-old Kumbh Mela (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kumbh_Mela), the world’s largest gathering of religious pilgrims, which takes place every three years in India.

So how does Kumbh Mela compare to Burning Man? Well, seeing distinct commonalities in the experiences, Chip penned a fascinating post comparing the two in his Fest300 blog. And we? We are the beneficiaries of his perspective.

Read Chip’s blog post here:

While you’re there, be sure to poke around his other posts … they’re great.

THE “PROFILES IN DUST” TEAM NEEDS YOUR HELP

“This is Terry Pratt from the ‘Profiles In Dust’ Media Team.  We are looking for anyone that is interested in helping us edit one of the following CORE documentaries from 2012: Boston, Colorado, Dallas, East Bay, Great Lake, Houston, Humbolt, Idaho, Maine, MidWest, Montreal, New Mexico, New Orleans, New York, Orange County, Philly, Portland, Reno, Sacrementoe, Seattle, Toronto, UK, Utah, Vancouver, and Victoria.  If you are interested or know of anyone that is, please contact me personally here: [email protected].

Our team shot interviews and B Roll of all of the CORE projects this year and have become overwhelmed with the massive amount of footage.  We are seeking fellow Producers to help us shape each Regions CORE project into a 3-10 minute documentary.  We will help you the whole way.

We have 5 CORE Projects currently in the edit bay; Los Angeles, San Diego, South Africa, Lithuania, and Scandinavia.  One that is complete, thanks Washington DC! You can view that one, plus all of our documentaries from 2012 now on our new Vimeo Channel: https://vimeo.com/user15641841

I look forward to hearing from you,
Terry”

MULTI-CITY CALL FOR ARTISTS FOR FIGMENT 2013

FIGMENT is an amazing example of Burning Man culture taking off in the real world, and y’all should participate! They’re now calling for artists in a number of cities. Here’s what they’re about (cribbed from their website), followed by the callout:

“FIGMENT catalyzes and celebrates an abundance of creativity and passion, challenging artists and our communities to find new ways to create, share, think, and dream. FIGMENT’s annual participatory arts event began in New York City in 2007 and has expanded to include events in Boston, Detroit, and Jackson, Mississippi.

FIGMENT demonstrates what the arts can be: participatory, bursting with creativity and completely free, born from the desire to share imagination and invention between artists and the public.

FIGMENT is a grassroots effort, organized and run entirely by volunteers as a gift to our cities because we believe in the aspirations and mission of FIGMENT.”

Submissions are now open for FIGMENT 2013 events in Geelong, Australia (March 23-24), San Diego (April 7), Jackson, MS (May 18-19), NYC (June 8-9), and the summer-long exhibitions in NYC!

Project submissions are welcome in every medium imaginable — Your FIGMENT project can be anything… A game, an experiment, a request, a challenge, a guided meditation, a performance based on audience input, a sculpture that moves or responds, a heart-stopping technological innovation that changes the way we see the world … Anything that gets people working and playing and creating together.

I’M GONNA HAND OUT FLIERS ON PLAYA!

So you’ve got this great project or product you want to promote, and Burners seem like the PERFECT AUDIENCE for what you’re selling. So you want to get the word out, maybe hand out some fliers? Sure, you’re technically welcome to do that, but you may find yourself on the receiving end of some pretty virulent vitriol from your fellow participants (and we hear about it, believe us).

See, one of our core principles is Decommodification … which means, amongst other things, that Burners don’t want to be treated like a consumer to be sold to, especially on playa. Here’s the full description: “In order to preserve the spirit of gifting, our community seeks to create social environments that are unmediated by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or advertising. We stand ready to protect our culture from such exploitation. We resist the substitution of consumption for participatory experience.” Besides, fliers create more MOOP, and we really don’t need any more of that, either!

So right, you might want to reconsider that marketing pitch you’re about to make, and instead, opt to have a spontaneous and authentic interaction with that person in front of you.

While we’re at it, here are all the Ten Principles: http://www.burningman.com/whatisburningman/about_burningman/principles.html
